Ahem. The TV series that finally made me signed up to Netflix. Resistance is (always) futile.

*with vain attempt of not to hum along to 'Bella Ciao'*

Votes: 256,848

As someone who was actually named after the current queen's famous late daughter-in-law, there is always something about shows which are royal-related that always draw me in.

(Though spoilers, the 1982 royal wedding between Charles and Lady Diana was the actual reason, as according to my father.)

Votes: 1,088,654

I was actually only a 7-year-old when this first arrived at our local TV in 1994, one of the very first American TV series that I know of. Subconsciously I have judged every American production that I know of against this ever since.

But Netflix made me finally discover why this has always been worthy of the hype, when I even used had to study the popularity of the series back at university when I did my degree in mass communications.

Says something eh?

5. Peaky Blinders (2013–2022)

TV-MA | 60 min | Crime, Drama

A gangster family epic set in 1900s England, centering on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps, and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby.

Stars: Cillian Murphy, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Helen McCrory

Votes: 650,298

Kind of a latecomer to this, only when Netflix has the international rights to the BBC series.

But when even the former football (or soccer to some of you) coach of Arsenal in Unai Emery (who is actually Spanish himself) used to admit during his time at the club that he also watched this, that was for some reason enough to eventually get me on the bandwagon.

By the order of...the Peaky Blinders.

From what started out as Netflix's first foray into Spanish-language programming in Spain, to a historical drama series which originally started out as a group of women with different backgrounds getting to work at Spain's national telephone company as operators in the 1920s and the various challenges each of them face, to how events outside of the company will come to make them look at the world beyond where they work.

Stars: Paula Echevarría, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Manuela Velasco

Votes: 6,794

Or maybe it is me back when watching this on Netflix, the opening theme song is enough to make me look forward to each episode. But before the eventual happy ever after, there are plenty of obstacles along the way.

The spin-off to Velvet where a few years after the original series ended, the world of Velvet went from the main base in Madrid to Barcelona. But getting it together is not without its hitches, along with old and new faces and a younger generation working at the store. It also exposes the family problems of the wealthy Catalan financier investing into the Barcelona branch, and the unlikely link his wife has to one of the staff at Velvet.

9. Gran Hotel (2011–2013)

Stars: Adriana Ozores, Amaia Salamanca, Yon González, Eloy Azorín

Votes: 11,203

What was happening in Spain at the turn of the previous century, it is also being intertwined with the lives of those living and working at the hotel. But it all started out with someone was looking for his sister working there...until she disappeared without much of a trace.

That was when the mysteries of the hotel began to unravel itself, even if there are also the surprises and lighter moments when even the famed magician Harry Houdini and the young Agatha Christie (when she was still known as Clarissa Miller and a guest to one of the hotel's long-term occupants, and how investigating cases at the hotel with local detectives leading to inspiration for her novel which sounded close to her eventual first novel, 'The Mysterious Affair at Styles') also showed up at different times in the series.

But secrets constantly lurked at every corner, even close to the top of the hotel hierarchy. It is certainly to keep one on the toes to the end.

Votes: 179,148

If time travel is your thing, then hop onboard! But if romance is not up your street, then it is hard to follow this which originally came from the Outlander series of books from Diana Gabaldon, and the TV adaptation to the series has not ended as it stands (May 2020).

She broke the law for the boss she fell in love with. Now this naive girl has to pay the price.

Stars: Alba Flores, María Isabel Díaz Lago, Marta Aledo, Najwa Nimri

Votes: 25,894

Not to be confused with the original Netflix series 'Orange Is The New Black' which was originally being compared to before it was aired on Spanish television, even if that was originally the inspiration for this.

While the original Netflix series is more of a comedy, this is more of a thriller. Though like the original, it also started out as a young accounting assistant being sent to jail for accounting fraud.

13. The Last Czars (2019)

TV-MA | 45 min | Documentary, Drama, History

A Chronicled look at the fall of the Romanov dynasty in Russia.

