My top 25 TV shows

by tbchico7 | created - 30 Jun 2017 | updated - 24 Aug 2019 | Public

My favorite television shows are those with imagination, great writing and memorable characters. I do like a good drama like Breaking Bad, but a good chunk of my favorite shows are animated or more stylized/lighthearted. There's a lot of TV I've missed out on that I intend to get to, in the meantime, these are the ones that are most special to me

1. Steins;Gate (2011–2015)

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Comedy, Drama

After discovering time travel, a university student and his colleagues must use their knowledge of it to stop an evil organization and their diabolical plans.

Stars: Mamoru Miyano, Asami Imai, Kana Hanazawa, Ashly Burch

Votes: 73,480

Untouchable. Steins Gate is not only my favorite show but my favorite piece of media ever. Nothing else has had me fighting back tears so many times, or had me laughing so hard. I've thought a lot about S;G since I first saw it, and whenever I do it never fails to put me in a better state of mind. While all the characters are remarkable, Okarin and Kurisu are my all time favorites, and I've never seen anything else that concluded in so satisfying a manner

It's about a self proclaimed 'Mad Scientist,' and his group of friends who accidentally create time travel with a phone hooked up to a microwave. Funnily enough I didn't even have interest in it at first. I merely watched it with my younger brother because we were bored and had to pass the time til a really good show turned up. If someone had told me it would not only be my favorite show, but my favorite, like, anything, I would have scoffed. Funny how things turn out

2. Cowboy Bebop (1998–1999)

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

The futuristic misadventures and tragedies of an easygoing bounty hunter and his partners.

Stars: Kôichi Yamadera, Unshô Ishizuka, Megumi Hayashibara, Steve Blum

Votes: 138,975

Cowboy Bebop is likely the most fun show ever. It's colorful, filled with awesome characters and insanely good music. At it's heart its the story of a group of unique individuals who are all running from something, who become an odd and lovable family as they travel together catching bounty-heads. It's also got a genius corgi, how many other shows can boast about that?

3. Firefly (2002–2003)

TV-14 | 45 min | Adventure, Drama, Sci-Fi

Five hundred years in the future, a renegade crew aboard a small spacecraft tries to survive as they travel the unknown parts of the galaxy and evade warring factions as well as authority agents out to get them.

Stars: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin

Votes: 281,776

Firefly only got 14 episodes but it more than left it's mark in the short time it aired. Like Bebop it's the story of a sort of rag tag crew of lovable people living together on a ship, with adventure seeming to be at every turn. Every actor does a splendid job, and the chemistry between the cast is second to none.

4. Fringe (2008–2013)

TV-14 | 46 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

An F.B.I. agent is forced to work with an institutionalized scientist and his son in order to rationalize a brewing storm of unexplained phenomena.

Stars: Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Jasika Nicole

Votes: 257,554

Fringe starts off pretty rocky. It takes a full season to really shine, but it was completely worth the wait. An FBI agent and two geniuses, father and son, investigate incredible sci fi and paranormal occurrences. It's main cast is flawless and features some of the most likable characters on TV. The premise isn't incredibly original, but it's delivery sure is.

5. Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005–2008)

TV-Y7-FV | 23 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

In a war-torn world of elemental powers, a young boy reawakens to undertake a dangerous mystic quest to fulfill his destiny as the Avatar, and bring peace to the world.

Stars: Dee Bradley Baker, Zach Tyler Eisen, Mae Whitman, Jack De Sena

Votes: 373,440

My favorite show growing up and it has a strong claim for Western animation's greatest achievement. Avatar is wondrous, with it's unique ideas, beautiful animation and impeccable cast/characters. Each season is better than the last, and it builds to one of the greatest finales ever

6. BoJack Horseman (2014–2020)

TV-MA | 25 min | Animation, Comedy, Drama

BoJack Horseman was the star of the hit television show "Horsin' Around" in the '80s and '90s, but now he's washed up, living in Hollywood, complaining about everything, and wearing colorful sweaters.

Stars: Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, Aaron Paul

Votes: 188,784

Easy to dismiss at first, but turns out to be one of the most well written shows of the century. Bojack will tear your heart out and stomp on it, but it's so good you just want more. Bojack himself is one of the most flawed and interesting characters on tv, and despite everything he's done, it's impossible not to root for him

7. True Detective (2014– )

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

Anthology series in which police investigations unearth the personal and professional secrets of those involved, both within and outside the law.

Stars: Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch

Votes: 656,805

I'm referring to season 1, which is one of the greatest things put to television. Both leads are tremendous, but McConaughey cements his legacy here, in one of the great performances of modern times. It's a dark, sinister mystery, and it pulls no punches. Brilliant writing, directing, editing, everything comes together gloriously

8. Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You (2009–2011)

TV-PG | 24 min | Animation, Comedy, Drama

Sawako's one wish in life is to make friends. That's a difficult proposition due to her resemblance to Sadako from The Ring. Her life starts to change after she befriends her classmate, Kazehaya, an easygoing guy who is nice even with her.

