Brief Encounter.The Sight & Sound critics' poll of the greatest films of all time has for decades stood as one of the more controversial and arguably the most influential measures of cinematic excellence. Originally published in 1952, the list and its formation has been updated every ten years, with new titles added, others vanishing, and additional modifications along the way. According to an excerpt from the autumn 1952 issue, the ranking was a “sequel” to the Brussels Referendum, which had been featured in a previous edition of the publication. In that poll, 100 directors were asked to vote for their ten best films ever made. As a follow-up, Sight & Sound turned to the critics, 85 of them from ten different countries; 63 responded. Since then, the sample size has obviously increased as more films were released; new contributors took part (846 critics in 2012); and historical, social, and aesthetic perspectives shifted the ultimate evaluation of what merits final inclusion.

Any WW2 action adventure involving the Norwegian resistance is Ok in my book, and this big-star saga about sabotage efforts to stop the Nazis’ atom research is a natural — much of what happens in the story is true. The show can boast marvelous locations and excellent action scenes but the script and characters aren’t very strong. Did Columbia curb epic director Anthony Mann’s greater ambitions, or did star Kirk Douglas interfere to enhance his leading character into a combo scientist, playboy and sure-shot action man? This was the final commentary recorded for us by George Hickenlooper. Carol Reed’s endlessly watchable post-war thriller, the fourth pairing of Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles, is generally considered one of the greats. Tensions between producers Alexander Korda and David O. Selznick resulted in two separate cuts of the film. Robert Krasker won an Oscar for his stylized cinematography. This is a surprisingly dunderheaded trailer, though.

Film noir wasn’t just relegated to American Hollywood films of the forties and fifties. It was something of an international movement, albeit an unconscious one, for it wasn’t until the late fifties that some critics in France looked back at the past two decades of crime pictures and proclaimed, “Oui! Film noir!”
Britain was doing it, too. Carol Reed’s 1947 Ira-thriller-that-isn’t-an-ira-thriller Odd Man Out is one of the best examples of the style. Robert Krasker’s black and white cinematography pulls in all the essential film noir elements—German expressionism, high contrasts between dark and light, and tons of shadows. Other noir trappings are present, such as stormy weather, night scenes, exterior locations, bars, shabby tenements, a lot of smoking, and a crime. Over a decade after redefining the thriller with The Third Man, director Carol Reed returned to the genre with The Running Man. Reuniting with that film s cinematographer Robert Krasker (BAFTA-nominated for his work here), Reed goes in the opposite direction visually, framing the twisty plot in sun-kissed widescreen color.
Rex Black has successfully faked his death in a plane crash and escaped to sunny Málaga under a new identity, waiting for his wife Stella to arrive with £50,000 of life insurance money. It s the start of a blissful, trouble-free new life for the couple until Stephen, the insurance agent in charge of investigating Rex s death, suddenly arrives in town. Is he just holidaying in Spain, as he claims, or is he on assignment to foil Rex s scheme?

In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the American Society of Cinematographers has released a list of the 100 best shot films of the 20th century.
This list was released to "showcase the best of cinematography as selected by professional cinematographers.” Here's how the list was put together:
The process of cultivating the 100 films began with Asc members each submitting 10 to 25 titles that were personally inspirational or perhaps changed the way they approached their craft. “I asked them — as cinematographers, members of the Asc, artists, filmmakers and people who love film and whose lives were shaped by films — to list the films that were most influential,” Fierberg explains. A master list was then complied, and members voted on what they considered to be the most essential 100 titles.

The Babadook Along with It Follows, The Babadook is a bit of a re-energizer in the horror genre, delivering mood and atmosphere over jump scares and gore. Stumbling across that list of best-edited films yesterday had me assuming that there might be other nuggets like that out there, and sure enough, there is American Cinematographer's poll of the American Society of Cinematographers membership for the best-shot films ever, which I do recall hearing about at the time. But they did things a little differently. Basically, in 1998, cinematographers were asked for their top picks in two eras: films from 1894-1949 (or the dawn of cinema through the classic era), and then 1950-1997, for a top 50 in each case. Then they followed up 10 years later with another poll focused on the films between 1998 and 2008. Unlike the editors' list, though, ties run absolutely rampant here and allow for way more than 50 films in each era to be cited. I'd love to see what these lists would look like combined, however. I imagine "Citizen Kane," which was on top of the 1894-1949 list,...

