J.J. Abrams' 2013 film "Star Trek Into Darkness" was a parallel universe retread of Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." In Abrams' movie, the central villain, Khan Noonien Singh, was played by Benedict Cumberbatch, while in Meyer's film, Khan was played by Ricardo Montalbán. Both films feature the death of Kirk and/or Spock, and both films feature the survivor yelling "Khaaaaan!" The plots of the films differ, however, as Khan remains the central villain of the 1982 film, while he was supplanted by a vengeful Admiral Marcus (Peter Weller) in "Into Darkness."
Both films also feature Dr. Carol Marcus, a paramour of Captain Kirk (Chris Pine in "Into Darkness" and William Shatner in "Wrath of Khan"). In "Star Trek Into Darkness," Dr. Marcus was played by Alice Eve, taking over for Bibi Besch in "Wrath of Khan." Because the characters in "Into Darkness" are...

The character of Dr. Carol Marcus (Bibi Besch) was introduced in Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Dr. Marcus had invented a revolutionary terraforming technology called the Genesis Wave which could be fired into a planet and rearrange the entire world's ecosystem to make it livable. In "Khan," the technology was still untested, and Dr. Marcus was searching for a life-free planet -- sans even scant microbes -- to terraform. With her was her bitter son David (Merritt Butrick) who expressed quite openly how much he hated the formalism and military underpinnings of Starfleet. He would rather carry out scientific experiments with his mother in peace.
It would eventually be revealed that Dr. Marcus was an old lover of Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) and that David was actually Kirk's long-lost son. "Star Trek II" was at least partially devoted to Kirk reconnecting with Dr. Marcus,...

Here's a fun piece of trivia: when Dr. Carol Marcus (Bibi Besch) proposes the Genesis Device in her proposal video in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," is it accompanied by an animated simulation showing a dead moon being magically terraformed within a matter of seconds. The animated simulation, rendered by Industrial Light and Magic, was the first instance of a fully rendered CGI sequence in a feature film. According to the October 1982 issue of American Cinematographer Magazine, the Genesis simulation was originally envisioned as a more traditionally realized sequence wherein a character turns a rock into a flower. Special effects supervisor Jim Veilleux felt that something more impressive was required to capture the scope of the Genesis Device's power, and the CGI sequence was developed instead.

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."
In the latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," "Subspace Rhapsody," the crew of the Enterprise falls under the influence of a mysterious psychic field that is activated by a broadcast of Cole Porter's "Anything Goes." The crew becomes unable to keep its emotions hidden, and individuals find themselves confessing their more passionate inner lives ... in song. "Subspace Rhapsody" is a full-blown musical.
As established in "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow," Lieutenant LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) has developed a powerful romantic attraction for James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). This was complicated for her, however, as the Kirk she met hailed from an alternate timeline that was ultimately erased (dating in "Star Trek" seems quite difficult). In LA'an's native timeline, however, Kirk is still alive, and she has to wrestle with the fact that she...

When Universal Pictures released the classic creature feature Tremors (watch it Here) back in 1990, they decided to market it with poster art that brings to mind the iconic poster for Universal’s 1975 release Jaws. But before they made that choice, they had hired famed artist Drew Struzan – whose work includes the posters for Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, and Star Wars films, among many others – come up with a couple poster ideas. Yesterday, Struzan took to social media to share a look at a couple of his unused Tremors poster concepts… and you can check them out in this embed:

In 1979, Paramount’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture hit theaters to a somewhat mixed reception from critics and audiences. Many had predicted that the film would be a big money loser because it had gone dramatically over-budget, making it one of the most expensive films ever made up to the point. In the end, the film eked out a profit. It did well enough that Paramount was willing to take another chance on the franchise. Still, their approach would be pretty different, drastically slashing the budget and hiring fewer A-listers behind the camera. But, to the surprise of all, this proved to be precisely the right move, with the resulting film, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, a smash-hit that relaunched the franchise as a legitimate big-screen property and introduced the adventures of Kirk, Spock and McCoy to a whole new generation.

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just arrived online, and in this one we’re looking back at one of my personal all-time favorite movies, the 1990 creature feature Tremors (watch it Here)! To find out what we had to say about Tremors, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Ron Underwood from a screenplay by Brent Maddock and S. S. Wilson (who also share story credit with Underwood), Tremors has the following synopsis: Handymen Val McKee and Earl Bassett are tired of their dull lives in the small desert town of Perfection, Nevada. But just as the two try to skip town, they happen upon a series of mysterious deaths and a concerned seismologist studying unnatural readings below the ground. With the help of an eccentric couple, the group fights for survival against giant, worm-like monsters hungry for human flesh.

