6. Michael Laudrup - en fodboldspiller (1993)

74 min | Documentary, Biography, Sport

A stil-life of marvellous Danish footballer Michael Laudrups performance on the Barcelona dreamteam 1989-94.

Director: Jørgen Leth | Stars: Michael Laudrup, Johan Cruijff, Jørgen Leth

Votes: 159

While Michael Laudrup is undoubtedly a world class football player, this "documentary" is pretty worthless. Leth, the director, decides not to focus on anything else other than the ballet-like moves Laudrup makes and while he truly is a great, 70 minutes of superslow shots of his legs interspersed with a couple of interviews and Spanish people saying how great he is on cue, left me feeling decidedly underwhelmed. Not recommended and only 1.5 stars because it is after all Laudrup.

16. Bleeder (1999)

98 min | Crime, Drama

Two stories for the price of one: Lenny works in a video shop and tries to get aquainted with the waitress Lea. Leo beats his pregnant wife, Louise, which is a VERY bad idea, as her brother, Louis, is a violent racist.

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn | Stars: Kim Bodnia, Mads Mikkelsen, Rikke Louise Andersson, Liv Corfixen

Votes: 9,185

For a film with such an unappealing name as Bleeder, it is actually a pretty good one. Kim Bodnia plays himself, but does it very well and is quite enjoyable. Most impressive for me is Mads Mikkelsen whose range of characters and types is really starting to make me change my opinion of him from very good, if slightly one-dimensional, to someone who can pull off a wide variety of performances. The director, Winding Refn, is clearly in his element here. In some ways this reminded me of Drive. Having only seen Drive, Pusher & now Bleeder, I am slowly warming to his style. I'll reserve judgment for now, until I have watched some more of his stuff, however he might just be an acquired taste.

17. Election Night (1998)

Very good short film about a guy who forgets to vote and realises with 20 minutes until the booths close.

18. Mifune (1999)

57 Metascore

Director: Søren Kragh-Jacobsen | Stars: Iben Hjejle, Anders W. Berthelsen, Jesper Asholt, Emil Tarding

Votes: 8,052 | Gross: $0.59M

Had no expectations and perhaps because of that ended up liking the film. Great performances all-round and an interesting story.

19. Bænken (2000)

93 min | Drama

Kaj is an alcoholic living on the money the Danish state is providing him. Him and his friends spend their time drinking beer at a public bench. One day Kaj's life turns upside down when a young lady and her child moves in next to him.

Director: Per Fly | Stars: Jesper Christensen, Marius Sonne Janischefska, Stine Holm Joensen, Nicolaj Kopernikus

Votes: 4,428

Had no expectations of this film at all. I mean how interesting can a film be of watching a drunk guy on a bench. Well, as it turns out, very interesting. Jesper Christensen delivers an excellent performance as Kaj, a grumpy old man with plenty of demons. When a battered mother and her child show up in his neighbourhood, he is roped in to help and consequently has some tough choices to make. I particularly found the ending to be very good and in character.

20. Dykkerne (2000)

91 min | Adventure, Family, Sci-Fi

2 Danish teen brothers visit their grandpa on his old fishing boat and scuba dive. Some men hire an old minesweeper to find the sunk German sub U-461 from WW2 but the brothers find it. A lot of strange things start happening.

Director: Åke Sandgren | Stars: Robert Hansen, Ralf J. Hollander, Otto Brandenburg, Baard Owe

Votes: 742

This really is a family film. Although there are some thrilling moments, nothing really scary happens. Probably a PG-12 rating would be about right. Having said that, there is enough going on that even adults can enjoy the film as well, tho the target audience is probably young teens.

I found it to be ok, but nothing spectacular.

21. Flickering Lights (2000)

Not Rated | 109 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

47 Metascore

A gang of 4 Danish criminals are ordered by Færingen to steal a bag from a safe. When they see DKK4,000,000 in the bag, they keep it for themselves and head for Spain. They end up in a ruin of an old restaurant on Jutland and renovate it.

