Praise This (2023)
A Great Feel-good movie
In the midst of movies and shows where it seems like you need to have background knowledge in order to fully enjoy it, movies like "Praise This" are a godsend (no pub intended).
As someone who isn't a Christian (or any of the other denominations), this movie does not feel like it's trying to shove any beliefs on you as much it's trying to instill faith in yourself and it's a message anyone can be told.
Chloe Bailey kills it as Sam who is ambitious to a fault. Anjelika Washington as Jess is the weird black girl energy I have not gotten in movies and I desperately need.
All of the cast plays the roles they've been given well. My personal highlights being Druski as Aaron, Jekalyn Carr as Kiki, Loren Lott as Kelly, and Koryn Hawthorne as Fallon.
I think my favorite thing is that it didn't linger on the falling apart drama that feel good movies have to have. Listen I know I'm probably alone on this but I hate something having drama just because the plot needs it.
But it is believable because Sam's character is portrayed as a hurt person who doesn't seem to have issue with using others because she thinks she's fighting life all alone.
If you like fun jukebox musicals that are similar to Pitch Perfect, then you should definitely check out this movie.
Charlie's Angels (2019)
TV Show Succesor
I'll admit I was a bit worried about this movie cause my first introduction to Charlie's Angels was through the 2000s movies and I always have reservations about sequels. I feel a lot of people went into this movie expecting a successor to those movies rather than the TV show. I'm in the midst of finally watching the TV show and I can say it definitely shares the same vibes as the 2019 movie.
The movie has fun with itself in a way I wish a lot of movies in this era did without desperately trying to appeal to the #We'reHip attempt like a lot of these reboot/sequels do or try to be "gritty" just cause. It's a fun spy-action movie just like the 2000s movies and just like the first tv show. So long as you go into the movie with that knowledge, it shouldn't be a bad viewing experience.
Charmed (2018)
So Far, So Good
Charmed 2018 still feels like a show finding its footing and there's nothing wrong with that. Since it seems like it's getting a 22 episode season, I would expect that the show finds where it stands at least by the middle of the season. So far the characters are likable in their own way and have pretty believable flaws. I like some of the changes made like the Elders simply being senior witches, "personal gain" actually seems to be a thing and is all about balance compared to how OG Charmed simply mentioned it and nothing else,
I do wish the show would explore more of the sister's relationship with each other (especially with Macy) because that's the basis for Charmed as well as them navigating life as the Charmed Ones. There are bits of seeing them connect and those moments are always the best.
The Harbinger/Angela Wu mini arc was pretty good.
I'm not gonna lie and say it's easy to watch this show in its own right and not compare it the original show. That being said, I prefer this one. When I heard that there was going to be a reboot of Charmed, I started binge watching the original as a celebration and let me tell y'all, it does not hold up. Not in its feminism, not in its strong female characters, and not even in the magic especially as the series went on. I just hope that the writers for this reboot are learning from the mistakes of the first Charmed, and avoiding them.
