The Vault (2017)
Not bad, also not good. Just okay.
The Vault is a bank heist movie with a supernatural twist. That's all I knew going into it and that's probably the best way too.
The film was fine, it wasn't anything spectacular. It starts by jumping straight into the heist so there is not much in way of world building and it's a pretty linear story too with not much character development.
We don't really know or learn too much about anyone involved and it leaves it feeling kind of shallow.
It's pretty cheesy overall, I didn't find the acting to be that amazing, there were no major plot twists I found apart from the minor twist at the end and the scary/tense parts weren't as good as they could have been with a lot of dark shots and flashing lights that took away from the minimal horror going on. It was an alright film, everything that went on was cool and it was neat overall but nothing amazing and not a very memorable film. Watch it and possibly enjoy it when you've got nothing else to do but then forget about it after you move onto the next flick.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Decent suspense thriller. Beats bird box.
I went into A Quiet Place hoping to get out of it what I felt I didn't get from bird box. It did a pretty solid job of doing just that.
Avoiding spoilers the best description is that the film is set in a sort of post apocalyptic world where staying silent is the only way to stay alive.
The movie starts off generating an interesting world and immediately creates tension, a sense of danger and high stakes. Although the lack of dialogue (not totally absent in the film) can feel a bit strange mixed with the reading of subtitles it can begin to get very immersive. What the film does with limited cast and dialogue is quite impressive and I didn't find my attention being taken away. My only possible complaint would be with movie logic like perhaps soundproofing better or creating sound distractions or if natural sound is safe perhaps incorporating that more into your survival tactics, there could be a log of nit picking but I'll avoid that and just enjoy the film because it's overall an intersting and emotional thriller with constant tension and what I felt to be a pretty solid ending.
Bird Box (2018)
Excellent premise not so excellent execution.
This started off as such a promising film. The beginning was very captivating and provoked a lot of questions. So many intersting and unexplained things happen at the start of the film but as it goes on it starts to lose it's interest factor. It begins as this cool supernatural sort of suspense film and gets you excited to see what is actually causing all the chaos. I'll save you the trouble though you never get to actually see the movies antagonist in the end which was a big let down because I was hoping for some sort of physical representation. The film actually plays out as a semi-thriler with more focus on the relationship between the kids and malorie which isn't bad but didn't do a great job of getting me to care what happened to them. I had hoped for a much more Intriguing and shocking conclusion but was let down by all the clichés and flat ending. Overall the premise was unique and promising but I found the execution to be lacking and only somewhat enjoyable.
Psycho IV: The Beginning (1990)
We all.. reminisce about going a little mad sometimes.
Psycho 4 is a pretty solid film. Norman is released once again following the events of the third film and is married. Norman calls into a radio show discussing matricide and recalls his childhood growing up and what drove him to kill his mother as well as the series of events that formed the Norman we know. It's an interesting watch and adds a lot to the psycho lore in the form of a sort of prequel. It's a pretty interesting watch with some tense moments and in keeping with the Psycho formula a great twist and solid ending overall. If you're reading a review for the 4th film surely you've watched the previous 3 and are intersted enough in the lore that you'll enjoy it. This film is a great way to bring closure to the Psycho franchise. Thank you Anthony Perkins for bringing life to such a great character.
Psycho III (1986)
We all go a little mad sometimes.. or just all the time.
Psycho 3 was an alright watch. Compared to the first and second it seemed to lose a bit of its charm. The movie was pretty linear and seemed to play out more like a horror film with the excessive murders and limited plot development. There was some story added to the psycho universe but none of the interesting plot setups and twists you'd expect. I do feel Norman was more mentally unhinged so the charm and awkwardness he had in the previous films was a bit lost. It wasn't as good as the second and it had trouble holding my interest but it was still an okay watch.
Psycho II (1983)
We all go a little mad sometimes.. again.
Surprisingly the sequel to Psycho is actually really good. It's a great watch with tons of twists that'll have you wondering and second guessing everything you see. It's a terrific psychological roller coaster that never stops giving. You feel sympathy for Norman but also wonder if it's him or someone else doing the killing this time which makes you wonder if your sympathy is illplaced. Seeing Norman's psyche unravel through out the film is very Intriguing and It's awesome to see Anthony Perkins reprise his role of Norman Bates so well, It's also fun to see all the call backs to the original such as the rainy first encounter, sandwiches and milk etc. It may not have the feeling that the first film had but it's a nice addition to the story and is enjoyable to watch if you liked the world created within the first.
Psycho (1960)
We all go a little mad sometimes.
Psycho is an interesting watch for sure with some great camera work and fantastic acting by Anthony Perkins he really steals the show and brings the character of Norman Bates to life it's a treat just to watch how perfect he does so. The story is pretty linear and follows the grim events that take place at bates motel, it's hard to say much without spoiling the plot but if you're a fan of psychological horror I'm sure you'd enjoy it. The film is also filled with all sorts of neat motifs and symbolism that are fun to discover within the first or second viewing. This film will surely linger in your brain long after watching it. My appreciation for it just kept evolving and made me want to watch the following sequels as well as the bates motel TV series (a fantastic series!) a very interesting character and world are created within this film and it got me obsessed!
Get Out (2017)
Wow. As good as people have told you it would be.
So it feels silly reviewing a movie that everyone has either seen or reviewed but I do these for me so here goes.
;TLDR - Very interesting movie, really makes you think and gets you hooked right in. Lots of feelings of anxiety and confusion. Very well shot and put together feels like an episode of The Twilight Zone with a rather abrupt but solid ending.
I've held off watching Get Out for while now so I figured I should probably get to it. The movie is often listed as a thriller/horror/comedy which seems like the odd mix of genres but the blend works well. The comedy isn't overly there ruining the suspense or terror, it's very well included in the form of 1 character from time to time.
The tension created right off the bat and the awkward feeling of "something is not right here" is great and makes you very interested in what is happening/going to happen. About 30 minutes into the movie you start to think "am I watching a modern episode of The Twilight Zone?" (How fitting with Jordan Peele being the new host of the show). At first you might feel like the movie is predictable or that you know what's going to happen and in some ways you may be right but there are still some interesting story points that you might not expect. Overall it was very enjoyable very captivating and a pretty fabtastic movie in the end.
Coherence (2013)
Suspenseful, Thought Provoking and a good Tension Builder.
Right off the bat I'm going to avoid summarizing this film as that would lead to spoilers.
Coherence was made on a very low budget and takes place primarily in one location which in no way hurts this film. For those coming in skeptical it may first appear to be a cheesy low budget film but after the first 10 or 20 minutes the real essence of it starts to shine through. This movie does a great job at creating tense scenarios, feelings of uneasiness and lots of head scratching moments. What I really enjoy is that all these feelings are created out of paranoia and not your cliche horror/thriller moments (for me it greatly reflects a sort of Twilight Zone feeling). Without revealing anything too major people who are fans of the above mentioned as well as "Multiple Realities" or strange inexplicable occurrences will really enjoy this film and I feel that the not so recognizable cast does a very good job at making the whole thing feel a bit more on the realistic/believable side. They're fantastic at acting and portraying everything so naturally.
In short this movie is trippy, it's going to make you think and want to rewatch it and it's going to create some great tense and paranoia induced situations which I believe most people will enjoy!
