Xuan ya zhi shang (2021)
The suspense is good, can be better
Before this, I always thought "The Message" was the best one of this type. But Cliff Walkers impressed me with its story-telling.
Back in 1940s, four of the specially-trained spies were sent to commit a mission--To protect an informant and send him out so he can tell the truth about the government to the world. However, there are moles among the four. So it's harsh for the real agents to do the task.
Firstly, the acting is quite satisfying. Zhangyi played a senior spy in the movie, and his performance of being tortured was quite impressive.
Xiong Shi Shaonian (2021)
Definitely one of the best Chinese cartoon
This animation is one of the 2021 movies that raised a hot debate. But in my personal opinion, I am What I am is an awesome Chinese movie.
The story is about a weak teenage boy called A Juan, who's also passionate about lion dancing, a traditional Chinese art performance in which performers mimic a lion's movements in a lion costume, takes part in the top lion dance competition for the honor and money and his journey of it.
Some criticized it for the characters' appearance, saying it uglifies Guangdong people; some think the Lion dancing learning is too fast and too unrealistic. Well, those make sense in some way, but hey, it's animation after all(not a documentary), we use exaggerations all the time. As a drama/animation, it's nothing wrong when the director puts the focus on the growth of the character rather than discussing how we learn the traditional lion dancing for like 10 years.
The reasons I like this movie are:
a. This movie chooses to tell a story that we aren't that familiar with, which is rather bold a move in China. In most cases, this usually means a bad box office. But this movie conveys a good concept that a good Chinese animation movie can independently discuss local culture and local stories. It doesn't have to be those big IPs like the Monkey Kind(Sun WuKong) or Nezha(Deity), that it can be recognized and appreciated by the audience even if none of the characters are famous.
B. The first half part of the movie is quite relaxing, you laugh with the boys and you look for a master with them. And you laugh because they are funny, the twists are natural, not deliberately designed.
C. The end part is realistic. After A Juan went won first place in that competition, he is still down to earth and went to Shanghai for work. I especially like the part where he already decided to give up but on seeing the competition he just plucks up the courage and goes back to the game. The struggle is impressive and tense.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
Detailed portrait of middle-aged woman
I finished this show in the former half of this year 2021. And overall it was awesome. Instead of focusing on one or two criminal cases, the director has put more focus on our protagonist-Mare's messy private life and her family background, making it easier to emphasize with this character. She had her glory time for sure. And she followed her last father's step and became criminal police in a close-knit American town outside of Pennsylvania-Easttown.
Mare is devoted to working, trying to be responsible, and keeping the town safe. She's like everyone's big sis- she knows whose brother is doing drugs, whose child is missing and the case is unsolved... In the meanwhile, she is suffering from the trauma that her own son killed himself in front of her. So Mare is a complicated character and Kate Winslet did a great job portraying her. She presented the pain and the exhaustion of a middle-aged woman perfectly, carrying the weight of her family, her job and others' expectations can never be easy.
Therefore, instead of focusing on crimes in the town, the director showed us details of the real struggles and all kinds of problems in a small town: Complex social connections, teen's early pregnancy, burdens of life and work, betrayal, cheating, gay issues...All of these elements just made this show real. What's more, the tense gunfight in the last episode between Mare and the criminal is awesome, too.
Sex Education (2019)
Sex can be so fun
Netflix again.
Teens, friendship, and love. In this season, Moordale welcomes its new headmaster, along with the revolutions. New uniforms, new regulations. How will the gangster of students cope with those?
All in all, it's a good teen show but just for fun, nothing so meaningful, but it is suitable for you to kill time
Btw, Maev's new bang is horrible.
Eat Pray Love (2010)
Emily in Paris VS Eat Pray Love: Never Fear to Embrace the Unknown
Will you accept the job in a country that speaks a different language, that you are totally unfamiliar with, that you have no friends and families? Well, Emily nodded. Speaking of last October's hit shows, there's one rom-com you can't ignore: Emily in Paris.
Take a peek at the cast:
Lily Collins: Omg?! Isn't she stunning? Born in 1989, Lily is now 31. But no matter from her dressing, or her skin condition, you can never tell she's over 30, can you? Especially as an American lady.
Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu: Emily's mean boss, but is elegant indeed. A charming French lady.
Ashley Park: A rich nanny who just ran away from an embarrassing(disastrous) TV show performance in China.
Lucas Bravo: A promising chef of a local restaurant in Paris, also Emily's neighbor on 'quatrième' floor. Emily's crush and Camielle's boyfriend. Tbh, many of my friends are turned heads over heels seeing his cute face.
What would it be like if, all of a sudden, you are about to be relocated to one of the most romantic cities in the world? Take it or leave it. Well, Emily Cooper is in such a situation. She is a senior marketing expert in Chicago and the firm decided to move her to a corporate marketing firm in Paris, in order to provide an 'American Point of View' for it. Emily nodded and started an exuberant journey (or adventure) in Paris.
emily in paris,ring doorbell
Actually, this drama reminds me of another famous movie 'Eat Pray Love' by Julia Roberts. It's also a movie that took me 6 times to finally finish watching (idk why). There are certain similarities between Emily and Liz for sure. But the performance Liz shows after arriving at a whole new country is distinct from Emily a lot.