When a story is part of a long-running series, it's harder to appreciate its ending. Doubly so for a film like "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," which innately does not stand on its own. It's a sequel, but not so much to the first film as to the TV series episode "Space Seed." Said episode depicted the Enterprise discovering the ancient ship "SS Botany Bay" adrift in space. Aboard is Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban), a genetically enhanced tyrant from Earth's past. After failing to seize the Enterprise, Khan and his crew are exiled to Ceti Alpha V, an uncivilized, out-of-the-way planet: "It's better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven."
"The Wrath of Khan" is best experienced if you're familiar with its characters' backgrounds. Likewise, its own sequel, "The Search for Spock," is centered around undoing the ending of "Khan," where Spock (Leonard Nimoy) sacrifices himself to save his friends.

Actress Kate Mulgrew has had a long and storied career. Although perhaps best recognized as Captain Janeway on "Star Trek: Voyager" or Red on "Orange is the New Black," Mulgrew's TV career goes back to the 1970s when she appeared in 409 episodes of the soap opera "Ryan's Hope." But Mulgrew landed her first starring role in 1979 -- when she was only 24 -- playing the title character on the short-lived detective spinoff series "Mrs. Columbo."
To explain: "Columbo" was a popular detective series that first began regularly airing in 1971. "Columbo" starred Peter Falk as the title character, a police lieutenant whose first name is never officially spoken (although fans will be able to tell you that it's Frank). The gimmick of the series was that audiences were allowed to watch the perpetrators commit their crime right in a given episode's opening act. Columbo wouldn't be called in to investigate until later in said episode.

This 1990 monster romp still feels bright, smart & fresh, a mix of light comedy and old-fashioned scares. The entire show is one long battle against smelly burrowing beasts called ‘Graboids.’ Desert handymen Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward must work hard to avoid taking their place in the Graboid Food Chain. Ambitious it ain’t, but it delivers what monster fans want — gross-out thrills, excellent effects and solid laughs. Arrow’s 4K Ultra HD disc is as sharp as a tack, and a second Blu-ray disc contains an unprecedented volume of featurettes, interviews and production documentation.

A hundred million viewers tuned in to ABC back in ’83 to find out if the world would end with a bang or a whimper. Edward Hume and Nicholas Meyer’s daring docudrama reacquainted Americans with their status as hostages in a global game of nuclear roulette. Gruesome nuclear annihilation visuals complement fine performances led by Jason Robards. The tense, thoughtful show is presented in separate TV and theatrical versions.

The horror landscape was changing by 1982. People were tiring of slashers; even the Halloween franchise decided to take a left (some would say wrong) turn away from Shatner masks and sharpened knives, and used the brand name to explore the holiday itself in the perpetually under-appreciated Season of The Witch. The genre seemed to be turning towards monsters, from large scale dread fests such as John Carpenter's The Thing to more intimate fare like Frank Henenlotter's Basket Case. The horror films of 1982 displayed a refreshing variety of ways to make audiences jump, squirm, gasp, smile, and when the occasion arose, vomit. The Beast Within giddily checks all the boxes.
Released in February by United Artists, the film took in a total of 7.7 million at the box office. Those were not great numbers, and the reviews were worse. Mainstream critics in general have never been kind to horror; almost...

The Beast Within is a strange movie, you spend a lot of the time thinking it’s a strange werewolf film and the rest wondering just what the hell the beast is. The fact is though if you take your time and watch it you realise that the so-called Beast is unique, by listening to the commentary and watching the documentary included in this release you realise that the creature is in fact a cicada. I know, I had to look up what it was too.
The Beast Within starts with newlyweds Eli and Caroline MacCleary (Ronny Cox and Bibi Besch) enjoying their honeymoon until their car breaks down on a cold dark country road.

When I was a kid, there were two movies that terrified me as a kid. This wasn’t the creeping dread I felt when I watched Night of the Living Dead or The Twilight Zone. No, this was outright fear, the kind that sends you under the covers, sleeping in a sheen of sweat with the lights on. And maybe it sounds silly but as someone with a highly overactive imagination who lived in the woods, I don’t find it silly at the time. Scream Factory, ever busy preserving horror’s cinematic legacy, recently released another pair of cult classics on Blu-ray, The Beast Within and Crawlspace. Today, we have another double review taking a look back at these two often overlooked genre films.
The Beast Within: The Beast Within is the first theatrical screenplay by now genre vet, Tom Holland (Fright Night, Child’s Play). It follows a sickly 17-year-old named Michael MacCleary (Paul Clemens), who, as it turns out, has the misfortune of being the offspring of a violent encounter between a murderous swamp beast and his mother (Bibi Besch). And as Michael begins awkwardly transitioning into a man on the eve of his 18th birthday, he’s also forced to deal with the terrifying evil growing inside that he must overcome. Because, if he doesn’t face his true nature, Michael may forever be lost to his swamp beast lurking...

