Help finding story-concipiating stories

Some of the best visual media, are series/movies that I wish I didn't tire of rewatching. Nonetheless, what these stories are, is also stories that took the old stories and visual tablaux and made them new again. Therefore the search must continue. Please post titles below if you think you have valid examples of this, and they will be added or not according to personal relevance. Probably in a sence most could be called barroque in their themes.

1. Gummo (1997)

R | 89 min | Comedy, Drama

19 Metascore

Lonely residents of a tornado-stricken Ohio town wander the deserted landscape trying to fulfill their boring, nihilistic lives.

Director: Harmony Korine | Stars: Nick Sutton, Jacob Sewell, Lara Tosh, Jacob Reynolds

Votes: 38,258 | Gross: $0.02M

The southern gothic, rural noir, wat'cha-wanna-call'it. It is the apocalypse placed in the present. The ordered world haven't reached here or isn't valid here anymore. Of the world ending renderings, this is the one that feels most relevant and right to me. Made before the latest large zombie/wasteland/etc media-boom. And not about surviving as much as it is about an absence of meaning or morality.

2. Penny Dreadful (2014–2016)

TV-MA | 60 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, scientist Victor Frankenstein and medium Vanessa Ives unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London.

Stars: Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Reeve Carney

Only partly about Frankenstein's monster, "the new Prometheus", the series still makes a more encompassing portrait of this trope, than watching several movies/series and tying to read the novel with contemporary eyes has afforded me. Today, the idea/story of Mary Shelley constructing a philosophical, spiritual, political and genre-expanding horror work is more vivid than anything the original work managas to evoke in me. And this is one of the things that the freedom of the meta-perspective of this series manages to do.

3. Black Sails (2014–2017)

TV-MA | 60 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

Follows Captain Flint and his pirates twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel "Treasure Island."

Stars: Jessica Parker Kennedy, Toby Stephens, Hannah New, Zach McGowan

Votes: 113,727

By taking something that was a children's story my father used to mention, The treasure island, and making it fit with my own adulthood, complexity and changed visual references, is an important feat on accounts to how vivid childhood memories of stories can seem. But then the memories seem to evaporate when you try to revisit the story. That is what I like with this series. The work put in to make the old story vivid, plausible, complex and gritty again. Still true to the core of its mystic origins. Also the short lived pirate era fits in the toten tanz theme of this list so far.

4. Hannibal (2013–2015)

TV-MA | 45 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

Explores the early relationship between renowned psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter and a young FBI criminal profiler who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers.

Stars: Hugh Dancy, Mads Mikkelsen, Caroline Dhavernas, Laurence Fishburne

Votes: 276,683

It is strange when I try to talk with people who tried to follow this series but got turned off, or never started on accounts to that "The Silence of the lambs" is movie that cannot be bettered. For me it is reversed, I can now only watch the original movies as a homage to what came out of them, that is this work. Concepts, probably not invented by the show but fleshed out in detail, like the autismspectrum empath and the memory palace, I keep in my head at all times.