The similarities:
Both are relocated to another whole new place
Eat Pray Love,Liz in Italy
Unlike Emily who desires a new environment and filled with fantasies, Liz is more determined after struggling for years in her work and unhappy marriage. And she is clearly less stressed while encountering the obstacles the new life brings to her. As someone who has never been to Italy, Liz seems to be more prepared. She started to learn Italian by herself via some language book and already got a hang of it; While Emily is struggling to understand the basic daily-used words.
Both lost their love in the past
Liz finally decided to walk out of her long-lasted marriage and start a new chapter in life. And Emily broke up with her fiance in the 2nd episode (which surprised me since.
The Mule (2018)
How an 90-year-old Veteran Reconcile with His Past
IMDB: 7/10 (83,156 ratings)
Rotten Tomatos : Tomatometer-70% (188 counts)
Audience Score: 66% (3,795 counts)
As a living legend, Clint Eastwood is definitely a milestone that you can't ignore if you are gonna watch Hollywood works. Million Dollar Baby, The Bridges of Madison County, and so countless other wild Western-themed pieces that you can easily recall have him in them.
Time passed by, at the age of 90, rumor has it that The Mule could be Eastwood's retirement work. We are not certain, but it seems that this one could be a great curtain call. This movie is actually based on a true and startling story from the New York Times Magazine. A retired 90-year-old veteran who has served in World War II, gradually found his values in shipping the drugs for the Mexican drug lord. So Eastwood decided, that at a similar age, to play this neglected, lonely, grumpy old man who's broke and has been isolated by all the women of his family-wife, daughter, granddaughter. Suddenly he is offered a new way of making easy money by a total stranger-To drive and deliver the 'goods' to a certain place and get well paid...
V for Vendetta (2005)
The Soul behind the Mask We'll Never Forget
"Voila! In view humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the "vox populi" now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin, van guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.
The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.
Verily this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honour to meet you and you may call me V."
I believe after all the years, the stunning lines still ring a bell. Well, this is the movie that I was supposed to finish ten years ago. Quit in the midway and it never occurred to me that I need to finish it, until recently I happened to see the intro of this movie. Anyway, I gotta admit I was awestruck after watching it.
In futuristic Britain, the whole country is under the rule of a tyrannical government that stole the power by heinous crimes. And V was a victim of it. As an anarchist, V has been plotting for nearly a decade, aiming to destroy this ridiculous government and get his revenge done, in that he had been burned too much to show his face to others ever again. But the scheme all comes to be questioned until V meets his destiny-Evey, a plain girl he saved from Fingerman and worked at the Network.

Wo men yu e de ju li (2019)
The Life Must Go On
Before you watch the drama, just take a minute or two to imagine: that you are the decisive head of the News department of a Network, but underneath your strong cover, you are actually a hurt and sensitive mom who has been suffering from losing your son because of a brutal gunshot incident that you constantly blame yourself on. Life goes on and you permanently keep yourself busy so that you wouldn't have time for sorrow. But accidentally, you get to know that one of the staff that you trust is a family of the murderer of your son. What would you deal with this?
Well, this is what happens in The World Between Us, a delicate realism-themed drama poking into the current status quo of the news industry and the handling of the sociopath and psychopath criminals as well.
Darkest Hour (2017)
A vivid, grumpy but desicive and caring Churchill was portrayed
Throughout our history, there are many heads of State have won the Nobel Prize. However, only a few of them won the Nobel Prize in Literature. And Winston Churchill was one of them who had won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. With his powerful and stimulating speeches, many soldiers were encouraged, civilians soothed.
For most people, Churchill was recognized as the Prime Minister that saved Britain from extreme misery of World War II. In fact, he enjoys a variety of identities such as correspondent, writer and soldier. No wonder he won the Nobel Prize in Literature instead of Peace award.
The Morning Show (2019)
A Dagger Penetrating the Network
Frankly speaking, usually I would just copy and paste the trailer from YouTube and let you guys watch, but not this time. The soundtracks in this show are so fantastic that I just can't help going over again. (BTW the trailer is awesome, too)
Focusing on Alex Levy and Mitch Kesler, the TV hosts from a Network which produces a popular morning show for over a decade, its culture, behind-the-scene stories and scandals become increasingly intriguing among the public. And oddly, as the only show which hasn't been affected by the prevailing #Metoo Campaign, something is not right in this seemingly harmonious team. That day has finally come, the successful and beloved Mitch had been accused of severe misconduct over several females, leaving his co-host Alex unhinged at 3am in the morning. As an audience, you can easily feel the dramatic tension within the 2-3 hours before another day's morning show begins. You follow Alex to sleep, to wake up and work out, to go to work and get shocked by the heavy info, to sit on the chair of the show and broadcast the devastating news to America.
