Warrior Nun (2020)
A refreshing take on the old good versus evil tale.
With each episode titled after a biblical verse, you can't help but check the reason behind this and as the title for Episode 2 suggests in Proverbs 31:25, these warrior nuns are clothed in strength and dignity and the chosen one laughs without fear of the future as she gets a literal new lease on life.
Without revealing too much, I can say that the trailer reminded me of "Equilibrium" and I was expecting an overtly serious story with an equally focused protagonist at its centre. The naivety of Ava makes for great storytelling as she tells her story as it happens and we are brought along for the ride. A dash of female empowerment interspersed with a battle between warrior nuns and demonic forces makes for great viewing pleasure and I thoroughly enjoyed this series.
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
A timely release from the master of Black cinema
This film is one of the best releases this year and it couldn't have been released at a better time.
Minutes into the story of the veterans' return to Nam, we are reminded of the contributions of the African Americans in past wars and the greatness of the fallen is discussed in loving tribute. The foundation for audience buy-in is laid and we begin to understand the motivations of the ensemble's quest in their search for gold long lost.
I enjoyed the camaraderie between "da 5 bloods" and the adventure that Lee has decided to showcase here.
You will not be disappointed. Watch it today!
A Fall from Grace (2020)
Slow burning and surprising
Jasmine, a lawyer with a penchant for plea bargains takes a case that seems to have a foregone conclusion.
The film gets really exciting as it approaches the 60 minute mark and Perry succeeds at telling us a multi-layered tale with unexpected twists and turns.
You will be rewarded for your patient inspection of his latest work.
