Top Five "Flight of the Conchords" Episodes

5.) The naivety of the characters is what makes the show so charming. Murray (the bands manager) assumes that since he's on tour with a band, the guys will behave like rock stars (driving cars into swimming pools ala Keith Moon). Bret and Jermaine are so low key that this very idea is pretty funny. They seem to accidentally stumble into trouble and Murray grumbles and pulls his hair at their uncontrollable antics. This is a very funny parody of a band on the road.

4.) My favorite character of the series has to be Murray. Rhys Darby has exceptional comedic timing and a fantastic chemistry with the band. Not only is this all around a strong episode but some of my favorite moments from Murray are in this episode (the bit with the live webcam is classic). The LSD trip is also very well done as well as the threesome talk between Bret and Jermaine.

3.) The series finale is a very satisfying conclusion to the show. I always thought the Mel character was pretty thinly written throughout the show, she is only there for one joke. This episode makes good use out of her and her soft spoken husband, dividing up the band like kids in a divorce drama. You can't help but feel a little hope for Murray's idea of a musical to save the band's career. The series stays true to its reality and the Conchords' play not only colossally flops, but they are sent back to New Zealand. The series has a very optimistic end: even though their dreams have been crushed, damn it they can still rock.

2.) I haven't mentioned the music of the show and it's definitely a high point. As fans may already know, Flight of the Conchords is a real life comedy group that has been around for years and many of the songs that they had already written were worked into the show. I mention this now because this episode has my favorite Conchords song "Hurt Feelings." The two versions that are performed are both very inspired (the rap version and the slow "Magnolia" parody). Sometimes the music videos in the show seem a bit tacked on but this is one where they seemed absolutely essential to the episode. This is one of the funniest episodes as well as one of the most creative.

1.) I've never laughed harder at any other episode in the show. Everything is in place here; Bret and Jermaine try to do a good deed without any idea of the damage they are doing, Murray's hope for the band's success has never been more tragic (or hilarious), Will Forte as the actor Ben is perfect casting, and the band finally addresses the popularity of "Lord of the Rings" in a music video that is probably the single greatest achievement of the show. If I had to pick a single episode to show someone the humor of the show, I would easily select this one. The cameo at the end was another surprising treat that is just the icing on the cake. The evanescence of the show was a little disappointing, but it just makes the good episodes like these all the more special.