Director: Anders Thomas Jensen | Stars: Søren Pilmark, Ulrich Thomsen, Mads Mikkelsen, Nikolaj Lie Kaas

Votes: 24,213

Recommended by Aaron & Ronan Doyle. A gem of a movie. 4 criminals, tired of doing lots of small jobs, find themselves with a lot of cash after their latest job and decide to go on the run. While not a film that is a "laugh-a-minute", it consistently has enough going on to keep the viewer interested and you genuinely care about the 4 main characters. Highly recommended!

22. Italian for Beginners (2000)

R | 112 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

77 Metascore

Several lonely hearts in a semi-provincial suburb of a town in Denmark use a beginner's course in Italian as the platform to meet the romance of their lives.

Director: Lone Scherfig | Stars: Anders W. Berthelsen, Ann Eleonora Jørgensen, Anette Støvelbæk, Peter Gantzler

Votes: 13,854 | Gross: $4.45M

Great little film about a group of people attending an Italian class for beginners in Denmark. What could have been a piece of fluff in lesser hands turns out to be a simply delightful film. The director knows what she is doing and gets good performances out of everyone. You end up genuinely caring about this odd group of people.

23. Unit One (2000–2004)

75 min | Action, Crime, Drama

A mobile task force is dispatched across Denmark to help local police solve tough cases.

Stars: Charlotte Fich, Mads Mikkelsen, Lars Brygmann, Waage Sandø

24. Et rigtigt menneske (2001)

95 min | Drama

A 7-year-old girl's (Line Kruse) imaginary friend (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) comes to life, but adults misunderstand his kindness toward children.

Director: Åke Sandgren | Stars: Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Peter Mygind, Susan Olsen, Troels II Munk

Votes: 1,007

In my efforts to see more danish films, I blindly got 4 films from the library that were danish and this was one of them. There were no expectations, in fact the coverinfo made it look boring. So with some trepidation, I started watching it. The first 5 or so minutes were fairly boring, but then something happened and from that moment on I was hooked. A true gem of a movie, with Nicolai Lie Kaas doing an exceptional job as the lead character. Highly recommended!

25. Gamle mænd i nye biler (2002)

27. The Green Butchers (2003)

54 Metascore

Two Danish friends are tired of their employer and open their own butcher shop. An electrician accidentally dies in the freezer and he's sold as marinated chicken and business picks up. What happens when they run out of "chicken"?

Director: Anders Thomas Jensen | Stars: Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Mads Mikkelsen, Line Kruse, Ole Thestrup

Votes: 24,682 | Gross: $0.00M

For some reason I really didn't connect with this Danish film. It has its moments, but it seem dis-jolted and largely both uninteresting and unfunny. Really wish I could say differently, but I am unimpressed. That is not to say it is bad, just that it wasn't anywhere as good as I had hoped.

28. Regel nr. 1 (2003)

Not Rated | 87 min | Comedy

Director: Oliver Ussing | Stars: Susanne Juhász, Mira Wanting, Thomas Levin, Anders Valentinus Dam

Votes: 346

Two sisters meet up 4 years after one of them walked out of a kidney operation that would have benefited the other one. The more mousy one (who needed the kidney) finds her boyfriend in a compromising position with another woman and moves in with her sister.

The film centres around two things. Firstly, all men are pigs and not worthy and secondly, the sister-sister relationship. This is a chick-flick, however Susanne Juhasz' portrayal of the mousy sister really makes the film work. Mira Wanting also does a fair job of portraying the sister who craves control in her life.

Not everything works in this film, but the two leads are good enough to keep your attention and in between the male-bashing, there are some good lessons to be learned, for both sexes.

29. Kongekabale (2004)

Not Rated | 107 min | Drama, Thriller

Election for the Danish parliament is up and the main opposition party has a chance at winning and its leader at becoming the next prime minister. The leader is hospitalized and the scheming begins.

Director: Nikolaj Arcel | Stars: Anders W. Berthelsen, Søren Pilmark, Nastja Arcel, Nicolas Bro

Votes: 4,619

A great Danish political thriller. Suspenseful enough that it kept me gripped throughout, yet not overly convoluted, which means everyone can follow it, even if you know nothing of (Danish) politics.

30. We Are the Champions (2005)

Another footballfilm. This is more of a familyfilm than anything else. Lars Bom is good as the main character. Watchable, but not very memorable

31. Adam's Apples (2005)

R | 94 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

51 Metascore

A neo-Nazi sentenced to community service at a church clashes with the blindly devoted minister.

