The American Society of Magical Negroes (2024)
Very Funny and Spot On
Great debut from writer and director Kobi Libii, and great performances from David Alan Grier, Justice Smith and An-Li Bogan. Some smaller characters seemed to be non-actors, but overall very funny and insightful. The premise is clever and the issue is very real, they also touched on the difficulties that women face in our society. Loved the sets when they were in the ASMN chambers. Clever takedown of social media with 'MeetBox' scenes. The reviews that chafe against this film only serve to underline the fact that they hit the mark with this one. If you haven't witnessed the situations and behaviors that are depicted, then you don't get out much.
Obamaland (2017)
Sophomoric Humor
Juvenile and puerile. A comedy that often includes toilet humor, and gags that appeal to the immature. Were the "actors" asked to bring all their own props and costumes? Production values were so low that it was more like a basement film. A few decent performances were ruined by a complete lack of sync with the soundtrack. Did they record voices first, and then try to match them to the film? Poorly written. Was there even a director? I want my time back.
The Gaelic Curse (2016)
Amateur Effort
This film suffers from poor writing, poor directing, and weak acting. Production values were quite low. Much of the story did not make sense, and the shots were poorly set up. Not recommended.
The Selling (2011)
No Sale
Not completely terrible, but deeply flawed. Lacks direction, and is poorly written with lots of obvious jokes. Acting was mostly okay, with a nice cameo from Barry Bostwick of Rocky Horror fame. Some scenes, however, were overacted, and the cast was a bit uneven. Worth a look, but don't expect much.
There's No Place Like Utopia (2014)
Straw Man Argument
This so-called *filmmaker attempts to make a spurious argument, but does not find support for any of his points. His logical fallacies, including Slippery-Slope, are a tortured attempt to link things that are unrelated. A complete waste of time.
Hex (2017)
Too Dull For Words
Incredibly slow, dull film that badly needed a screenwriter. Nothing happens.
Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party (2016)
Absolute Nonsense
So many lies, half-truths, misinformation and propaganda. Hard to believe anybody buys this garbage. Revisionist "history."
Moose (2015)
Is There Such A Thing As Community Film?
This would be the result if your local community theater decided to put on a film. Poor writing, worse acting, and excruciating pacing. Avoid.
Door in the Woods (2019)
A Film for Friends and Family
I honestly wonder who the audience for this film is. Bad, unoriginal concept, low production values, weak screenplay, and non-compelling characters. Don't bother.
The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu (2009)
Lovecraft Spinning in his Grave
Student film level quality on this one. Very disappointing. If you're going to do it, do it well or don't do it at all. The filmmakers were the only ones having fun.
The Snarling (2018)
The Snoring
Genuinely awful from start to finish. Badly written, with the most stale jokes possible, badly directed, with interminable scenes that go nowhere, badly acted, with more scenery chewing than a bad amateur dramatics society production. That is, if there were any scenery. The only upside was that it was relatively short. You would have to be brain dead to like this film.
The Scottish Play (2017)
Amateur Effort
Poor writing, weak direction and mediocre acting, along with bad editing mar this offering. It feels like maybe a community college academic decided to make a TV show, and got his friends and students to help out. No one involved seems to know the first thing about live theatre, or its superstitions. I would be amazed if any of them had even read Macbeth. On the plus side, the opening credits are amazing. Good work there.