Stars: Mamiko Noto, Morgan Berry, Daisuke Namikawa, Yûko Sanpei

Votes: 5,303

Few things have made me happier than this lovely show. I never thought a high school romance anime would be my cup of tea but this defied all expectation. Features one of the most likable casts of characters ever and one of the best leads in anime. Though sad at times, From me to You is ultimately one of the most rewarding and delightful shows ever made, and it made me so happy I never wanted it to end

9. Mob Psycho 100 (2016–2022)

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Action, Comedy

A psychic middle school boy tries to live a normal life and keep his growing powers under control, even though he constantly gets into trouble.

Stars: Takahiro Sakurai, Setsuo Ito, Chris Niosi, Akio Ôtsuka

Votes: 45,003

Mob Psycho 100 has some of the most inventive animation in the medium, and every frame drips with personality. It's one of the funniest anime ever made, and one of the most badass as well. I loved every episode and can't wait for more

10. Rurouni Kenshin (1996–1998)

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

The adventures of a young wandering swordsman who stumbles upon a struggling martial arts school in Meiji era Japan.

Stars: Mayo Suzukaze, Dorothy Elias-Fahn, Richard Cansino, Rebecca Forstadt

Votes: 20,561

Seasons 1 and 3 are very good if not a bit forgettable, but the fun characters really keep it together. The middle season though, is one of the best in anime. A more focused arc, with a brilliant showing of a man's dark past, his battles behind and ahead, and a legendary adversary. The battles are some of the best ever, and the stakes couldn't be higher

11. Archer (2009–2023)

TV-MA | 22 min | Animation, Action, Comedy

Covert black ops and espionage take a back seat to zany personalities and relationships between secret agents and drones.

Stars: H. Jon Benjamin, Judy Greer, Amber Nash, Chris Parnell

Votes: 165,978

Archer gets a little rough later on, but the original seasons and a few of the later ones are some of the funniest TV ever. Archer himself is one of the best leads and at my peak love of the show I'd watch an entire season in a day. It's got a unique wit and charm, and endless references that make you beam a little when you get them

12. Gravity Falls (2012–2016)

TV-Y7 | 23 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

Twin siblings Dipper and Mabel Pines spend the summer at their great-uncle's tourist trap in the enigmatic Gravity Falls, Oregon.

Stars: Jason Ritter, Alex Hirsch, Kristen Schaal, Linda Cardellini

Votes: 135,569

Something of a cross between Rick and Morty and Twin Peaks, Gravity Falls is a delight. Easy to dismiss as a Disney Chanel cartoon, let me tell you it's something special. The lighthearted episodes are fun and often hilarious, but when a real threat emerges and the fate of the universe is at stake, Gravity Falls really delivers. The characters are insanely likable, and though its morals and themes aren't the most original, they are brought to great heights by mature writing that never insults the viewers intelligence

13. Sherlock (2010–2017)

TV-14 | 90 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

The quirky spin on Conan Doyle's iconic sleuth pitches him as a "high-functioning sociopath" in modern-day London. Assisting him in his investigations: Afghanistan War vet John Watson, who's introduced to Holmes by a mutual acquaintance.

Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Una Stubbs, Rupert Graves

Votes: 999,069

A modern take on one of literature's greatest heroes was ballsy, and the stylized direction and 21st century setting surely put a lot of people off. Sherlock quickly won viewers over with it's clever retellings of old stories and by the two excellent leads and their superb chemistry

14. Berserk (1997–1998)

TV-MA | 23 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

Guts, a wandering mercenary, joins the Band of the Hawk after being defeated in a duel by Griffith, the group's leader and founder. Together, they dominate every battle, but something menacing lurks in the shadows.

Stars: Marc Diraison, Nobutoshi Canna, Carrie Keranen, Kevin T. Collins

Votes: 53,223

Who would think a show about a badass man wielding a massive sword would be so thought provoking? It's been said many times but Guts (yup, that's his name) has one of the most interesting character arcs in all of anime. The show is both brutal and deeply human, and it explores its characters in ways you would never expect

15. Ash vs Evil Dead (2015–2018)

TV-MA | 30 min | Action, Comedy, Horror

Ash has spent the last thirty years avoiding responsibility, maturity, and the terrors of the Evil Dead until a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind and Ash becomes mankind's only hope.

Stars: Bruce Campbell, Ray Santiago, Dana DeLorenzo, Lucy Lawless

Votes: 79,977

As a lover of Bruce Campbell and classic Evil Dead this show was more than a worthy followup. It's funny, awesome, gross and it manages to balance the classic Evil Dead formula with some new ideas and an unexpectedly great cast of newcomers.

16. Arrested Development (2003–2019)

TV-14 | 22 min | Comedy

Level-headed son Michael Bluth takes over family affairs after his father is imprisoned. But the rest of his spoiled, dysfunctional family are making his job unbearable.

