R | 91 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama
Three friends plan to pull off a simple robbery and go on the run.
Director: Wes Anderson | Stars: Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Ned Dowd, Shea Fowler
Votes: 83,508 | Gross: $0.56M
An amusing, low key debut for Wes Anderson and the Wilsons. While not quite Rushmore, occasional glimmers of brilliance hint at the greatness to come.
2. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
R | 119 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy
With a plan to exact revenge on a legendary shark that killed his partner, oceanographer Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) rallies a crew that includes his estranged wife, a journalist, and a man who may or may not be his son.
Director: Wes Anderson | Stars: Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Anjelica Huston, Cate Blanchett
Votes: 210,926 | Gross: $24.01M
Despite everyone's best efforts, Anderson's visually rich and extravagant production fails to mask unlikeable characters and awkward plotting.
3. The Meaning of Life (1983)
R | 107 min | Comedy, Musical
The comedy team takes a look at life in all of its stages in their own uniquely silly way.
Director: Terry Jones | Stars: John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones
Votes: 125,318 | Gross: $14.93M
Edgier than their previous outings, the python crew embrace the wild extremes of depravity with open arms, resulting in many of their funniest and most notorious creations.
4. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
PG-13 | 161 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy
The dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.
Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott
Votes: 705,186 | Gross: $258.37M
Peter Jackson's bloated Tolkien adaptation borders on fan-fiction as his new additions eclipse the original story. The slow and sullen trek through Middle Earth is mercifully peppered with kinetic action sequences and lush set-pieces.
5. House (1977)
Not Rated | 88 min | Comedy, Horror
A schoolgirl and six of her classmates travel to her aunt's country home, which turns out to be haunted.
Director: Nobuhiko Ôbayashi | Stars: Kimiko Ikegami, Miki Jinbo, Kumiko Ôba, Ai Matsubara
Votes: 33,718
Obayahshi's striking visuals and surreal effects take full priority as the already loose story descends into pure incomprehensibility. Light on scares perhaps, but a fun ride nonetheless.
6. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
PG | 114 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama
When both he and a colleague are about to lose their job, Walter takes action by embarking on an adventure more extraordinary than anything he ever imagined.
Director: Ben Stiller | Stars: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Jon Daly, Kathryn Hahn
Votes: 340,860 | Gross: $58.24M
Despite his heavy handed sentimentality and heavy pockets thanks to rampant product placement, Stiller's globetrotting Walter Mitty is popcorny fun. Critics be damned!
7. The Holy Mountain (1973)
16+ | 114 min | Adventure, Drama, Fantasy
In a corrupt, greed-fueled world, a powerful alchemist leads a messianic character and seven materialistic figures to the Holy Mountain, where they hope to achieve enlightenment.
Director: Alejandro Jodorowsky | Stars: Alejandro Jodorowsky, Horacio Salinas, Zamira Saunders, Juan Ferrara
Votes: 48,036 | Gross: $0.06M
A hypnotic collage of pop-art and ancient mysticism, Jodorowsky's hauntingly inventive creations balance beauty and repulsion, and are not easily forgotten.
8. The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988)
PG | 126 min | Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy
An account of Baron Munchausen's supposed travels and fantastical experiences across late 18th-century Europe with his band of misfits.
Director: Terry Gilliam | Stars: John Neville, Eric Idle, Sarah Polley, Oliver Reed
Votes: 56,859 | Gross: $8.08M
Whimsical, perhaps to a fault, Gilliam's Munchausen is a charming, breezy adventure bursting with creativity. Fun, but without the edge of Gilliam's earlier Time Bandits.
9. Fantastic Planet (1973)
PG | 72 min | Animation, Sci-Fi
On a faraway planet where blue giants rule, oppressed humanoids rebel against their machine-like leaders.
Director: René Laloux | Stars: Barry Bostwick, Jennifer Drake, Eric Baugin, Jean Topart
Votes: 36,820 | Gross: $0.19M
Creates a surreal, yet immersive and believable world, brought to life by the beautiful animation on display. The otherworldly designs recall Luigi Serafini's Codex Seraphinanus, published almost a decade later.