Director: Anders Thomas Jensen | Stars: Ulrich Thomsen, Mads Mikkelsen, Nicolas Bro, Paprika Steen

Votes: 54,645 | Gross: $0.00M

Not what I expected at all. Reckon it is best described as a black comedy. A Neonazi gets released to a church which is also a halfway-house. For the 12 weeks he is there, he has to have a goal or task. So he sarcastically says he will bake a cake. Keeping the appletree and the apples ready for picking and dealing with the minister of the church, not to mention 2 other guys, proves to be quite challenging.

While definitely not laugh-a-minute, the actors are on the top of their game and there are some scenes which are pure gems. Recommended for anyone who is a fan of either Danish films or black comedies.

32. The Big Day (2005)

95 min | Comedy, Romance

A wedding planer in Copenhagen ends falling for her most important client even though she's already engaged. At the same time her two gay employees also have their ups and downs in relationships. How will it end?

Director: Morten Arnfred | Stars: Louise Mieritz, Christian Tafdrup, Henrik Prip, Frank Thiel

Votes: 482

Another in the pile of Danish films I am slowly watching. This one deals about a wedding planner and her two gay friends trying to start up their wedding-planning business, while also dealing with matters of the heart and falling for someone unplanned.

Saw it primarily because the beautiful and talented Trine Dyrholm is in it, but it turns out she only has limited screen-time. It is a real chick-flick and sags a bit in the middle, but generally has enough going on to keep the interest.

33. Bag det stille ydre (2005)

Not Rated | 93 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

A young couple and their daughter move into an old house hanted by spirits.

Director: Martin Schmidt | Stars: Anne Birgitte Lind, Jakob Cedergren, Rebecca Løgstrup, Dejan Cukic

Votes: 537

Haunted house film. Fairly standard stuff with a few by-the-numbers scares.

34. Mørke (2005)

124 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

The psychological thriller "Murk" tells the story of Jacob, who is investigating into the circumstances surrounding his sister's death on her wedding night.

Director: Jannik Johansen | Stars: Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Nicolas Bro, Laura Drasbæk, Lisbet Lundquist

Votes: 4,072

Good psychological drama with the ever-watchable Nikolay Lie Kaas in the lead role. His sister commits suicide for the second time on her wedding night. Later, while searching through her personal effects, he finds a clue that suggests there might be more to what happened than meets the eye.

35. Prag (2006)

Not Rated | 92 min | Drama

Christoffer and Maja's trip to Prague to bring back Chistoffer's deceased father evolves into the story of a break-up. In the wake of the events that follow, secrets gradually emerge which threaten to destroy their marriage.

Director: Ole Christian Madsen | Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Stine Stengade, Borivoj Navrátil, Jana Plodková

Votes: 3,369

Fairly good drama about a couple who, after 14 years of marriage, have hit a rough patch, while they are in Prague to claim the dead body of the husband's estranged father. Mikkelsen and Stengade are good in their roles, however the film's pacing isn't great and there are some needless scenes there just to make the film long enough. A bit more taught editing or lack of sleep-inducing scenes and this could easily be a great film.

36. Råzone (2006)

37. After the Wedding (2006)

Director: Martin Barnewitz | Stars: Neel Rønholt, Mikkel Arndt, Julie R. Ølgaard, Mira Wanting

Votes: 1,649

Decentish horror film, which goes more for getting the mood right than out-and-out bloodshed.

41. Dig og mig (2008)

85 min | Drama

3 cancer stricken young women meet at a hospital and become friends. They look back at their lives.

Director: Christian E. Christiansen | Stars: Laura Christensen, Neel Rønholt, Julie R. Ølgaard, Pilou Asbæk

Directors: Thorbjørn Christoffersen, Craig Frank | Stars: Casper Christensen, Frank Hvam, Ali Kazim, Simon Jul Jørgensen

Votes: 3,144

A Danish film best described as a sort of cross between Galaxy Quest & Flash Gordon, but animated, and with Danish humour. Funny and well made, but ultimately not a film you will likely be watching more than once or twice in total.

44. ...Og det var Danmark (2008)

107 min | Documentary, Sport

Story about Danish national football (soccer) team, a traditional minnow until the mid-1980s when they improved dramatically and eventually went on to win the European championship in 1992.

