Damsel (2024)
I had a good time watching it
This movie was so much better than I expected. The plot was simple and quite predictable, but the story was very well told and I enjoyed every second of it. And for the record, simple is not bad, simple and well told is great and what we usually need!
The special effects were ok in my opinion, the dragon was well made and looked quite scary.
And of course, Millie is great as a lead, the role fits her like a glove. She does an amazing job being a princess, a victim and eventually a fighter.
Marvel and DC, before you ever start blaming again the male audience for the poor reviews on your female centered movies, watch this movie and learn!
Dune: Part Two (2024)
More of this, please!
What a movie! One of the best I have ever seen! It was all I wanted and more. The visuals, the sound, the acting, the dialogue - they are all at their highest. Absolutely spectacular!
I strongly recommend seeing it in a cinema. The movie is great, but the cinema experience amplifies that grateness.
I know the source material was really good to start with, but the way the director captured the storyline, built the characters and delivered it all to the audience, is simply a masterpiece.
I think the pace of the movie was perfect. Slow at the times we wanted to savor the moments, fast enough through the rest, and constantly intense.
And even though we are introduced to quite a bunch of new characters, they are all given enough time for the audience to understand who they are and what is their role in the story.
More of this, please!
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
A mix of good and bad
I watched the cartoon series a few years ago and absolutely loved it. So much fun, so many nice moments filled with emotions, and so many good action scenes. When I heard Netflix will do a live action series, I could only hope that the writers will stay true to the original story and not mess things up, as they usually do on Netflix. And as expected, Netflix dissapoints again. Don't get me wrong, the show would probably be good for someone that does hasn't seen the original. But for a hard core fan, it's lacking many essential moments.
To begin on a positive note, here are the things that I liked about the show:
- Visual effects (fights and landscapes) were really well done
- More action than I expected (considering how expensive visual effects during fights must be)
- They captured the emotion of the original show really well in some scenes. My favorite was the reveal of Zuko's banishing reason to the crew.
- I liked that they did not focus that much on the silly jokes that happened in the original show. They delivered enough jokes to showcase the childish mindset of the main characters, but overall kept a more serious note which I think it's justified considering the tragic losses everyone has suffered.
Things that bothered me:
- Aang does zero waterbending, and the first book is called "Water". He was supposed to be very good at water bending when he got to the final battle. This is the absolute worst change they made in my opinion. Aangs parallel learning with Katara and them helping each other in the learning process was a major plot in the original series. How can you not bring this into the show?
- Not enough is explained about the comet. Like, that is one of the most important things in the entire show, it should have been explained from the first episode, and they failed that miserably.
- There is no explanation about the Avatar learning process, such as the elements are supposed to be learnt in a particular order, what happens if you die in the avatar state, etc.
- Some casting choices... Yue and Mai look like nothing they did in the animated series.
I am curious how they will approach the continuity issues they created in the second season, if there will be a second season.
@Netflix: you are not allowed to mess up this series. You hear me? Get your best writers on it and be faithful to the original materials. Or else, we (the hard core fans), will have no mercy on you.
The Marvels (2023)
Who hires these writers?
By far the worst Marvel movie so far, I am extremely disappointed. After the mess that Thor 4 was, I was hoping that Marvel learned its lesson, but it seems not. I am honestly happy this movie did bad at the box office, that's what you get for ruining such a great character (I loved Cpt. Marvel from the comics).
What makes it bad:
- Action moves way too fast from one scene to another
- No character improvement or growth by the end of the movie
- Things just happen with no storytelling
- Not serious enough, too childish for my taste
- Too many goofy moments (singing, really? We've come this low, Marvel?)
- End scenes that try to set the context for next movies seem forced and unnecessary
I also found two good things eventually:
- I liked the villain and her story, sympathized with her a bit
- At least the movie was not long.
These writers should never be hired again.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023)
So many bad things about this series
I need to say I was hyped about the series when I saw the trailer and the cast, but I am super dissapointed now after seeing it. But for the sake of being objective, I'll detail both the good and the bad.
Good:
- Flashbacks from the past. I think the action that took place in the past was a lot better and cooler. Less drama, more sense and actually interesting things about the start of Monarch.
Bad:
- No monsters. Like really, if you watch the trailer, that's 80% of the monster appearences.
- Annoying characters, especially the teen trinity. They tried to give them back stories and make them important, but I was just hoping they would get killed asap for most of the episodes.
- Suuuper long shots of nothing. Like, conversations that took too long and contributed with nothing to the plot.
- Too much focus on internal drama and overreaction. Every episode someone gets upset with someone else, the drama is way overreacted, and the getting back together is sudden and forced.
All in all, extremely poorly written. Avoid it.
Legion (2017)
Boring
Tried to watch it, I really did. Watched the first 3 episodes from the first season, then I just could not take it anymore and gave up. This has to be the most boring TV show I have ever watched. Nothing happens. I mean, stuff happens, but nothing meaningful. Characters are heartless. Dialogue is poorly written. Special effects are from the 80s. Save yourselves some time and skip it.
I've been reading other reviews and the people that find it good said that the first season is the best of them all. I can't imagine how bad the other two seasons are.
Wanted to give it 1 start, but eventually gave it two stars for Dan Stevens. He's a good actor and he really gave his best on this. But even his best is not enough to make this show good.
Dota: Dragon's Blood (2021)
Very bad writing
Season 1 started ok, the animation was poor, but even if the story was not great, it was at least good enough and even entertaining sometimes.
Season 2 had a more entangled story and was quite disappointing, especially because they teased some important characters through the season, only to get rid of them suddenly and without giving them much to do or room to grow. After watching season 2, I had the same feeling as after the last season of Game of Thrones. I just wanted to scream to the writers for that poor story telling and meaningless deaths.
Anyway, then comes season 3, which I only watched because I had nothing better to do. And oh man, that was a new level of disappointment. The story was incredibly hard to follow. On many occasions, it didn't make any sense. It seems it was written by someone who has never played a game of Dota in their life. Hours of my life wasted. Where is the radiant vs dire conflict? Where is the map? Where are the two sides that fight for their cause? WTF!!!
Other general thoughts:
1. A lot of focus is put on characters that don't even exist in the game, while the real game characters that we all love are given little screen time and poor story arcs.
2. There is a lot of forced cursing through the show. It doesn't even make sense, they just throw a "F" word here and there with no real meaning.
I hope these writers are fired and never get another job in their life. Dota is my favorite game all time, I've been playing it since 2006 and I hate to see it turned into such a mess. They ruined this show irreparably.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
So much fun!
I loved every minute of this movie! It had a bit of a slow start to build the context, but then, it got packed with non stop action, chases and suspense.
For me, the movie scored really high for the following points:
- Revisited the old characters and showed us what they are doing now, plus we got some nice touching scenes (maybe a bit of cliché here and there, but nothing exaggerated)
- Main focus was still on the new characters (from the Jurassic World series) and got them to merge nicely with the old ones, share screen time and exchange jokes
- Scared me and made me jump in my seat (happened at least 3 times)
- Provided me with more than a couple of crazy chases / dinosaur encounters that made me feel like I was part of the scenes, kept me in a nonstop tense mood while my brain is completely frozen by the spectacular camera shots
Probably the people that scored this film low, confused it with something else. It's a Jurassic World film, so go there to enjoy the cinematic experience, not with some unrealistic expectation of a complex story-telling and character development.
Remember Michael Bay's Transformers movies? It's that much fun! It's got lots of dinosaurs (old and new ones), lots of fights/chases, lots of action, hell yeah! What more could you wish for? Best movie in the entire francize for me.
