Élite (2018)
Three decent seasons then failure
I have the start of S4:E3 queued on my TV, for the last 15 minutes actually, while I decide whether to continue with this series which has become a trainwreck. I did enjoy the first two seasons and most of the third, though the situation wasn't looking good. I thought maybe with the graduations and the new students, perhaps good things would follow in S4. Two episodes has shown this isn't going to be the case. They created characters even MORE shallow than the last! The new Principal, Benjamin AKA Father of the Year, is either a psyco or sociopath and his kids are a mix of both-I will take a dozen Lucrecias over that family! No offense intended here but are there really that many gay teenage boys in Spain? Including those willing to engage in three ways? The sex was bearable in the beginning but, toward the end of S3 and definitely the start of S4, it became too graphic and the scenes were too long. This just shows the writer's lack of imagination for content. Anyone can write a raunchy sex story about horny teenagers...we've all been there. Elite could have been Epic.
Resident Alien (2021)
Alan Tudyk steals the show!
I'm sure that I am not the only person who tuned into Resident Alien with um, let's say, less than stellar expectations ('scuse the pun). My husband is a sci-fi "nerd" and I'd qualify myself as maybe mixed, like Spock 🖖 Well, we both adore Alan Tudyk since A Knight's Tale then Dodgeball, so what the heck! Resident Alien was, over all, a fun series and we very much enjoyed the ride. There were times the story did go a bit dark, sometimes melancholy, but watching Harry become more human was interesting. Asta's character was frustrating in her whininess and she was selfish as well. Maybe it was her age, I don't know. The show put together a great cast and the kids were fantastic! Alan Tudyk will probably have that boyish charm at 80!
The Lost Colony of Roanoke: New Evidence (2022)
Very interesting & new information!
As an OBXer, I found the part about the colony moving to Hatteras Island very interesting! All the artifacts they found were pretty cool, but I knew that Tudor Rose would be the ONE as soon as he saw it. I really do hope the Croatoan Tribe does get their name untarnished in the future. I do believe they helped the settlement and I think this dig on Hatteras is proof. Unfortunately, I also believe much is lost in the sea after over 430 years. Maybe there is a survivors camp near Frisco? I hope they find the owner of the golf course land so they can find out one day soon. Keep digging guys, we wanna know!
Bullet Train (2022)
Best Film on Netflix Ever!!!
"Bullet Train" on Netflix. Could be the best 2 hours spent watching Netflix EVER! Not just because of Brad Pitt who, by the way, totally rocks this performance, but because of everything about this film. First let me just say that I believe Pitt is a better actor now than he's ever been, he's more relaxed in his older years. I've always thought he was a very good performer, I just feel he's grown. The film: The entire cast is perfectly matched, the action, the cinematography, the insane yet hilarious violence and the over-the-top craziness of the plot -- just all of it blends into a roller-coaster ride that we didn't want to end. I highly recommend turning off your phone, tucking the kids in bed, suspending your disbelief and watching this film ASAP. You're welcome!!!
Luckiest Girl Alive (2022)
Important & Compelling-Well Done!
Mila Kunis, in my opinion, has performed her best dramatic role as Ani in "Luckiest Girl Alive". Watching her character attempt to keep the facade of a prestigious New York writer who "has it all" from crumbling down was interesting. Subtle at first, then the cracks really became visible. I felt Ani was sabotaging herself, so many times, by not being completely open with Luke, and with others close to her. Obviously holding onto such terrible circumstances and emotions are eventually going to cause some sort of release, either a slow one or explosion. However it IS clear that Luke and his family and Ani's Mother are VERY concerned about what "people might say". I was hoping her confrontation with Dean would be a bit more intense, I "called" the recording of the convo-would have been ridiculous NOT to have. Dean getting paralyzed probably saved a few women from the same fate in college. At least he has a lifetime to think about it, if he does at all. I feel this is "And She Lived Happily Ever After" - definitely after telling the lady to 'F Off' on 5th Avenue. Great job!
Gangster Squad (2013)
Don't Compare This Film to Any Other Gangster Film!
I've been reading the comments and I don't understand why people are comparing Gangster Squad to any other gangster film, especially The Untouchables. Every film has its own identity, if you're watching this film and thinking "Elliott Ness didn't do it this way" then you are wasting your time AND the film.
The Gangster Squad, to this avid film noir fan, was exceptional! Yes, the truth was twisted, however it helped the storyline. The cinematography was incredible and the special effects dazzling. Slow motion combined with super slow motion during some of the shoot-outs was mesmerizing. The costumes and hairstyles were spot-on. Did we see "Carmen Miranda's" bellybutton? Nope! Accurate!
I just can't believe it has taken me almost 10 years to find this film! Like I mentioned, I love film noir. I've seen hundreds of them. For the most part they are performed a bit "over the top", overly dramatic like Gangster Squad. That's the genre. If you're complaining about it, then ya just don't get it.
While We Sleep (2021)
They tried, I think they really tried!
First, don't confuse your audience by basing your film in Kiev yet beginning it like a completely American film then tossing in complete conversations in Russian with no subtitles. The central family all speak English, no accents, live in a million dollar house, he's an artist and we don't know what she does. Yet she "spent time" there as a kid, moved there later, fluent AF. This whole film had the makings of a pretty good horror film, they forgot the horror. Sleep Doc wasn't researched, they could have done better and her character didn't really need a backstory. Terrible intro of the priest, wayyy too "oh I saw your drawing". Then he beats her up at the door?? Terrible impersonation of Paul Bellamy I might add. Maybe, if they try again, they can find Demon Voice #2.
