The movies that everyone secretly loves and won't admit it...Part 3 "Friday the 13th" Film Series

by TomConnors | created - 13 Mar 2015 | updated - 13 Mar 2015 | Public

I'm back again, and in the spirit of the holiday (Friday the 13th) I figured why not make a new list of one of horror cinema's most notorious film series, "Friday the 13th"...

1. Friday the 13th (1980)

R | 95 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

22 Metascore

A group of teenage camp counselors attempt to re-open an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past, but they are stalked by a mysterious, relentless killer.

Director: Sean S. Cunningham | Stars: Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Jeannine Taylor, Robbi Morgan

Votes: 157,499 | Gross: $39.75M

The original concept was "Halloween meets Psycho" in the woods. Using the same mold, and considering "Halloween" held so many roots in Alfred Hitchcock's classic, "Friday the 13th" should have been a mess, instead it is a pot-boiler with a twist and a formula that echoed throughout the decade. It's almost iconic that the first film in the series debuted with the new decade, because the series would go on to become synonymous with the 80's.

2. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

R | 87 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

26 Metascore

Five years after the events of the first film, a summer camp next to the infamous Camp Crystal Lake is preparing to open, but the legend of Jason is weighing heavy on the proceedings.

Director: Steve Miner | Stars: Betsy Palmer, Amy Steel, John Furey, Adrienne King

Votes: 77,788 | Gross: $21.72M

The obligatory sequel that would truly set the tone for the series from here on out, for the most part. We are introduced to prototype Jason, despite not wearing his signature hockey mask that he is best known for, the sack on his head is almost as, if not more jarring and freaky. The story itself, like all the films in the series, is no more or less than an excuse to put teenagers into vulnerable positions to find themselves at the end of Jason's fury.

3. Friday the 13th: Part 3 (1982)

R | 95 min | Horror, Thriller

30 Metascore

Jason Voorhees stalks a group of friends who have just arrived to spend the weekend at a cabin near Crystal Lake.

Director: Steve Miner | Stars: Dana Kimmell, Tracie Savage, Richard Brooker, Terry Ballard

Votes: 60,435 | Gross: $36.69M

Jason's back, and he's now donning the mask we all know and love, and this time it's in 3-D. Despite the fact that a decent version in 3-D has yet to be released, this is still among the better executed films, though most of the 3-D gags don't hold up so well in standard 2-D viewings.

4. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

R | 91 min | Horror, Thriller

33 Metascore

After being announced dead and taken to a morgue, Jason Voorhees spontaneously revives, escapes from the hospital, and stalks a group of friends renting a house in the countryside near Crystal Lake.

Director: Joseph Zito | Stars: Erich Anderson, Judie Aronson, Peter Barton, Kimberly Beck

Votes: 59,188 | Gross: $32.98M

In what was supposed to be the final chapter in the "Friday the 13th" saga, we are given one of the best in the series, both in story and effectiveness. Corey Feldman is introduced to us as Jason's cheif nemesis, Tommy Jarvis. The formula is working well in this mix of scares and some laughs, and an ending worthy of the name, though we all know it's not really the FINAL chapter...

5. Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)

R | 92 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

16 Metascore

Still haunted by his past, Tommy Jarvis, who, as a child, killed Jason Voorhees, is sent to a secluded halfway house in the countryside, where the killing of a young man triggers a brutal series of murders in the area.

Director: Danny Steinmann | Stars: Melanie Kinnaman, John Shepherd, Anthony Barrile, Suzanne Bateman

Votes: 43,927 | Gross: $21.93M

Corey Feldman only appears in a dream sequence cameo in the 5th installment, though his character, Tommy Jarvis, is still a main part of the story, though played by a different actor because this film takes place years after part 4, in a half-way house for troubled teens. Though not among the most popular of the films, it's usually at least given credit for trying something different, while at the same time taking it back to it's roots a tad with a twist ending.

6. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

R | 86 min | Horror, Thriller

30 Metascore

Tommy Jarvis exhumes Jason Voorhees to cremate his corpse, but inadvertently brings him back to life instead. The newly revived killer seeks revenge, and Tommy may be the only one who can stop him.

