The Garfield Movie has arrived in theaters ahead of Memorial Day to kick off the summer fun alongside Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The animated feature film stars the titular orange tabby cat in a coming-of-age story based on Jim Davis’ iconic cartoon strips and an adapted script from David Reunolds (Finding Nemo) based on an earlier draft from Paul Kaplan & Mark Torgove. Mark Dindal (Chicken Little) directs the creature feature.
With Chris Pratt bringing Garfield to life and Samuel L. Jackson voicing his streetwise and long-list father Vic, the film boasts quite an ensemble of voice actors that further contribute to Garfield’s adventure. Ted Lasso alumni Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham lend their familiar vocals to the movie as do Saturday Night Live alumni Bowen Yang and Cecily Strong.

Updated with VOD release details. Exclusive: The American Psychiatric Association urges “ethical practitioners” to “refrain from attempts to change individuals’ sexual orientation” and it supports legislation that would ban “reparative” or conversion therapies that purport to be able to change someone from gay to straight.

Into this contested space enters the documentary Conversion, directed by Zach Meiners. Gravitas Ventures today announced it is acquiring U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to the film which has won awards at Film Invasion Los Angeles and the Portland Film Festival. According to “V” creator, director Kenny Johnson, after years of development, the reptilian-alien feature "V The Movie", inspired by the novel, "It Can't Happen Here" by Sinclair Lewis, is back on track with a new set of production partners:
"We are delighted to bring the timeless – and timely – story of resistance against tyranny into the 21st Century", said Johnson, "'V' will be the first of a cinematic trilogy which will tell the full epic tale in the manner I always envisioned".
"V", a two-part miniseries first aired in 1983, starring Marc Singer ("L.A.P.D.: To Protect and to Serve"), introducing the 'Visitors', who slowly gain domination over Earth:

There is a Chuck Norris joke that says, “Chuck Norris doesn’t sleep. He waits.” Well, Norris is no longer waiting. The Karate champion-turned-action star-turned-meme would make his last outing in a bonafide starring role in 2005’s The Cutter. He would since make appearances in tongue-in-cheek cameos capitalizing on his meme fame. Even his brief appearance in 2012’s The Expendables 2 would feature him making a Chuck Norris joke. At 83 years old, it’s not a bad way to continue a career in entertainment. However, Norris is not quite ready to hang up his action fatigues.
Deadline now reports that Chuck Norris is set to make a triumphant return in an action and sci-fi film titled Agent Recon. The film has been completed from Quiver Distribution, and the American Film Market is underway with film sales, which will include this film from Millennium Media. The military action film is also...

When someone says “There can be only one” what immediately pops into your head? For just about everyone it will be the movie Highlander. That’s how ingrained into pop culture the franchise has become. It’s impressive considering that the original film was actually a massive flop. Yep, the first film died at the box office and seemed destined to fall into obscurity. But just like the immortals in the film, it would rise from the dead and live on. The path to the first film wasn’t without its own pitfalls and near-death experiences. Let’s find out what happened to the 1986 film Highlander here on Wtf Happened To This Movie.

Back in the 1980s, sword and sorcery films seemed to be a go-to genre. Roger Corman himself made a handful of them as all you needed was some open spaces, a strapping hero in a leather loincloth, and preferably some buxom beauties who were in some sort of trouble, probably from some sort of evil wizard. One person who saw a great opportunity to make a fantasy epic was probably not the first one to come to mind.
After making a couple of family-friendly films, Don Coscarelli burst onto the scene with his horror film Phantasm. This fever dream of a film caught the imagination of audiences everywhere as the Tall Man began to haunt their dreams. More importantly, film executives were paying attention to how well the film had done. Coscarelli now could line up his next film. He wanted to create a fantasy film about a...

One reason that "Batman: The Animated Series" was and remains so beloved was how it embraced case-of-the-week storytelling. This was perfect for showcasing all the different corners and characters that make up the wild world of Gotham City. Such a large cast of characters meant that the series brought in a lot of actors; voice director Andrea Romano sought actors of all stripes for parts big and small. On the Popcorn & Shield podcast, the late Kevin Conroy (the voice of Batman) described the casting process as thus:
"They were really looking for actors, rather than just voice people. They cast a really wide net. So there were TV people, film people, stage people. Every week going in it was like going to summer camp, the people I got to work with."
Series co-creator Bruce Timm, also being interviewed, agreed with Conroy's sentiment. "Every week there was always some special, you know,...

Next month’s Criterion Channel selection is here, and as 2021 winds down further cements their status as our single greatest streaming service. Off the top I took note of their eight-film Jia Zhangke retro as well as the streaming premieres of Center Stage and Malni. And, yes, Margaret has been on HBO Max for a while, but we can hope Criterion Channel’s addition—as part of the 63(!)-film “New York Stories”—opens doors to a more deserving home-video treatment.
Aki Kaurismäki’s Finland Trilogy, Bruno Dumont’s Joan of Arc duology, and Criterion’s editions of Irma Vep and Flowers of Shanghai also mark major inclusions—just a few years ago the thought of Hou’s masterpiece streaming in HD was absurd.
I could implore you not to sleep on The Hottest August and Point Blank and Variety and In the Cut or, look, so many Ernst Lubitsch movies,...

