1. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)

81 Metascore

Harry Potter finds himself competing in a hazardous tournament between rival schools of magic, but he is distracted by recurring nightmares.

Director: Mike Newell | Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Eric Sykes

Votes: 681,683 | Gross: $290.01M

As a cohesive film I like this HP is the best, with all the big events like the Quidditch World Cup, the Yule Ball and the Triwizard Tornament there's plenty going on. I think Mike Newell's past experience as director contributed to making this the best Potter. I really love the art direction too, the costumes and setting really suit the mood. Key scene: Where Professor McGonnagall announces the Yule Ball and makes Ron dance with her to Harry and the Weasley twins' delight.

2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)

PG | 152 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

65 Metascore

An orphaned boy enrolls in a school of wizardry, where he learns the truth about himself, his family and the terrible evil that haunts the magical world.

Director: Chris Columbus | Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Richard Harris

Votes: 856,245 | Gross: $317.58M

Number two and three on my list are pretty equal, it's hard to pick which is second best of the movies but I think HP1 deserves it. It's perfect, innocent and fresh. It's when we experience all the magic for the first time and it does justice to the book. Key scene: All of it! Harry's first Quidditch game and Richard Harris as Dumbledore visiting Harry in the hospital wing at the end.

3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010)

PG-13 | 146 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

65 Metascore

As Harry, Ron and Hermione race against time and evil to destroy the Horcruxes, they uncover the existence of the three most powerful objects in the wizarding world: the Deathly Hallows.

Director: David Yates | Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Bill Nighy

Votes: 599,274 | Gross: $295.98M

I was suprised and so glad at how good DH turned out, I think the opportunity to get away from the usual Hogwarts setting and run of events (Dursley's, Express, Hogwarts...) was embraced and it made a completely different movie from the others. Getting to see the characters without the usual setting was refreshing and new ideas such as the animated sequence for the Three Brothers story, Harry and Hermione dancing and the locket-horcrux scene complemented the arty feel of the film. Key scene: The Seven Potters, when George slinks into the kitchen interupting a tender moment between Harry and Ginny before the wedding and the Ministry.

4. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

PG | 142 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

82 Metascore

Harry Potter, Ron and Hermione return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for their third year of study, where they delve into the mystery surrounding an escaped prisoner who poses a dangerous threat to the young wizard.

Director: Alfonso Cuarón | Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Richard Griffiths

Votes: 691,725 | Gross: $249.36M

This one is rather different from the movie it follows and movie that follows this one, but it plays a large role in keeping the series new which is why I like this take. I also think the Dursley's are always a great inclusion to the movies and I love that they are in this one a bit more. Key scene: The Knight Bus, Hogsmeade with Harry under the invisibility cloak scaring Malfoy and friends.

5. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)

PG | 161 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

63 Metascore

Harry Potter lives his second year at Hogwarts with Ron and Hermione when a message on the wall announces that the legendary Chamber of Secrets has been opened. The trio soon realize that, to save the school, it will take a lot of courage.

Director: Chris Columbus | Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Richard Harris

Votes: 692,504 | Gross: $261.99M

Not too different from HP1: great screenplay and just perfect adaption. I think Chris Columbus did a great job starting off the series. The whole end part in the Chamber is great, it's funny with Lockhart, mysterious with the young Tom Riddle and exciting with the Basalisk hunt and happy with Hagrid's return at the end, even if it is a bit corny! Key scene: When Harry is rescued from Privet Drive and taken to the Burrow.

6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

PG | 153 min | Action, Adventure, Family

78 Metascore

As Harry Potter begins his sixth year at Hogwarts, he discovers an old book marked as "the property of the Half-Blood Prince" and begins to learn more about Lord Voldemort's dark past.

Director: David Yates | Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon

Votes: 595,712 | Gross: $301.96M

HP6 is to HP5, as HP2 is to HP1: in the same style as the film before without much new in terms of style or mood. It's fine for the first two because they are great, but I didn't find Half Blood Prince particularly amazing. Slughorn was good and his party's were a good change from the usual events. The return of Quidditch was good, but a couple of funny moments didn't make up for the overall lack of direction. Key scene: Harry drugged on Felix Felicis is terrific!

7. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)

PG-13 | 138 min | Action, Adventure, Family

71 Metascore

With their warning about Lord Voldemort's return scoffed at, Harry and Dumbledore are targeted by the Wizard authorities as an authoritarian bureaucrat slowly seizes power at Hogwarts.

Director: David Yates | Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Brendan Gleeson

Votes: 633,414 | Gross: $292.00M

HP5 was my least favourite movie, I'm not sure what exactly it was. The addition of Luna Lovegood saved this movie otherwise it's kind of dull. So much was left out and the costumes, performances and visual editing (the newspaper transitions) I wasn't much a fan of. A new screenwriter was bought in for this film, so maybe that impacted the flow? I feel as though the highlights of No 5 & 6 aren't as plentiful and they are were monotonous. Key scene: The DA in the Room of Requirement
