1. Creed (II) (2015)

PG-13 | 133 min | Action, Drama, Sport

82 Metascore

The former World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Balboa serves as a trainer and mentor to Adonis Johnson, the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed.

Director: Ryan Coogler | Stars: Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad

Votes: 310,985 | Gross: $109.77M

Creed has as much heart as the original Rocky, and with the improved fight choreography, it soars above the Stallone led installments.

2. Rocky Balboa (2006)

PG | 102 min | Action, Drama, Sport

63 Metascore

Thirty years after the ring of the first bell, Rocky Balboa comes out of retirement and dons his gloves for his final fight against the reigning heavyweight champ Mason 'The Line' Dixon.

Director: Sylvester Stallone | Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Tarver, Milo Ventimiglia, Burt Young

Votes: 231,551 | Gross: $70.27M

Stallone's best acting in the series and likely the best in his career. This more mature version of the Italian Stallion is a very compelling character indeed.

3. Rocky (1976)

PG | 120 min | Drama, Sport

70 Metascore

A small-time Philadelphia boxer gets a supremely rare chance to fight the world heavyweight champion in a bout in which he strives to go the distance for his self-respect.

Director: John G. Avildsen | Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers

Votes: 628,750 | Gross: $117.24M

There's always something special about the first movie in a series like this, and with all its flaws, it still stands as one of the greatest sports movies of all time.

4. Rocky II (1979)

PG | 119 min | Drama, Sport

61 Metascore

Rocky struggles in family life after his bout with Apollo Creed, while the embarrassed champ insistently goads him to accept a challenge for a rematch.

Director: Sylvester Stallone | Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers

Votes: 231,355

Essentially the same movie as the original, but with the ending viewers were looking for; it sounds like fan service, but this was mandatory to set up the events that unfold in Rocky III & IV.

5. Rocky IV (1985)

PG | 91 min | Drama, Sport

40 Metascore

Rocky Balboa proudly holds the world heavyweight boxing championship, but a new challenger has stepped forward: Drago, a six-foot-four, 261-pound fighter who has the backing of the Soviet Union.

Director: Sylvester Stallone | Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers

Votes: 226,531 | Gross: $127.87M

Some complain that this one is too over the top; I definitely agree with Paulie's robot being annoying and more than a little exagerated. Once Rocky flies to Russia though, this is as good as it gets.

6. Rocky III (1982)

PG | 99 min | Drama, Sport

57 Metascore

Rocky faces the ultimate challenge from a powerful new contender, and must turn to a former rival to help regain his throne as the undisputed fighting champion.

Director: Sylvester Stallone | Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers

Votes: 211,319 | Gross: $125.05M

"I pity the fool!" who hasn't stuck around with Rocky to see his story through; number six on my list, but a solid movie all the same.

7. Rocky V (1990)

PG-13 | 104 min | Drama, Sport

55 Metascore

Reluctantly retired from fighting, Rocky takes charge of Mickey's gym and agrees to train a young protégé who's hungry for success.

Director: John G. Avildsen | Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Sage Stallone

Votes: 150,679 | Gross: $40.95M

A lot of people are content to write this one off, but in all honesty, I didn't have much of a problem with this one. Sure, the screenwriting is bumpy at times, and Tommy isn't really a character you can get attached to, but it was fun seeing Rocky on the outside of the ring for a change, and how about that street fight? Rocky still has it!