The latest trailer for 'Star Trek: Into Darkness' has been released, showing Benedict Cumberbatch slithering around in his villainy glory and Alice Eve in her underwear.
Eve is playing scientist Dr. Carol Marcus, a role that was originally played by the late Bibi Besch in 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan' in 1982.
Check out pictures of both actresses as the molecular biologist for Starfleet, below. It seems for Eve's role the character has been sexed-up. As if 'Star Trek' fans needed any more incentive to head to the cinema for this upcoming sequel to to 2009's 'Star Trek'...
In the original timeline, Marcus and Captain Kirk fell in love and had a son named David. From the 'Into Darkness' trailer it’s very likely that we will see the beginnings of their relationship played out by Alice Eve’s Marcus and Chris Pine’s Kirk.

Yesterday, we posted about a Star Trek photo that finally revealed the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's character in Star Trek into Darkness. Today, thanks for ComingSoon.net, we can shed some light onto Alice Eve's character in J.J. Abrams' sequel. While talking to some of the talent from the highly anticipated sequel, the site revealed that Eve's character is **Spoiler Alert** Carol Marcus. The character was portrayed by Bibi Besch in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and was a Federation scientist whose work led to the top-secret "Project Genesis." She had a relationship with James T. Kirk and became the mother to his son, David. The couple ultimately decided that it was best for her to raise the boy alone. We'll have to wait...

Slowly, but surely, the mystery of "Star Trek Into Darkness" continues to unravel this week. We're just a few days away from getting access to the film's first nine minutes, set to set to screen before "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in select IMAX theaters this Friday. And today, we've not only gotten an official image from the film to share with you, but also major character news— one, in particular, involving a familiar face returning to the U.S.S. Enterprise.
"Who is John Harrison?" is the question most of us are asking this morning, in light of the first official movie still released by Paramount Pictures. The studio unveiled an image of Benedict Cumberbatch's character standing in what appears to be a holding area in the Enterprise, with Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) on the other side of the glass.

Some of the tightly kept secrets of sci-fi sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness" -- including the name of the character played by Alice Eve -- are starting to leak out as the film ramps up its publicity in advance of next year's May 17 release date.
First, we discovered that Benedict Cumberbatch's mysterious villain is apparently named "John Harrison" -- a name that means nothing to the "Trek" faithful.
Now, Coming Soon is reporting that Eve's character is called Carol Marcus, and that's a name that means a lot. In "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," Marcus was a scientist and one of Captain Kirk's lovers. Not only that, but she gave birth to his son, David. Actress Bibi Besch played the role in "Khan."
As those who saw director J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot "Star Trek" know, the new series of films is unfolding in an alternate timeline from the original series.

So who in the hell is Benedict Cumberbatch's villain in "Star Trek Into Darkness" anyway?
All signs continue pointing to Khan and/or Gary Mitchell as it has been revealed that Alice Eve's role in the film will be that of Carol Marcus.
Bibi Besch played the role in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," a Federation scientist who had previously had a relationship with James T. Kirk and became mother to his son, David.
A recent preview of nine minutes of footage from the movie for select press included many of the scenes from the recent 'Announcement Trailer' including the scenes within a volcano, and the Enterprise hiding out at the bottom of an ocean on a planet covered in red flora.
The caption of recently released photo, seen below, says Cumberbatch's character is named "John Harrison" but why do I doubt it? Also interesting is...

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

'Variations' on a ThemeColin Hanks and Samantha Mathis on turning points, Jane Fonda, and famous parentsBy Simi HorwitzColin Hanks and Samantha Mathis admit that the chance to appear on a Broadway stage with Jane Fonda was a major draw. So was performing in a work written and directed by Moisés Kaufman (Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde). From the outset they knew 33 Variations would be a high-profile production and scrutiny would be intense — especially for Hanks, who is making his Broadway debut and whose father is Tom Hanks. Mathis also hails from an industry family. Her late mother is the well-known television actor Bibi Besch, and her grandmother Gusti Huber starred in the original Broadway productions of The Diary of Anne Frank and Dial M for Murder. Hanks and Mathis take their family backgrounds in stride. At least that's how they come off when they talk about their famous parents — the advantages,...