Stars: Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett

Votes: 324,292

One of the most rewatchable shows on this list. It's insanely funny and original, with one of the best casts ever assembled. You could argue endlessly who the funniest Bluth is, but who cares, they're all hilarious. Gob is definitely the best though

17. Bob's Burgers (2011– )

TV-14 | 22 min | Animation, Comedy

Bob Belcher runs a struggling burger shop with his wife and three children.

Stars: H. Jon Benjamin, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, John Roberts

Votes: 92,339

The best 'adult cartoon sitcom' out there, miles ahead of its contemporaries. Bob's Burgers is so incredibly consistent, delivering genuine laughs and excellent writing every episode. It's got a lovable cast and a lot of heart. No other comedy has been so good over so many years

18. Dexter (2006–2013)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

He's smart. He's lovable. He's Dexter Morgan, America's favorite serial killer, who spends his days solving crimes and nights committing them.

Stars: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, James Remar

Votes: 766,789

At it's best, Dexter made for one of the entertaining shows on television, with one of the most likable antiheroes at its helm. I liked later Dexter seasons more than most, but they were a clear step down from the fantastic first four. Also I will defend Deborah to the grave

19. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002–2005)

TV-MA | 24 min | Animation, Action, Crime

The futuristic adventures of a female cyborg counter intelligence agent and her support team.

Stars: Shirô Saitô, Atsuko Tanaka, Osamu Saka, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn

Votes: 20,950

A fantastic anime that is every bit as good as the legendary movie it's based off. A show that is sometimes hard to follow, but it's philosophy is seriously interesting, and the cast is aces

20. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003–2004)

TV-PG | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

When a failed alchemical ritual leaves brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric with severely damaged bodies, they begin searching for the one thing that can save them: the fabled philosopher's stone.

Stars: Vic Mignogna, Aaron Dismuke, Romi Park, Rie Kugimiya

Votes: 77,657

Absolutely brilliant until it trips up a little at the end. I mention my love for characters a lot on this page, but Alchemist's cast is one for the ages. The show itself is excellent, but it's carried by the unique and diverse set of characters, and luckily for us each of them is interesting, charismatic, memorable and mostly pretty likable in their own way

21. Twin Peaks (1990–1991)

TV-MA | 50 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

An idiosyncratic FBI agent investigates the murder of a young woman in the even more idiosyncratic town of Twin Peaks.

Stars: Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Ontkean, Mädchen Amick, Dana Ashbrook

Votes: 215,504

Lynch's transition to television couldn't have been more impressive. His show is remarkable, as long as he's involved. Dale Cooper is one of televisions greatest leads, and the first season is legitimately perfect. Unfortunately Lynch is less involved in the second season and it shows. All in all a great (and weird) time

22. Breaking Bad (2008–2013)

TV-MA | 45 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

A chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer turns to manufacturing and selling methamphetamine with a former student in order to secure his family's future.

Stars: Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Betsy Brandt

Votes: 2,137,692

Breaking Bad is something special. I don't like it quite as much as many, but I do respect the hell out of it. It hit heights that no other drama show has. It's slow and deliberate, and it's exceptional writing is upheld by several performances that I would call all time great. Walter White is surely one of the silver screens finest creations

23. Frisky Dingo (2006–2008)

TV-MA | 11 min | Animation, Comedy, Sci-Fi

A philandering billionaire playboy who moonlights as the superhero, Awesome X, faces against his greatest adversary, Killface, but finds balancing his business and superhero lives difficult.

Stars: Adam Reed, Eric Sims, Neal Holman, Stuart Culpepper

Votes: 7,650

The funniest show I've ever seen. It's ridiculous, completely random, and at times it feels like even the creators don't know what they're doing. It's stupid in the best way possible, with a few jokes that actually had me laughing uncontrollably and clutching my sides, praying that something in my head wouldn't burst

24. Mushi-Shi (2005–2014)

TV-14 | 25 min | Animation, Drama, Fantasy

Ginko is an expert travelling around to investigate a primeval life-form, the "Mushi," and helping people with Mushi-related supernatural problems.

Stars: Yûto Nakano, Travis Willingham, Kôjun Itô, Jennifer Seman

Votes: 14,600

One of the prettiest and most relaxing shows, Mushi-shi is about a magical medicine man healing people suffering from supernatural ailments. It can be incredibly sad, but also hopeful, and it's storytelling and adventurous spirit never fail

25. Trigun (1998)

TV-14 | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

Vash the Stampede is the most infamous outlaw on the planet Gunsmoke and with a 60 billion double dollar price on his head the most sought after.

Stars: Masaya Onosaka, Hiromi Tsuru, Satsuki Yukino, Johnny Yong Bosch

Votes: 24,193

Trigun is over-the-top from the first scene, but behind it's charm and goofiness, the show hides a dark backside, and a change of pace halfway through that few see coming. Vash the Stampede is one of anime's finest protagonists, and his story is one of surprising depth and sadness.
