A good story at its heart and with great cinematography but larded with John Ford's usual hokum, caricatures and excess. There are many finer Westerns out there.

A real surprise

This is a treat, a sleeper. The writer/director did his homework and obviously cares about McQueen but also stays honest. True to time period and dialogue is spot-on in that respect, and in how I understood McQueen to be. The actor is terrific -- not just an impersonation but an embodiment. Low budget but they made the most of it. Very much worth if you're a McQueen fan.

Awful

Everything the first season was not -- joyless, absurdly plotted, pointlessly depraved, and just generally miserable. It seems the trend now is to see how we can out-sicken ourselves in the pursuit of storyline entertainment. The irony here is that as new and creative levels of ugliness are achieved, bad clichés and stereotypes are recycled. Some ideas, stories and characters really should not be extended beyond their organic lifespan. This concept and program was a one-season pleasure and should have stayed that way.
