The Bear: Fishes (2023)
The tension...
Bow down to Jamie Lee Curtis.
The episode is such a masterclass in family drama with some of the best depiction of the dysfunctional family dynamics of probably all time. The episode does a great deal in helping the viewers understand the mental space of both Carmy and Natalie. It especially helps to build on Carmy's stressed past. The tension building in the final few minutes really does feel claustrophobic and that's a lot due to the exceptional Editing and masterful performances by the array of Guest stars but in particular from Jamie Lee Curtis. Fresh off her Oscar win, she really claws into the role and cokes up with one hell of a performance- one that has all but locked up the 2024 Emmy race for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Unique.
Just finished watching Don't Look Up. The film has many flaws but i applaud the vision. It's a UNIQUE film.
The film drags in the beginning with jokes that appear forced (the interview with Blanchett and Perry being the best part) but as the movie progresses,I was amazed by how many unique real life scenarios were put forth and handled by Adam McKay. The film really gets in full form in the last act with some heartbreaking moments and the final scene is just epic. The movie is a good commentary on governance, technology, resources but also on the superfluity of the press (and the government) and the transient nature of social media. It also emphasizes on the need to collaborate.
The cast is great (perfect) but i think Melaine Lynskey really stood out to me for her deeply moving perfomance. Leo had a great scene which truly captures the desperation. Streep is a force with a role which is hilarious but also draws parallels to real life figures. Mark Rylance plays against type and JLaw is good but Timothee Chalamet did his job well with limited material. Deserves a SAG Ensemble nom.
The editing is great and is able to capture such a large scale event with such efficiency within 2.5 hrs. The screenplay in the beginning is poor but as the film progresses,it improves and is masterful in the last 25 mins. Appalled that this missed the Oscars VFX shortlist as the VFX is really impression. The score is fine and I wasn't a big fan of the song.
Over-all the film was not as hilarious as I'd anticipated but it was really moving and also scary to think of. Adam McKay did a good job highlighting multiple scenarios.
8/10.
