A Week with Rebecca (2020)
A decent story in a short movie.
If Dust has shown me one thing, it's that most of the stories have a strange and often, confusing endings, and often, a confusing story as well.
Finally, one that has a beginning, and middle and an end that leaves you wanting more, but completes the story in a way that doesn't leave you scratching your head. It's well worth watching and tells an entire story in a few minutes that would take Hollywood an hour or more to tell.
Nika Burnett was an ideal actress cast for the role. Attractive, but not insanely sexy or beautiful or huge breasted as you would imagine a companion robot would be. Just an ordinary attractive girl who could easily be mistaken for a human. Not an attention grabbing beacon of unrealism that would practically stand out and scream "Sex Bot!" anywhere you went.
Nika herself played the role very well and convincingly, as did Phil Kruse, a normal guy who is volunteered, almost against his will and is not quite sure about testing a robot as a companion.
Scorpion (2014)
Would give it 10 except for the ending.
A great series and well worth watching. It accurately depicts the social problems faced by those with above average IQ in my view, while giving a relatively believeable storyline at the same time. Maybe a bit of imagination added, but generally, a decent story.
As with all movie productions, timing can be a bit off, you have 24 hours and have to fly from America to Swizerland before you even start, you are not going to get there by plane and travel halfway across Switzerland to the place you need to go to in one hour, even Superman would be hard pushed to achieve that.
**spoiler alert**
My real problem was with the ending of the series. All the way through, Walter O'Brien was the main character and the hero of the whole series, aided by his team of brainiacs. His love interest, Paige was always there to help him understand the social graces and explain his inability to understand social norms to those he offended. At the end, it was twisted in a way that didn't provide a real conclusion to the series and really made you feel that they painted Paige as incompetent at her job and Walter as the villain. I also felt sorry for her son Ralph, who became part of the team and felt that he was somewhat left out in the cold.
The Worst Witch (2017)
Not a bad remake and brought up to date.
Another remake of the 90's series.
Felt a bit uneasy about Raquel Cassidy trying to copy the stlye of Professor Snape from the Potter films, right down to the nose held high and disdainful slow talking with pauses where there shouldn't be between words, in an attempt to intimidate. I'm sure she could have created a personality of her own for that character instead of copying someone else. Just listen and you can hear Alan Rickman saying exactly the same words. Having seen both the movie and the 90's series of the Worst Witch, I saw that Snape was an original personality created by Alan Rickman and not a copy of the earlier Worst Witch film or series characters.
Apart from that, the new series is quite fun to watch (I only watch it for the kids of course) ;)
Luchshe, chem lyudi (2018)
A very well made series.
I have to admit that, seeing it was Russian did make me pause. Their social differences could make it hard to get into. However, I was thoroughly surprised and enjoyed every minute. Several things are going on at once and it's hard to follow at first, but they seem to gel together into the main plot by around halfway through the season and you start to see all the things are interconnected in a twisted sort of way.
Guys watching this will immediately see why Paulina Andreeva was chosen to play the part of Arisa, to say she is stunningly attractive is a gross understatement. As a real bot, the model would be a best seller for sure and you start to wish such bots were available right now.
A couple of things in the series though. Lots of high tech stuff being used and worn, but cars that still come from the 90's. I guess the budget didn't run to very much CGI.
The second would be noticed more by geeks like myself. The "chip" that ran the bots was tiny. Even in the future, it would have to be a lot bigger than that to store all the memory and routines for functionality of a fully self sustaining AI.
One continuity problem I noticed. In Episode 6, the two women were talking in the bar, each with a glass of wine in front of them. The lawyers glass was half full in the first shot from her left side, just after she drank from it. In the second shot from the right side of her, it was almost empty. When the scene shifted back to her left side, it was half full again.
Total Recall (2012)
Not a patch on the original.
I watched this on Netflix since I liked the original. How disappointing.
The whole plot was weak and the two main actors, Colin Farrell and Jessica Biel were totally cast wrong in my view. Sorry to say that this role is not a strong point for either of them. The Only redeeming factor was Kate Bekinsale playing the part of a psycho b**ch from hell and the fact that she played it so well is really disturbing.
The alteration of the original story should have led to this being called Total Recall 2 as there was no Mars colony and no ancient alien mechanisms, the whole story takes place on Earth in the future. Sadly, the storyline is so weak that I spent most of the movie looking to see if there was something else worth my time instead. You could sleep through the first half of the movie and still see everything worth watching. Most of the methods he used to escape being killed was sheer fluke, there was no real skill involved. Most people would deem him the luckiest guy on earth in that respect.
All in all, a typical mediocre Wiseman film, lots of action but most of it very repetitive.