Hollywood News Network: Another new weekly series I’m going to be doing surrounds the top 25 Oscar winners in just about all of the categories. Aside from the shorts and something like Best Sound Mixing, I’ll be hitting them all, including of course the big eight categories. For starters though, I figured I’d go with one of the most highly regarded of the technical categories…Best Cinematography. Depending on the category, I may discuss the individual winners I’m citing specifically or just sort of give a broad overview of the winners, but for now, I’ll keep it simple. Honestly though, you all mostly want to see the list anyway, so I have no problem obliging you there. Just be patient over the next few paragraphs… There are few categories more overtly artistic than this one, though the category has undergone some major changes over the decades.

My father, John Harris, who has died aged 87, had a 53-year career in films, working on movies such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), The Man With the Golden Gun (1974), Superman (1978) and The Running Man (1987).
He was born in Wimbledon, south-west London, the second son of a solicitor, and educated at King's College school, Wimbledon. From an early age he was fascinated by cameras and he asked for a Zeiss Ikon for his 14th birthday. In 1941, he started work in the camera department at Gainsborough Pictures at "the Bush", their studio in Lime Grove, west London, as a clapper boy and focus puller.
He served in the navy during the second world war, and was an official naval photographer at the Japanese surrender in Hong Kong in 1945. He became a freelance camera operator in 1949 when "the Bush" studio was taken over by the BBC and Gainsborough closed soon afterwards.

It’s a collection of 135 shots from 86 movies that were put together by a site and its comments section to show the most beautiful shots in film. It’s a great list and is worth watching if just to see how many movies you recognize. The newest film in the video I noticed was The Tree of Life, Oscar nominated cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki.

There is something here for everybody and with the series kicking off tonight, we've got a special prize for some lucky readers.

This was the final commentary recorded for us by George Hickenlooper. Carol Reed's endlessly watchable post-war thriller, the fourth pairing of Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles, is generally considered one of the greats. Tensions between producers Alexander Korda and David O. Selznick resulted in two separate cuts of the film. Robert Krasker won an Oscar for his stylized cinematography. This is a surprisingly dunderheaded trailer, though.

The quality possessed by the films Studio Canal have selected for release on Blu-ray is undeniable, what is intriguing about the current crop of cinematic offerings is what they share. They are films which define their genre and time, and in these new versions they are treated with a serious love for their disparate elements as much as for the high standards of artistic success they achieve.
The Studio Canal Collection are releasing The Third Man, Mulholland Drive, The Graduate, Delicatessen and The Pianist on Blu-ray on the 13th of September and we’ll be reviewing these releases over the course of the week.
The Third Man concerns us with ferris wheels and Orson Welles, Vienna after the war and its ghosts. We have Joseph Cotten as Holly Martins chasing the spectre of his friend Harry Lime through subterranean labyrinths and vacant, shadows strewn streets as a mystery unfolds with clockwork efficiency.

This remarkable if somewhat solemn adaptation of Alan Paton's classic novel, published in 1948 on the eve of apartheid, is a milestone in political cinema and the presentation of black characters. Directed by Zoltan Korda (previously a specialist in British imperial movies) and co-scripted by an uncredited John Howard Lawson (blacklisted member of the "Hollywood 10"), it stars the great black American actor and activist Canada Lee as an Anglican priest in rural Natal and Charles Carson as a white farmer, brought together in Johannesburg through the entwined fates of their sons. Shot on South African locations by Robert Krasker (who'd just won an Oscar for The Third Man), it provides a vivid and moving portrait of a cruelly divided society of exploited, uprooted black people and troubled, guilty white people and has strong biblical undertones. There comes a point in the life of nearly every critic living that they experience a film which exceeds any boundaries of basic deconstruction. The films exist in a rarefied space in which you become unable to find the words, similes, metaphors and allegorical comparisons which can achieve the kind of grandiose description and critique you know is needed to fully communicate the brilliance of the work. For this critic, that moment has come before, but never have I been in a position to feel my critical faculties collapse around me and desire so greatly to invent a new quality scale that can provide the kind of ebullient praise that I feel needs to be heaped upon The Third Man.