Stars: Robert Jack, Susanna Herbert, Ben Cartwright, Oliver Dimsdale

Votes: 9,672

As someone who did 20th century history in secondary school (or high school to an extent for some), the last of the Romanov dynasty in Russia (which this is also based on) was what opened the chapter in my history textbook, and so there was actually a lot riding for me as I was watching it, because I did already know what happened in the end to the immediate members of the royal family.

But I also learned a few more things while watching this, of whatever remained of the Romanovs who did escaped.

14. American Crime Story (2016– )

TV-MA | 42 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

An anthology series centered around America's most notorious crimes and criminals.

Stars: Sarah Paulson, Annaleigh Ashford, Sterling K. Brown, Kenneth Choi

Votes: 98,967

From the dramatisation of the OJ Simpson trial, to the events leading up to the assassination of Gianni Versace, the real-life cases that used to grip the United States when it broke, and introducing to a new generation of what used to take place.

But that is not all, due to the potential of a new topic for a new series. Until then, watch this space.

15. Maradona in Mexico (2019)

The Dorados, Culiacan's local team, are at the bottom of the rankings when Maradona arrives, looking for a fresh start. The experts predict disaster.

Stars: Diego Maradona, Mark Lewis, Vanessa Nicole Hill, Dennis Kleinman

Votes: 1,223

Despite whatever one may say about Diego Maradona the football (or soccer) coach as compared to his playing days, his time in the Mexican second division (before now back in Argentina) was also fascinating to follow too.

16. Cathedral of the Sea (2018)

TV-MA | 55 min | Drama, History

In 14th-century Barcelona, a serf's determined climb to wealth and freedom incurs the disdain of the noble class and the suspicion of the Inquisition.

Stars: Susana G. Esteban, Jordi Aguilar, Aitor Luna, Susana Ballesteros

Votes: 5,283

The Cathedral of the Sea is a real cathedral which still stands today, but the television adaptation of the novel of the same title which inspired it is not in terms of the story of one of those who helped building it.

But it is also an insight into medieval Spain, especially in Catalonia. And how the world was such a different place as compared to now.

17. High Seas (2019–2020)

Votes: 537

Has to be said, the very first comedy series that I watched...which is entirely in Catalan. At least there are the English subtitles to help me get by.

19. If I Hadn't Met You (2018)

A man who loses his family in a tragic accident discovers that he can travel to alternate universes, compelling him to find a world in which his family can be saved.

Votes: 2,957

Like 'Bevinguts a la familia' (or 'Welcome to the Family'), this is also in Catalan, with the occasional English. The English dialogue will be able to put into context in the later part of the series.

20. Bobby Robson: More Than a Manager (2018)

Votes: 3,283

A documentary film which is unlike any other, especially for a generation of English football fans who remember his time at the England dugout especially during the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

His Barcelona days is also an honourable mention, during a time when even these days an English or British coach abroad is rare.

But what led to only a selected few countries/nations winning the ultimate prize in football (soccer)? Taking into context this was aired in 2018, the national teams featured might had changed for the better (or not) during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

As in Italy infamously not at that tournament, England had a surprise run all the way to semis which echoed their 1990 World Cup campaign, France winning it again for the second time in their history, Germany as the holders at the time infamously exited at the group stages.

But the stories featured is also like a history class each time, and every country/nation is unique in what made them stand out.

22. Les Bleus une autre histoire de France (2016 TV Movie)

104 min | Documentary, History, Sport

This documentary follows the French national team for 20 years, from 1996 to 2016. Successes and setbacks that mirrored the French Society.

Directors: David Dietz, Sonia Dauger, Pascal Blanchard

Votes: 814

The history of the French national football team, up till 2016 when this was aired.

