Solver (2017)
An obvious lack of experience
The acting is...not great. To be fair, the actors are having to work with a script that feels like it was written by a film student in their first semester at college. The dialogue is stilted and awkward. The characters say what they need to say to progress the meandering plot without feeling like they're taking part in an actual conversation. The characters are also flat and don't behave like normal people a lot of the time.
The movie meanders along as it doesn't feel like there are any stakes involved for most of the movie and the puzzles aren't exciting enough to draw us in.
Everything (plot, premise, characters, fx, acting, etc.) really fell apart after the part with electricity (if you watched this movie, you know what I mean.) Everything went so campy, corny, and cheesy after that moment.
The directing is functional.
You're 50 times more likely to get what you want out of this movie from "National Treasure"
The Final Cut (2004)
Don't expect to get what is written on the tin
This film has too many plotlines, most of them are "all-right" but they come together to create a big pile of mush. The actual thrill in this sci-fi "thriller" doesn't start until the movie is almost over when it should've started halfway through at the latest. The exploration of memory and how we remember things could've been it's own short film or Black Mirror episode and the romantic sub-plot is fine at best and underdeveloped at worst, but both sub-plots take up way too much screen time and leave hardly any room for what is supposed to be the main plot of the film (according to the poster and description.) The last ten minutes of the film would've been a fine ending if the rest of the film focused a lot more on the politically-charged, potentially tension-filled "main" plotline. I would've given this film 4 stars at least for simply being well executed on a technical level but then I remembered Jim Caviezel's horrible fake beard that forced me to reconsider.
