1. The Passion of the Christ (2004)

R | 127 min | Drama

47 Metascore

Depicts the final twelve hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, on the day of his crucifixion in Jerusalem.

Director: Mel Gibson | Stars: Jim Caviezel, Monica Bellucci, Maia Morgenstern, Christo Jivkov

Votes: 251,174 | Gross: $370.78M

Mostly panned by critics, this movie has a 50% and "rotten" rating on rottentomatoes.com. However, this film is a novel look at the Jesus story. the Biblical account of Jesus' life has been told so many times that it's hard to find a recently made one that feels original. This film not only achieves a great degree of freshness, it has a great ensemble cast, engaging music, and superb cinematography by Caleb Deschanel. It's also in aramaic, which, is quite rare or even original.

2. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)

PG | 136 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

51 Metascore

Two Jedi escape a hostile blockade to find allies and come across a young boy who may bring balance to the Force, but the long dormant Sith resurface to claim their original glory.

Director: George Lucas | Stars: Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Jake Lloyd

Votes: 856,607 | Gross: $474.54M

This film is often regarded as the weakest among all of the Star Wars films. It even has the lowest score out of the six, on rottentomatoes.com. However, people forget that this film was made in 1999. While we're used to CGI epics now, back in 1999 this was a spectacle. The destroyer droids were cool when they first came out, and people had to squint to see if the battle droids were real. Also, the script is pretty tight with non-stop action that culminates with a triple climax. The acting is better (arguably) than in the other two prequels. Also, the Darth Maul saber sequence is one of the best fight scenes of all the six films.

3. The Mummy (1999)

PG-13 | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

48 Metascore

At an archaeological dig in the ancient city of Hamunaptra, an American serving in the French Foreign Legion accidentally awakens a mummy who begins to wreak havoc as he searches for the reincarnation of his long-lost love.

Director: Stephen Sommers | Stars: Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo

Votes: 461,166 | Gross: $155.25M

4. Sucker Punch (2011)

PG-13 | 110 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

33 Metascore

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone

Votes: 252,829 | Gross: $36.39M

5. Troll 2 (1990)

PG-13 | 95 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

A vacationing family discovers that the entire town they're visiting is inhabited by goblins, disguised as humans, who plan to eat them.

Director: Claudio Fragasso | Stars: Michael Paul Stephenson, George Hardy, Margo Prey, Connie Young

Votes: 34,681

Troll 2 sucks. It has over-the-top bad acting, cheap effects, cheesy dialogue, and weird music. But I think it's underrated because I don't think it's the "worst ever made." This film has a soul, something about it makes you want to see it again. The filmmakers believed in this film--they didn't set out to make a bad film, they put a lot of care into this flick and the artistic integrity shows. There are plenty of Hollywood films where the directors and filmmakers seem to know that they're working on a bad project--it shows. But this isn't one of them.