Is France a footballing nation or not like its immediate neighbours elsewhere, and what united the country when it hosted and won the 1998 World Cup on home soil, and what drove it apart in the intervening years. The history of the French national team that has actually also more often that not been the story of immigration to France from the players that has represented the side over the years, from Raymond Kopa (Poland) to Michel Patini (Italy), Alain Giresse (part-Spanish through his mother), to the class of 1998 in Zinedine Zidane (Algeria), Thierry Henry (French Caribbean), Marcel Desaillly, Lilian Thuram, Patrick Vieira (Africa), and the list does not end there.

The history of the national side which is also being played out in the political backdrop of the day, due to what France as a country has since come to experience beyond the football pitch. For those interested in looking beyond the footballing history of the French national team, it is one to watch of how it fits into the wider French society and psyche as a whole.

A segment of Father Jorge Bergoglio's journey to papecy in a country torn apart by Argentine military dictator Jorge Rafael Videla.

TV-MA | 303 min | Documentary, Crime

Stars: Fernando García, Elías León Siminiani, Ramón Campos, Yolanda Laguna

Votes: 2,589

A look back at what became the kidnapping and murder case that shook Spain in the 90s over three teenage girls who never went to their intended destination and the eventual ensuing media circus that followed, eerily mirroring the OJ Simpson trial in that same decade.

And how even after all these years, only one person had been charged for the crimes. And the legacy that remains in how such crimes are covered and the grim reminder that it is not a stand-alone case of crimes against women.

27. Two Catalonias (2018)

TV-MA | 116 min | Documentary, History, News

A documentary that tackles the ideological conflicts surrounding the December 21 election in the country, to the push for sovereignty and subsequent parliamentary declaration of independence and the aftermath.

Votes: 798

For an understanding of how the Catalan independence question came to a head leading to the contested referendum back in 1 October 2017. The documentary might had ended with the aftermath of the regional election in Catalonia which was called in the same year it was released, but what happened in 2017 has definitely brought it to even international attention.

The Basque separatist group ETA has always carry a fearsome reputation even beyond the Spanish Basque Country, but there has always been those who are willing to risk in bringing about the peace to prevent any more unnecessary bloodshed.

A series of interviews in this documentary film of the people involved willing to do it, so that the future generations will not suffer (and first aired before the eventual dissolution of ETA the following year).

30. Broadchurch (2013–2017)

TV-MA | 1,143 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

The murder of a young boy in a small coastal town brings a media frenzy, which threatens to tear the community apart.

Stars: David Tennant, Olivia Colman, Jodie Whittaker, Andrew Buchan

Votes: 127,345

Olivia Colman was the original reason for me to watch this, until the subtle hints to Doctor Who showed up...starting with the creator of the series himself. Before Jodie Whittaker made history as the first female Doctor, she played the mother who had to learn to deal with the murder of her son in this fictional seaside town and how she eventually moved on from it in the subsequent two seasons after the opening season.

What made this unique from a number of crime drama series, it is how each season deals with a case, and not one case being dealt with in a single episode. After all, it also goes into how the fictional seaside town has been affected by it as well, where it also affected to those on the investigating side and how their lives may get entangled in it. How often than not the human factor is being considered as well?

For me personally, this series in hindsight also led me to an important discovery I never knew 15 years ago even as a Harry Potter fan myself, and it is whom Olivia Coleman acted alongside with as her working colleague in the three-parter series. It had to take watching this to finally hit me in the face after finishing the three-parter series originally from ITV back in March 2020 in making the connection to what happened in the film adaptation of 'Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire' and finally realising who was playing the film's biggest villain away from Lord Voldermort in Barty Crouch Jr. on screen that I first saw on the big screen as an 18-year-old back in 2005. I know.

31. November 13: Attack on Paris (2018)

55 min | Documentary, Crime

Documentary chronicling the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015.

Stars: François Hollande, Line, Jimmy, Anne Hidalgo

Votes: 3,743

In a series of interviews of those who survived and the authorities involved in dealing with the aftermath all the way up to the then-French president Francois Hollande who was also interviewed in this series, the terrorist attacks on the French capital back on 13 November 2015, and how it was played out outside Stade de France, on the streets of the French capital, and at the Bataclan where the tension was at its highest due to the hostages held there, who were originally there for a concert.

