1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

G | 149 min | Adventure, Sci-Fi

84 Metascore

After uncovering a mysterious artifact buried beneath the Lunar surface, a spacecraft is sent to Jupiter to find its origins: a spacecraft manned by two men and the supercomputer HAL 9000.

Director: Stanley Kubrick | Stars: Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, Daniel Richter

Votes: 719,778 | Gross: $56.95M

The quintessential film that focuses on man's existence in the realm of space, otherworldly intelligent beings and our role with technology. Combined with a uniquely harrowing soundtrack and psychedelic special effects, this movie will transcend the test of time for many more decades to come.

2. Contact (1997)

PG | 150 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

Dr. Ellie Arroway, after years of searching, finds conclusive radio proof of extraterrestrial intelligence, sending plans for a mysterious machine.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt

Votes: 293,186 | Gross: $100.92M

The brilliant Carl Sagan penned this marvelous story that packs so much: the exciting discovery of another intelligent life form, inter-planetary exchange of technology, the mayhem that surrounds such an event, politics and power-jostling, science vs religion, fear & terrorism, corporate influence and even a dash of romance! It's a highly imaginative film that doesn't try to overwhelm the audience with explosive special effects, but rather with a storyline that unfolds drama wonderfully and an ending with great irony. This really should have been a 3-hour plus movie.

3. Under the Skin (I) (2013)

R | 108 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

80 Metascore

A mysterious young woman seduces lonely men in the evening hours in Scotland. However, events lead her to begin a process of self-discovery.

Director: Jonathan Glazer | Stars: Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy McWilliams, Lynsey Taylor Mackay, Dougie McConnell

Votes: 158,283 | Gross: $2.61M

With a modestly small budget, produced by Film4 & CreativeScotland, Under the Skin is an example of how to develop a great sci-fi movie with scant dialogue. This film deserves to be an essential focus of study in art film curriculums, demonstrating what can be achieved with sight and sound to produce a surreal atmosphere. It must be noted that some of its material and ideas were borrowed from other movies, but nevertheless the end result is a breathtaking film, heads and shoulders above anything else that multi-million dollar Hollywood can produce, creative-wise. Here's to a fresh minimalist approach to science fiction!

4. Another Earth (2011)

PG-13 | 92 min | Drama, Mystery, Romance

66 Metascore

On the night of the discovery of a duplicate Earth in the Solar system, an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer cross paths in a tragic accident.

Director: Mike Cahill | Stars: Brit Marling, William Mapother, Matthew-Lee Erlbach, DJ Flava

Votes: 100,035 | Gross: $1.32M

While this is a sci-fi movie, it must be noted that the central plot theme is really an investigation in the psychology of the human self, of how we as a species will react if there suddenly was another parallel earth. The story is told in a paradox of events of how two lives interwind each another, right at the onset of the discovery of another earth: a student, upon celebrating her admission into MIT, gets into a tragic accident with a professor. Instead of studying 4 years of astrophysics, the student is confined to 4 years of juve detention, while the professor succumbs to a 4 year coma. Both lives intervene 4 years later. This is the first of hugely talented Brit Marling's work.

5. Solaris (1972)

PG | 167 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

93 Metascore

A psychologist is sent to a station orbiting a distant planet in order to discover what has caused the crew to go insane.

Director: Andrei Tarkovsky | Stars: Natalya Bondarchuk, Donatas Banionis, Jüri Järvet, Vladislav Dvorzhetskiy

Votes: 98,294

A great many movie critics have cited and praised the work of Soderbergh's much-shortened version, but I feel his remake failed to convey the great philosophical debates on the purpose of life, love and existentialism from the original Russian version. It is from the depth of such dialogues between the characters Kelvin, Snaut & Sartorious, that the viewer can truly appreciate Tarkovsky's film interpretation of Lem's novel.

6. Her (2013)

R | 126 min | Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi

91 Metascore

In a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need.

Director: Spike Jonze | Stars: Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson, Rooney Mara

Votes: 669,857 | Gross: $25.57M

"Her" is a clever and poignant film that focuses on our society's habitual dependence on technology and how it continues to alienate us from one another. While hardly an original idea, Spike Jonze's movie beautifully captures this dystopian behaviour of ours, but set in a not too distant future. Scarlett Johansson, in a complete opposite from her cold, calculated and alien appearance in "Under the Skin", appears here in her most warm, human and spontaneous charismatic character - but featuring only her voice. Between these two pillars of movies, Johansson has built up quite a formidable resume demonstrating her skills.