By all accounts, Jennie Logan (Lindsay Wagner) has it all – beauty, intelligence, a loving husband (Alan Feinstein) named Michael, and a good friend in whom she confides (Constance McCashin). While they do not have children, Jennie and Michael seem to be unperturbed by the lack of tiny bare feet on the hardwood floors – there is plenty of time for all of that. Or is there? Looks can be deceiving and it is not long before we discover that this seemingly “perfect couple” have their own demons to wrestle with.
Guided on a tour of the sprawling Victorian manse prior to their eventual purchase by a matter-of-fact realtor (Pat Corley) who off-handedly remarks that the unfinished attic is unworthy of even the most cursory glance, Jennie feels drawn to it, though she cannot fathom why. Once upon a time, when there were just three major networks, the schedules would be filled with glossy, interesting, high-concept miniseries, usually aired during the vital November, February, and May sweeps periods when the ratings were used to set advertising rates. This is what gave us great concepts like ABC’s Roots or, in 1983, V.
Metro subways and bus stations were plastered that spring with red-suited people, wearing sunglasses and big smiles, wrapping their arms around ordinary folk and we were assured: “The Visitors are our Friends”. A few weeks later, they were replaced with replicas but now a spray-painted V covered them and we got a hint of the Visitors’ true, reptilian nature.
The V miniseries, wonderfully written and directed by Ken Johnson (he of Incredible Hulk fame) was a taut two-night affair that presented the aliens coming to Earth and befriending us before their true intentions were revealed and a resistance movement began.

Desilu Studios, the home of "Star Trek" and "The Untouchables" has confirmed it will produce the science fiction reptilian-alien feature "V The Movie", as the first in a big-budget 3D SFX trilogy, written and directed by "V" creator Kenneth Johnson, inspired by author Sinclair Lewis' anti-fascist novel "It Can't Happen Here":
"We are delighted to team up with Desilu to bring the timeless – and timely – story of resistance against tyranny into the 21st Century", said Johnson, "'V' will be the first of a cinematic trilogy which will tell the full epic tale in the manner I always envisioned".
"V", a two-part miniseries first aired in 1983, starring Marc Singer ("L.A.P.D.: To Protect and to Serve"), introducing the 'Visitors', who slowly gain domination over Earth:
"...a race of aliens arrive on Earth in a fleet of 50 huge, saucer-shaped motherships, which hover over major cities across the world.

‘The Beastmaster’ is a sword and sorcery film that was released in 1982. Don Coscarelli directed the film and also co-wrote it with Paul Pepperman. It is based on a 1959 novel called ‘The Beast Master’ by Andre Norton’. The movie starred Marc Singer, Rip Torn, Tanya Roberts, and John Amos. It is about a witch stealing a baby from the womb of his mother and when the child, Dar, grows he can telepathically communicate with animals. He vows revenge on beasts who destroyed his village under the orders of a sorcerer called Maax. It is now 35 years since

Though he was just 25 years old when Phantasm hit theaters, many don't know that the cult 1979 horror film was actually director Don Coscarelli's third movie. In fact, at the age of 19, he became the youngest director ever to have a film distributed by a major studio (a statistic that's often been alleged but which I cannot independently confirm) when Universal acquired his teen drama Jim, the World's Greatest for distribution. That film, which was financed by Coscarelli's father -- who put up the money for production after having "a good year in the stock market," in Coscarelli's words -- landed the teenage filmmaker and his co-director Craig Mitchell an office on the studio's lot to finish the movie. It was an unusually auspicious Big Hollywood start to a career that ended up taking a less-mainstream turn as the years went on. "I've been working my way downward ever since,...

We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?
Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.
But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

The Beastmaster himself is coming to The CW’s Arrow...
It’s fair to say that the mid-season finale of Arrow hit a few of us for six. We won’t go into spoilers here, though. Our review of the episode is here.
As season three of Arrow progresses, we’ll be getting another new addition to the cast.
Marc Singer, star of 1982’s The Beastmaster, will play a pivotal role in the flashback strand of Arrow season three. We can assume he’ll be based in Hong Kong then. Singer, who also played the lead in the 80s science-fiction franchise V, will play General Matthew Shrieve.
In the comics, Shrieve is the leader of a horror-esque team full of werewolfs, vampires and other iconic characters. Sort of a master of beasts character, then.

Spotted those shiny boxed horror movies in your local Tesco? Craig's watched them. All of them.
There's a certain type of horror film fan who enjoys a challenge. Perhaps they like a sense of adventure with their films. Perhaps there's also an element of gambling. It starts small. Low odds. For example, they might buy a boxset of the Alien Quadrilogy. Four seemingly reasonable films but there's an element of both chance and endurance. Can you sit through nearly eight hours of Alien films? And, if you can, how many of them will you like? Eventually not only does the thrill become harder to chase as the product's effect gets weaker (anyone who's bought Hellraiser boxsets will know the rules of diminishing returns) but there are only a finite number of franchises in the world and the hardened need to find new, strange ways of getting their kicks.
So bear with me.

Moving can be a real pain. Finding that perfect house can be an even bigger inconvenience. Well, if I ever had any sort of informal education from horror movies, I’ve learned two fundamental truths. There’s gonna be trouble if hooking up with a beautiful woman is effortlessly easy, or if you run across a seemingly sweet real estate property at a ridiculously low price. I’ll go a bit further and say that said real estate property is probably going to be a murder house inhabited by a vengeful spirit with some serious emotional baggage. I would almost bet the farm on it.