10. The Fisher King (1991)
R | 137 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy
A former radio DJ, suicidally despondent because of a terrible mistake he made, finds redemption in helping a deranged homeless man who was an unwitting victim of that mistake.
Director: Terry Gilliam | Stars: Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Adam Bryant, Paul Lombardi
Votes: 90,870 | Gross: $41.90M
A more grounded effort from Gilliam, The Fisher King strips back the effects laden excess of his previous work in favour of a sweet but typically offbeat tale of redemption. The brilliant cast share excellent chemistry, especially Bridges and Williams.
11. Jackie Brown (1997)
R | 154 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
A flight attendant with a criminal past gets nabbed by the ATF for smuggling. Under pressure to become an informant against the illegal arms dealer she works for, she must find a way to secure her future without getting killed.
Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda
Votes: 374,937 | Gross: $39.67M
A bit of a letdown, watchable, but more subdued than his other work. While carefully assembled, I found the story somewhat difficult to follow, and, excluding Grier and Forster, the cast unengaging. I don't think I'm the only one to say I prefer my Tarantino heavily stylised and served with enough blood to fill an Outlook Hotel elevator.
12. 12 Monkeys (1995)
R | 129 min | Mystery, Sci-Fi, Thriller
In a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet.
Director: Terry Gilliam | Stars: Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt, Joseph Melito
Votes: 646,638 | Gross: $57.14M
Despite its failure to live up to the dozen primates promised by the title, 12 Monkeys sees Gilliam doing what he does best. This mind bending time travel thriller may be a little too easy to get lost in, with its loose ends and uncertain ending, but Gilliam pulls it together with style and a great cast.
13. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
R | 118 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama
An oddball journalist and his psychopathic lawyer travel to Las Vegas for a series of psychedelic escapades.
Director: Terry Gilliam | Stars: Johnny Depp, Benicio Del Toro, Tobey Maguire, Michael Lee Gogin
Votes: 301,486 | Gross: $10.68M
Disorienting and sporadically engaging, it may not be the most pleasant film, but just as Hunter S Thompson would've wanted, it certainly leaves an impression. Gilliam's Fear and Loathing perfectly transplants you into the shoes of his drugged up protagonists, allowing you to experience the sleaze and slime of Las Vegas firsthand. Depp steals the show as the kooky Raoul Duke, whereas Del Toro's Dr Gonzo remains thoroughly unlikeable. While not always successful in it's balance of humour and unpleasantries, for the experience alone it's worth the trip.
14. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013)
PG-13 | 119 min | Comedy
With the 1970s behind him, Ron Burgundy, San Diego's former top-rated newsreader, returns to take New York City's first twenty-four-hour news channel by storm.
Director: Adam McKay | Stars: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell
Votes: 192,307 | Gross: $127.35M
A squarely hit and miss affair. Lacking the carefree flow of Ron Burgundy's previous adventure, The Legend Continues feels disjointed and contrived, but not without a few giggling fits and great one liners.
15. Lost in La Mancha (2002)
R | 89 min | Documentary
Terry Gilliam's doomed attempt to get his film, The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018), off the ground.
Directors: Keith Fulton, Louis Pepe | Stars: Terry Gilliam, Johnny Depp, Jeff Bridges, Tony Grisoni
Votes: 12,000 | Gross: $0.73M
An interesting look into the production of the greatest film very nearly made, anchored by Gilliam's larger than life personality and ambition. In many ways the inverse, and perfect companion to Chris Smith's "American Movie", which chronicles Borchardt and Schank's small triumph over their own incompetence, as opposed to the disaster that was Quixote, which failed despite the talent and best intentions of everyone involved.
16. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
R | 101 min | Comedy, Drama
A family determined to get their young daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant take a cross-country trip in their VW bus.
Directors: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris | Stars: Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Abigail Breslin
Votes: 518,030 | Gross: $59.89M
An offbeat road trip adventure capped with hilarious commentary on the bizarre world of child beauty pageants.
17. Blood Simple (1984)
R | 99 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller
The owner of a seedy small-town Texas bar discovers that one of his employees is having an affair with his wife. A chaotic chain of misunderstandings, lies, and mischief ensues after he devises a plot to have them murdered.
Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen | Stars: John Getz, Frances McDormand, Dan Hedaya, M. Emmet Walsh
Votes: 105,236 | Gross: $2.15M
An excellent debut for the Coens. Taut and eerie, Blood Simple establishes the brothers as masters of suspense.
18. The Dead Zone (1983)
R | 103 min | Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi
A man awakens from a coma to discover he has a psychic ability to foresee future events.
Director: David Cronenberg | Stars: Christopher Walken, Brooke Adams, Tom Skerritt, Herbert Lom
Votes: 77,307 | Gross: $20.77M
Slickly suspenseful with occasional splashes of Cronenberg's signature grisliness, The Dead Zone is a brilliantly paced paranormal thriller that creeps up on you as it begins to ramp up the stakes. With a strong cast, Walken shines in a rare leading role.
19. Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008)
PG-13 | 92 min | Comedy, Romance
Guinevere Pettigrew, a middle-aged London governess, finds herself unfairly dismissed from her job. An attempt to gain new employment catapults her into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse.
Director: Bharat Nalluri | Stars: Frances McDormand, Amy Adams, Ciarán Hinds, David Alexander
Votes: 29,735 | Gross: $12.29M
Slight period comedy, whooshes by without leaving much of an impression. Nonetheless lifted by committed performances from McDormand and Adams.
20. Raising Arizona (1987)
PG-13 | 94 min | Comedy, Crime
When a childless couple--an ex-con and an ex-cop--decide to help themselves to one of another family's quintuplets, their lives become more complicated than they anticipated.
Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter, Trey Wilson, John Goodman
Votes: 150,331 | Gross: $22.85M
Bidding a brief farewell to the austere thriller stylings of Blood Simple, Raising Arizona perfectly showcases the Coen's knack for genre jumping. Cage's opening monologue perfectly sets the tone and frantic pace of the film, which refuses to let up until the very end.
21. Dead Ringers (1988)
R | 116 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller
Twin gynecologists take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart, until their relationship begins to deteriorate over a woman.
Director: David Cronenberg | Stars: Jeremy Irons, Geneviève Bujold, Heidi von Palleske, Barbara Gordon
Votes: 53,574 | Gross: $9.13M
Cold and consistently unnerving, but too detached from its subjects to leave a real impact. Nonetheless, Jeremy Irons delivers two excellent and distinctly individual performances as identical twins Elliot and Beverley.
22. Barton Fink (1991)
R | 116 min | Comedy, Drama, Thriller
A renowned New York playwright is enticed to California to write for the movies and discovers the hellish truth of Hollywood.
Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen | Stars: John Turturro, John Goodman, Judy Davis, Michael Lerner
Votes: 128,947 | Gross: $6.15M
One of the Coens' stranger and least accessible films, masterfully atmospheric and hell bent on defying any sense of established genre convention, with quietly brilliant performances from Tuturro and Goodman. With a deceptively standard first half, the Coens' narrative twists are sure to infuriate some, but nonetheless result in one of the most enigmatic works to come out of Hollywood.
23. The Truman Show (1998)
PG | 103 min | Comedy, Drama
An insurance salesman discovers his whole life is actually a reality TV show.
Director: Peter Weir | Stars: Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich
Votes: 1,196,215 | Gross: $125.62M
Inventive and thought provoking, The Truman Show provides a critical look at reality TV from the days before reality TV. Powered by an excellent against type performance from Jim Carrey, and some serious worldbuilding from writer Andrew Niccol, and director Peter Weir, Truman is, perhaps more resonant now than when it was first released.
24. The Thing (1982)
R | 109 min | Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi
A research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.
Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David, Richard Masur
Votes: 466,551 | Gross: $13.78M
Carpenter's classic creature feature captures Antarctica's cold, unforgiving climate, creating the perfect backdrop for this horror whodunnit turned state of the art special effects show.

A stylish non sequitur.

Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen | Stars: Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finney, John Turturro, Marcia Gay Harden
Votes: 142,126 | Gross: $5.08M
Loaded with gangster lingo and period class, Miller's Crossing remains entertaining, despite a certain sense of aimlessness.
