Losmen Melati (2023)
Good premise, not good enough execution
(for reference I watch the netflix cut, if even there's a difference than the theater cut)
Good things first, this movie looks stunning. Cinematography looks great, so great it took a minute to realize this is NOT horror-comedy ala disney. The style is out of place, doesn't evoke fear in the slightest. Add this style with the surprising gore, its confusing on wether or not it's evoking haunted mansion style of horror (aka for kids) or for adult audiences. I like the back & forth story line, but the pacing of the kills is off, one kill super quick, the other stretch out for way too long- it gets boring. So many information fed to us by the narration, like spoon feeding us with so many plot points, yet nothing is answered, some don't even get brought up again it's almost pointless. Why would you bring information up for the audience only for all of it to not be answered or have any conclusion whatsoever? If this was made to get people to watch the series, it failed. This is not an established universe, Losmen Melati doesn't yet have the name or the fame to pull an audience based on teasers, yes i consider this movie an overly long drawn out teasers. You need to make the audience crave for more by giving them a compelling story line and conclusions that evoke more mystery that the audience will crave the answer to, not plot points with no climax, no point, no conclusion that we must watch another mini series just to get some semblance of an idea of what we are watching the last 1.5 hour. This was shown as a stand-alone movie, not a pilot for a series, yet that's what it is, a glorified pilot filled with too many introduction of characters with no significance, and the fact that this was shown in actual cinemas? What was the expectation, for the audience to leave the theater to go and do their homework of watching another 10 episode to find out what happen in a movie they just watch?. Let's get to the acting, some good, some are not. Dialogue is choppy, some are clearly an overexposition, yet again that bit of extra information is useless when there is no conclusion. Nothing is answered, at all. Not even why they do what they do, not how the Losmen is established, what the curse is beside some vague statement of danger, nothing. If this is a way to tease a series, it's not working. Should've put this as a pilot. As a movie, this doesn't work in the slightest, and i will be putting blame on the distributors, because audience shouldn't have to find out if a movie marketed as movie playing in the cinemas, is in fact a stand-alone movie, or a glorified pilot that we need to sign up and pay more to get the whole point of the plot. The 3 stars is for the cinematography, set design, and narration by Alexandra Gottardo.
Malignant (2021)
Don't get the low rating
James wan did it again. This movie is refreshing. That original twist was well done. The supernatural aspects was lacking some explanation, and that what might disrupt the believability of the story for some, but for me it doesn't bother me that much because the entire premise was crazy anyway. If you're expecting another james wan good ol ghost story, this is not it. I can only describe this as an IT-esque antagonists. But this was so fun to watch . The scenes are compact, not many wasted minutes of nothingness. Fast paced, no time to be bored. Just give it a chance and enjoy.
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
Like the 1st one but way worse
Let me mention the good things first: cinematography is mind blowing, the acting, the sound effects. I love how we went as silent as they have to be. The first 10 minutes.
Now let's start with what went wrong:
The characters are completely unworthy to root for, the kids are a liability. The discovery of the feedback barely makes a difference. The ending was unsatisfying, and an exact copy of the 1st. The monster have no purpose, no plan, neither does the humans. Is the monster so strong they could wipe out humanity? But at the same time they kinda just throw humans around, even during the first attack i feel like a lotta human would've survived that. And then we'd see they can be stop by a metal bar. Then the characters split up, classic. There's feral people that does nothing, barely a threat and we don't get why they don't just join the island people. The safe haven isn't that safe, where's the national guard anyway?. Instead of using the feedback as a sound fortress or something useful, they just did what they did like the 1st one. And for some reason the safe haven people just broadcasts a cryptic song instead of actual info when they have a functioning mic. So many plot holes. Characters like the boy can go from a scaredy cat to a curious one, wondering around with his busted leg, when the script demands he got everyone in trouble for absolutely no good reason, again. I still don't understand why they left the farm in the first place, it doesn't seem as pressing as walking with a baby to nowhere. The mother is barely likeable. Just.... don't waste your time. Every characters made questionable avoidable decisions. Just watch the 1st one again instead of wasting your time with this one.
Thunder Force (2021)
Mindless fun, don't take it seriously.
I don't get the 1-3 stars reviews. What were you expecting? This is in no way trying to be an oscar contender. It's a mindless fun surprise that the family could enjoy. The humor a little dry, but it gets a good amount of chuckles & laughs when you watch it with an open mind. Don't take it too seriously, don't expect a mcu level super hero film. Just watch & enjoy. Overall an enjoyable film, the conflict is not really there but the casts killed it, they make this movie works.
The Princess Switch (2018)
An enjoyable cheesy Christmas movie
Don't think too hard, this movie isn't meant to be taken seriously. A very cheesy, predictable, yet still pretty fun to watch when binging Christmas romance movie. No real villain or real stressful conflict, perfect for the holiday
The Night Comes for Us (2018)
Bloody good action, not that good of a plot
This movie is packed with very intense, bloody, amazing fight scenes. There's trouble on every corner, blood on every scene. If you look for a great martial art + guns + matchete fights, this movie is for you. Unfortunately the plot is a little thin. As an indonesian having no language barrier, i am able to understand this movie fully, but i seriously couldn't sympathize with Ito less. I understand his motivation, his change of heart, that's not the problem here. the problem is that the way it was portrayed, the audience just don't have enough time to care for him and the little girl that much. My sympathy can only extend to me feeling maybe a little sad if the girl ends up being brutally murdered, but not necessarily enough for me to root for her survival throughout this film. After the 5th fighting scenes involving her being protected and others sacrificing their lives for her, i stop caring about her and pity her protectors instead. This became a problem as me not caring for the little girl enough led to me not caring about our main character's motives despite rooting for his survival. If only we were given an extra scene or two to really sympathize with her, this would've been perfect.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
Accidentally stumble upon this show, staying for good
I stumble upon this show on netflix not knowing what's this show is about, but I'm sure glad i did! The best comedy show right now that is funny, fresh, and progressive. Minorities will be able to see themselves as the funny one instead of being the butt of a joke like in most comedies. It doesn't take itself too seriously and even after 5 seasons, it keeps on entertaining viewers. The characters have great arcs and are interesting on their own or combined together. Absolutely brilliant. Also perhaps the only show with cold opens worth watching on their own. Spectacular
