A mountain climber becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive.

Director: Danny Boyle | Stars: James Franco, Amber Tamblyn, Kate Mara, Sean Bott

Votes: 401,268 | Gross: $18.34M

Aron Ralston was a keen adventurer who loved to venture out on hikes, go biking or mountaineering. 127 Hours tells the story of when Ralston did exactly this one day with his rucksack packed with some water and snacks, rope and camera and little else he ventured into Canyonlands National Park for a day out. It's here he encounters two female trekkers who are lost so he helps them showing them to an underground lake.

Departing ways Ralston delves deeper into the park, canyoning off the beaten track and then his day becomes a nightmare, when a loose boulder gives way and he falls down a narrow gap trapping his arm under a rock. With no obvious means of escape, Ralston tries to keep calm and remembering a cheap penknife uses it to try and chip away at the rock. Hours turn into days, water and food become scarce and the outlook isn't bright and everything begins to take it's toll on him and he starts remembering his life, family and loves as death, his only outcome draws nearer.

Of course, Ralston didn't die, insted from somewhere he found the strength, mental and physical to cut his trapped arm off, freeing him from his death and allowing him to escape and find help. Director Danny Boyle does a fine job bringing us into this world, which moves fast to begin with, as Ralston moves the the National Park crashing of his bike and encouraging his new female friends to drop into a unseen lake between two canyon walls. Boyle wastes little time in getting us to where the film's story ultimately lies and it's there that the film really starts.

James Franco plays Ralston and does so well, he seems to be quite a larakin, care free and unaware that the world has it's dangers. Even when first trapped he seems to be quite fine with it all, taking it in his (halted) stride. But as the days pass he changes becoming ever mindful that there appears to be only one outcome, the situation made worse that no one knows where he is. He begins to record farewell messages on his video cam aswell as log about what has happened and as the days pass, the toll becomes ever more visible on his face.

Despite it's frenetic pace to start with and split screen editing to highlight different timelines, once Ralston is trapped we the audience are too, aware of the confines of the space and limitation of movement Ralston is faced with with. Close up camera shots of the face bring a very personal and real perspective to it all. Of course most that see this film will know the outcome and most will also know that Boyle shows us the outcome and that it has caused some major reactions. I refer of course to the arm cutting scene. Earlier on in the situation, we get a tiny glimpse of the horror of the situation as Ralston tries to cut his arm, it's enough to make you squirm but when you realise that it's not the part of the film, the anticipation builds. When we do arrive at the crunch point, it is as squirm inducing as you can imagine with one particular part where he has to cut the nerve line making me recoil in horror even when I think of it today. It's not perhaps as bad as it sounds, as the scene is over and done with quickly and it's not as warts 'n' all as it could be, but certainly enough to make you realise quite what a remarkable thing Ralston put himself through.

The film is a very human story one that shows the determination of survival aswell as the way one handles a near death experience with the idea that memories play a big factor. We get to see Ralston''s life away from his predicament in snippets aswell as see into his mind as it struggles to cope with the situation by playing with fantasy of escape. All of this adds to a remarkable true story that plays out well that borders almost on documentary style and that is enhanced by a fine performance by James Franco, but that is let down by the fact that some techniques often confuse more than aid the story.

A woman assists her friend in arranging an illegal abortion in 1980s Romania.

Director: Cristian Mungiu | Stars: Anamaria Marinca, Laura Vasiliu, Vlad Ivanov, Alexandru Potocean

Votes: 63,283 | Gross: $1.19M

This is a bleak outlook from 1984 Romania, where abortions are not only illegal, but VERY illegal. Gabita is pregnant and with her friend Otilia, they plan an abortion, in the process encountering massive bureaucracy and horrible situations. These women endure alot, being forced to sleep with the man performing the termination, lying to loved ones and borrowing money in a time when life was obviously very tough. The actor playing Otilia is wonderful as she helps her friend but is left feeling used and betrayed. Director Mungiu plays with his audience, by suggesting that something terrible has happened, and then we see Gabita sitting in the restaurant seemingly as nothing has happened, all whilst Otilia has run around for her friend. One aspect that really impressed me was the recreation of 1984 Romania. It is vividly brought to life and is given a horrifically gloomy and miserable setting. Hopefully Romania has moved on from that.

30. 500 Days of Summer (2009)

PG-13 | 95 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

76 Metascore

After being dumped by the girl he believes to be his soulmate, hopeless romantic Tom Hansen reflects on their relationship to try and figure out where things went wrong and how he can win her back.

Director: Marc Webb | Stars: Zooey Deschanel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Geoffrey Arend, Chloë Grace Moretz

Votes: 557,669 | Gross: $32.39M

I didn't know what to expect from this, but I like Joseph Gordon-Levitt and it got some good reviews, so what the hell...

Well, I was pleasently surprised. It's not the best thing, but it does try and that's a good thing. JGL is very good in this, he makes a good leading man, but I struggled with Zooey Deschanel's character, she seemed just a little too kookie and perhaps the romantic in me wanted them to work out. The film looks good aswell, Los Angeles has never looked better, infact I thought it was perhaps Seattle. There are also some various techniques employed to make the film a little different: There is the drawing of the park with has the number counter, although the clacking noise used really grated my nerves. I liked the 'fantasy' sequences, the one where Tom dances his way to work was great. Also the scene where the picture changes to a drawing. Another technique used was a split screen to portray the real and fantasy events of when Tom sees Summer at a party after they have broken up. Potentially distracting, it worked well, but I did begin to think at that point that maybe the film makers were trying a little to hard to be 'indie'.

The ending for me was a particular let down, it just seemed too contrived and convenient, the fact that the woman's name was Autumn made me cringe. But in all this is a good Sunday sofa DVD, which has alot to enjoy, including some great music such as The Smiths.

How I have never seen this? As it started and I questioned Dolly Parton's acting skills, I thought oh dear..but by the time the woman have the fantasies of how to get back the boss I was laughing heartily. Dolly Parton cannot act, but hell, she looks incredible, but if anything, it's Lily Tomlin, who is just superb, that was the highlight of this film.

36. 12:08 East of Bucharest (2006)

Unrated | 89 min | Comedy, Drama

77 Metascore

A local talk show host organizes an alcoholic professor and a pensioner known for playing Santa Claus to decide whether there was ever a revolution in their town Vaslui.

Director: Corneliu Porumboiu | Stars: Mircea Andreescu, Teodor Corban, Ion Sapdaru, Mirela Cioaba

Votes: 8,120 | Gross: $0.09M

Really highlighted the bleakness of post communist Romania - is it really like that? Great cast and some very funny moments, most of which take place during the tv interview. The old man was wonderful: making his paper boats on live tv and getting the kids back with firecrackers. A sense of desperation and bleakness seems apparent still so long after the change of power. Highlight was the band playing at the tv studio. Loved the first song they did with the boy singing the latino song and they way it was shot and then the contrast with the camera behind whilst they played the traditional number with the tv host looking on approvingly. Great stuff.

Some segments work better than others, the French and US ones being my favourites. I love the format of the film and the fact that short film can convey so much. It also interesting to see the perspective of 9/11 events from different cultures, people and viewpoints.