Directors: Carsten Søsted, Mads Kamp Thulstrup | Stars: Frank Arnesen, Søren Busk, Preben Elkjær, Brian Laudrup

Votes: 369

Let me start off by saying I lived in Copenhagen in 1992 and I have never in my life witnessed anything like that summer. it was the first major football tournament I really got into, despite living in Amsterdam in 1988, when Holland won the Euros and being English (England had a very good World Cup in 1990 in Italy).

Now that obviously affects my feelings towards Danish football. I grew up with names like Schmeichel, the Laudrup brothers, Povlsen, Christofte & many more.

That being said, I do believe this documentary is a very good one. It documents Danish football, starting in 1979, when the Danes really started being professional in their approach and hired their first fulltime national manager (German Sepp Piontek), right up to that magical summer of 1992, where Denmark, who had failed to qualify, got called up to the Euros for political reasons because Yugoslavia was at war.

If you like football and a good documentary, I recommend this one strongly, even if you are not Danish. The DVD has English subtitles by the way. ;-)

45. Den du frygter (2008)

95 min | Drama, Thriller

A man signs up for a test trial of a new anti-depressant as a way to change his life. When the trial is called off, he continues taking the medication with violent results.

Director: Kristian Levring | Stars: Ulrich Thomsen, Paprika Steen, Emma Sehested Høeg, Lars Brygmann

Votes: 1,663

Excellent study of one man spending too much time on his own and the path that leads him down. Ulrich Thomsen is perfect in the lead role and Paprika Steen is also memorable as his wife. This is not a film where everything is spoonfed or wrapped up in a bow at the end. Instead it is a bit more "real". I only had one moment during the film I thought wasn't done as well as it could have been, but it is only something minor and I don't want to spoil it for anyone else.

46. Kandidaten (2008)

Good Danish film about a lawyer who wakes up one morning to find the girl he cheated on his fiancée with the night before is dead in his hotel room's bathroom. Kaas is good as he usually is, however I did guess who the bad guy was right at the beginning of the film. Still, it was suspenseful and enough was happening to enjoy the whole film and there were still some twists I didn't see coming.

47. Det som ingen ved (2008)

Votes: 1,419

Solid Danish thriller about a guy who gets involved in a possible cover-up. Good performances all-round, most notably from Berthelsen.

48. Flame & Citron (2008)

Not Rated | 130 min | Action, Drama, History

74 Metascore

A drama centered on two fighters in the Holger Danske World War II resistance group.

Director: Ole Christian Madsen | Stars: Thure Lindhardt, Mads Mikkelsen, Stine Stengade, Peter Mygind

Votes: 19,949 | Gross: $0.15M

A good WW II story based on true events. Two Danish freedom fighters who are executing Danish Nazis, find the waters getting murkier and the truth harder to be certain of, as they step up their executions to include prominent German Nazis in Denmark. A little long and consequently lags a bit in the middle, but a very strong beginning and end.

Martin is a headhunter who is hired to find a new director for a big Danish shipping company called Seiger (the similarities with Mærsk are there to see). The ailing head of the company doesn't think his son has the right stuff to take over. From there on in there is a power-struggle and the whole thing becomes a sort of political thriller. Although it is fairly well executed and I felt Lars Mikkelsen did a good job in the main role, it still left me with a somewhat unsatisfied feeling at the end. Not that it was bad, just that it didn't really grip me.

Surprisingly effective film starring 4 teenagers. The 4 teenagers are in school together and a series of occurences leads to a tragic situation. After that, it is all about the consequences involved. Very well acted by everyone, especially the 4 young actors in the lead roles.

A guy gets bored with his life, breaks up with his girlfriend of 10 years and quits his job. This leads him down a new path with mixed experiences. The story is a little disjointed and I feel the ending could have been done better, but overall it is a good film and it has some great scenes in it. The best of which come from his "inner dialogue"

Mystery thriller about a scriptwriter who finds some photos of Danish soldiers torturing people during a war. Builds suspense fairly well, and has a big twist at the end which will almost certainly put some people off it (myself included). Not the kind of film that wraps everything up in a neat bow at the end. That being said, Jens Albinus is good in the lead role.