It is always a reminder of the horrors terrorism can evoke, but it is also always a reminder of the stories of hope of how those who survived are still coping.

32. Roberto Saviano: Writing Under Police Protection (2016 TV Movie)

44 min | Documentary

Great, funny and poignant bio/interview with the author of Gomorrah now under police protection. Pif the director & interviewer is both funny & enlightening.

Director: Pif | Star: Roberto Saviano

Votes: 163

The journalist who will always be famously known for exposing the crime syndicate in his native Naples in the book 'Gomorra' has since gone into hiding and having limited public appearances due to the real threats against him where he also needed police protection. And thus making it hard for people to meet up with him.

But another journalist decided to take the brave step in doing it, and asking how Roberto Saviano managed to get through all these while even despite his book is well-received abroad but having mixed reception at home.

33. Jessica Jones (2015–2019)

TV-MA | 56 min | Action, Crime, Drama

Following the tragic end of her brief superhero career, Jessica Jones tries to rebuild her life as a private investigator, dealing with cases involving people with remarkable abilities in New York City.

Stars: Krysten Ritter, Rachael Taylor, Eka Darville, Carrie-Anne Moss

Votes: 226,820

This originally came up as one of the recommendations on my Netflix account, but was originally hesitant on whether to watch until reading about how there were good reviews for the two leads which in hindsight came in the first season for Krysten Ritter (as the title character throughout the eventual three seasons) and David Tennant (especially in the first season as the creepy and sinister mind-controller Kilgrave, even if he also feature occasionally in the next two seasons). The final rating from my part came as a result of the accumulation of how I felt after watching the entire three seasons, but it would have been definitely slightly higher if it was just based on the first season alone.

*potential spoilers ahead*

In a way, the first season had set the standards. It was the season that Jessica Jones is a private investigator after what happened to her a year ago and moving on from when she thought she had allow her one-time partner Kilgrave to die in an accident...until it was not. She had thought that she was investigating the case of a missing college student after the Shlottmans came to her for help, until all the evidences surrounding Hope Shlottman (whom Jessica eventually tracked down) started to point back to Kilgrave. Jessica had PTSD after what happened to her the year before where she had been previously being controlled by him as well. She might had needed him alive to prove his existence to help make Hope's case that it is not a one-off, but he saw it differently.

After all it turns out, Jessica became the first to resist Kilgrave's mind-controlling abilities, and after she had left him to die a year ago, it was in hindsight the start of him devising means and ways for Jessica to come back into his life...leading to a declaration of love from him, and the various edge-of-your-seat moments that happens in just about almost every episode in the first season. That was until what happened in the final episode in the first season. What I can say is that as someone who in hindsight first remembered David Tennant in his pre-Doctor Who fame when he was Barty Crouch Jr. in the fourth Harry Potter film in The Goblet of Fire, the level of sinisterness in this series has actually upped the ante from when I first know him on the big screen as a Harry Potter fan myself remembering how his character as Barty back then was supposed to be in the fourth Harry Potter book which became close to how it was in the film adaptation, it was constantly giving me the heebie-jeebies just watching the first season alone...and that says something itself.

The second season was to be towards initially reluctantly from Jessica's part (but coming after the insistence from her adopted sister Trish Walker), investigating into the origins of her powers which came after an accident which she became the only survivor where the rest of her family died. Or so she thought, after eventually coming to find out that her mother Alisa has been alive all these while, but also having enhanced powers like her daughter, except that the side-effects is much stronger than Jessica's. Alisa's strengths would also become deadly, but in hindsight help to set up the stage for someone else to counter that.

In the third season, the person that Jessica would eventually come up against is the psycho serial killer Gregory Salinger, the person who nearly killed her. Though the person Salinger was originally targeting was for someone else who had been with Jessica. But this would be also the season where Jessica is severely tested of who she is all along, where it also gets personal as her adopted sister Trish turning to the other side and becoming the 'bad guy'.