Director: Tom McLoughlin | Stars: Thom Mathews, Jennifer Cooke, David Kagen, Kerry Noonan

Votes: 51,243 | Gross: $19.47M

Jason lives once again, as the title promises, as the series nears it's peak before it bottoms out. A different person is playing him, yet Tommy Jarvis returns to Jason's old stomping grounds only to revive the long-dead killer. A fun romp through the forest, and a worthy entry that screams the 80's.

7. Friday the 13th: The New Blood (1988)

R | 88 min | Horror, Thriller

13 Metascore

Jason Voorhees is accidentally freed from his watery prison by a telekinetic teenager. Now, only she can stop him.

Director: John Carl Buechler | Stars: Terry Kiser, Jennifer Banko, John Otrin, Susan Blu

Votes: 42,374 | Gross: $19.17M

The last true good installment in the series pits Jason up against a "Carrie" like character, as she gives the zombie killer a run for his money. Fan favorite Kane Hodder makes his debut as Jason, his first of 4 turns as the infamous goalie.

8. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

R | 100 min | Adventure, Horror, Thriller

14 Metascore

Jason Voorhees is accidentally awakened from his watery grave and ends up stalking a ship full of graduating high-school students headed to Manhattan, New York.

Director: Rob Hedden | Stars: Jensen Daggett, Kane Hodder, Todd Caldecott, Tiffany Paulsen

Votes: 43,092 | Gross: $14.34M

Paramount's last go at bat in the series, before they would sell off Jason to New Line Cinema (only to retain the character again some time later in a complicated deal). Jason does take Manhattan, take forever to get there that is. The common complaint about this entry in the series, besides a lot of spooky ghost stuff not usually associated with the series, is the problem here. Jason spends most of his time on a boat with the smallest graduating class ever, even for a smaller town, and only about 15 minutes in New York. Has some fun moments, but over-all a miss.

9. Jason Goes to Hell (1993)

R | 87 min | Fantasy, Horror, Thriller

17 Metascore

Serial killer Jason Voorhees' supernatural origins are revealed.

Director: Adam Marcus | Stars: John D. LeMay, Kari Keegan, Kane Hodder, Steven Williams

Votes: 36,820 | Gross: $15.94M

This movie still makes me scratch my head over 20 years later. This movie is the most arrogant, idiotic, flagrant disregard for any film franchise ever. (Until the Leprechaun remake...I guess). Jason Goes To Hell attempts to give a new mythos and god knows what else, to the Friday the 13th series. It failed on so many levels other than the clever "Freddy vs Jason" tease.

10. Jason X (2001)

R | 92 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

25 Metascore

Jason Voorhees is cryogenically frozen at the beginning of the 21st century, and is discovered in the 25th century and taken to space. He gets thawed, and begins stalking and killing the crew of the spaceship that's transporting him.

Director: James Isaac | Stars: Kane Hodder, Lexa Doig, Jeff Geddis, David Cronenberg

Votes: 61,547 | Gross: $13.12M

Jason in space...what more is there really to say about this...except, for it's probably the best of any (insert your horror franchise here) goes to space movie out there...'nuff said.

11. Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

R | 97 min | Action, Horror

37 Metascore

Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees return to terrorize the teenagers of Elm Street. Only this time, they're out to get each other, too.

Director: Ronny Yu | Stars: Robert Englund, Ken Kirzinger, Kelly Rowland, Monica Keena

Votes: 127,310 | Gross: $82.62M

The movie that fans waited 2 decades to see, finally came to us with mixed results, but over-all brought an end to two franchises in at least a bombastic way. Sadly Kane Hodder did not reprise his role as Jason for the first and last time.

12. Friday the 13th (2009)

R | 97 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

34 Metascore

A group of young adults visit a boarded up campsite named Crystal Lake where they soon encounter the mysterious Jason Voorhees and his deadly intentions.

Director: Marcus Nispel | Stars: Jared Padalecki, Amanda Righetti, Derek Mears, Danielle Panabaker

Votes: 116,946 | Gross: $65.00M

A needless remake that crams most of the first film's story in the first few minutes of the film, and then tries to cram 3 more movies into the following hour and a half, missing all the things we really truly love about the series, giving us a plastic rip-off of a once well beloved, yet flawed series. Platinum Dunes takes a dump all over everything, and "Friday the 13th" wasn't able to avoid the mess in this instance.
