Based on a True Story (2023)
Awful
It really is a feat to turn something with such a strong cast into something so poor. Started relatively positively but when the real "plot" kicked in it descended downhill very quickly I always think a show that relies on dream sequences throughout speak volumes about the quality of the writing and reeks of a lack of ideas.
The other sub plots and the group of friends around the sister add absolutely nothing to the overall show.
Kaley Cuoco plays to type once again where her entire repertoire seems to be acting surprised and astonished constantly throughout the 8 episodes. This feels like an opportunity missed.
Deadloch (2023)
Poor in the extreme
If this is an example of Aussie humour then you can keep it thanks
The Darwin detective character is dreadful and lacks any redeeming features
The main actress in this Kate Box is wasted. Loved her in Glitch
Language is fruity and whilst I don't mind the odd curse the C- bomb was dropped far too frequently for me.
I've seen this described as a feminine comedy but most of the female characters lack any depth and are portrayed as simple and dim witted
All in all a missed opportunity here. There was scope for a genuine black comedy set in a rural rarely covered location but this ticks no boxes whatsoever
Leave alone!
The Holiday (2021)
Dreadful
It's hard to believe they're still making tripe like this in 2021.
If this is a holiday with friends I'll stay at home thanks. The characters are utterly unbelievable and caricature like. Shame that Jill Halfpenny descended to this. 4 episodes of her looking moody and avoiding confronting her husband. Give it a swerve.
Sex/Life (2021)
Dreadful
The only impressive thing about this is how they managed to spin it out for 8 episodes. Loads of gratuitous nudity and sex which adds very little.
This feels like a low rent 80s mini series. The acting is wooden and some of the plot lines just plain ridiculous.
Good luck if you give it a shot!
Shoplifters of the World (2021)
Nah
Let me start by saying I'm a huge Smiths fan. This movie however is dreadful.
Lazy script just shoe horning as many Smiths lyrics as possible. No subtlety. Characters unlikeable.
It's like a school play written by a 15 year old who once listened to Nowhere Fast.
Poor in the extreme.
Wild Target (2010)
Old School enjoyable British comedy
I really enjoyed this. Excellent lead performances. Had something of an old Ealing comedy feel to it. Must've slipped my radar on first release. Would definitely recommend.
The Professor and the Madman (2019)
Brilliant lead performances
Fantastic story brilliantly told. Sean Penn is outstanding and deserving of many awards.
La casa de papel (2017)
Overblown seasons 3 & 4
Can't help but agree with recent reviews in that seasons 3 and 4 are utterly forgettable. Whole episodes drift with very little happening. The plots just get more and more bizarre and at times certain episodes threaten to turn into a musical. This really should've stopped after season 2. The gang were rich beyond their wildest dreams so the gold heist makes no sense at all.
The Wrong Missy (2020)
Funny frothy throwaway comedy
I really enjoyed this. Yeh its predictable but the comedic performances are excellent and there are several laugh out moments which is becoming rarer in comedies these days. A good way to spend 1hr 30 mins watching something which doesn't take itself too seriously. Recommended.
White Lines (2020)
Disjointed is an understatement
This is a big let down. It feels like the writer doesn't know what it's supposed to be. A murder mystery? Dark Comedy? The Mancunian accents are awful. The orgy scenes are just gratuitous and add nothing. The story is supposedly set in the mid 90s but a lot of the music is from 89-91. Just lazily done all around.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
Funny, intelligent comedy
This has to be the most underrated show. I was late to the party but the comedic performances and writing are an absolute joy. Every character hits the mark and whilst some have some questionable personality traits I loved them all. Will be sorry to see this end. Tell your friends to tune in and watch. They'll thank you for it.
GLOW (2017)
Season 3 - Lost its way
I loved the first 2 seasons but season 3 is a disjointed affair. The season tries to focus more on the individual stories of the characters as opposed to the wrestling but falls short in my view. The relationships the 2 main characters enter into lack credibility. Against all this its still very well acted but the writers/producers need to decide where this is going and stick to it instead of this mish mash of half stories.