The Marvel Netflix series also came to break ground in the second season where all the episodes were directed by women which became refreshing, and also came to be seen ahead of the times due to the various themes presented which later also associated with the #MeToo movement.

34. The Last Dance (2020)

TV-MA | 49 min | Documentary, Biography, History

Led by Michael Jordan, the 1990s Chicago Bulls establish themselves as one of the most notable dynasties in sports history.

Stars: Michael Jordan, Phil Jackson, Scottie Pippen, David Aldridge

Votes: 152,287

The docu-series on the Chicago Bulls dynasty of the 90s which was supposed to air in June during the NBA play-offs which had been pushed forward due to the lockdown coming as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and being released on ESPN and internationally through Netflix, it is also a look-back at the time when Michael Jordan came to be known for what he would be on the court, and everyone and anyone who has been associated with him, on and off the basketball court.

For seasoned basketball fans, this will be a trip down memory lane of how the sport was like especially back in the 90s. For a younger generation, this is a time to understand the sporting dynasty that the Chicago Bulls built with Michael Jordan at the heart of it. That is people like me who grew up with NBA highlights on TV with him in it and watching 'Space Jam' with Jordan being the biggest sporting superstar of my childhood in the 90s. It might had been seen by some as more of a celebration of Jordan's basketball career and less of his unsavoury moments, but it did also shone a light of his gambling, golfing...and when he took time out to play baseball.

And it is also a reminder that the Chicago Bulls has never reached the heights that they have been since their last title in 1998.

35. Senna (2010)

PG-13 | 106 min | Documentary, Biography, Sport

79 Metascore

A documentary on Brazilian Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna, who won the F1 world championship three times before his death at age 34.

Director: Asif Kapadia | Stars: Ayrton Senna, Reginaldo Leme, John Bisignano, Neyde Senna

Votes: 75,841 | Gross: $1.61M

Technically this is actually a re-watch on Netflix because this was once shown on pay-TV here. The details of what I remember then became hazy, and so this became a chance to remember once again of the Formula One career of the late Aryton Senna, and the impact he also made back in his home country of Brazil with what he achieved on the racing track.

36. Alias Grace (2017)

TV-MA | 45 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

Grace, an Irish immigrant in 19th-century Canada, is convicted of the murder of her employer. However, things take a different turn when a psychiatrist arrives to analyze her mental state.

Stars: Sarah Gadon, Edward Holcroft, Rebecca Liddiard, Zachary Levi

Votes: 37,838

The fact that this was adapted from the historical novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood (more known due to 'The Handmaid's Tale') and at the same time based on the real-life case of whether Grace Marks was involved in the murders at where she was working at the Kinnear residence, it did also made me tried to figure it out during the course of the series.

That is even if there are also characters whom are clearly fictional like in the novel itself, in terms of the likes of the psychiatrist Dr. Simon Jordan. And certain elements which are also fictional as well because the real-life Grace Marks took on another identity after being released and left for the United States and never heard from since, unlike how it ended in the final episode of the series.

37. Secrets of the Manor House (2012– )
Episode: Secrets of Highclere Castle (2013)

TV-PG | 55 min | Documentary

See how life was - and is - lived in Highclere Castle.

Director: Vicky Matthews | Stars: Samuel West, Paul Brooke-Taylor, Colin Edwards, Robert Hawker

Votes: 238

It has always been famously known as the setting for the 'Downton Abbey' TV series, featuring the lives of the Crawley family and their servants. But it is also a real house with a real family, occupied by the Earl of Carnarvon.

But before 'Downton Abbey' made Highclere Castle famous beyond Britain, the castle was last known for how the fifth Earl of Carnarvon played a part in the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun.

It is also an insight into how such castles have to be maintained in the modern times, as explained by the current Earl in terms of how it is also opened to the public at certain times to keep it going and relevant.
