Check out The Wounded Storyteller, E. T. A. Hoffmann’s classic tales of Gothic horror and fantasy are presented in a new translation accompanying the beguiling drawings of Natalie Frank.
“E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776–1822) was one of the greatest German Romantic authors of fantasy and a pioneer in the genre we now call Gothic horror. His innovative stories explore ideas of madness, genius, doppelgängers, artificial intelligence, and the boundaries between realities and dreams. Artist Natalie Frank and leading fairy-tale scholar Jack Zipes have joined forces in this lavishly illustrated volume of five of Hoffmann’s most influential tales: The Golden Pot, The Sandman, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, The Mystifying Child, and The Mines of Falun. In addition to offering fresh translations, Zipes introduces the project and sheds light on how Hoffmann’s lifetime of personal traumas shaped his writing.”

6 January 2023 – The acclaimed British pianist, Benjamin Grosvenor, still only 30 and yet a well-established favourite of critics and audiences around the globe, takes Robert Schumann’s haunting Kreisleriana as his starting point in his new album, Schumann & Brahms. This eight-movement work portrays the mercurial personality of the fictional Johannes Kreisler, created by E. T. A. Hoffmann: Kreisler’s highs and lows, and his dreamy nature, clearly mirror Schumann’s own tragic manic-depressive tendencies. Grosvenor responds to the composer’s autobiographical honesty with playing of sublime tenderness, dazzling variety, and imaginative empathy.
He accompanies the work with the melancholic Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann by Schumann’s beloved wife Clara. Further kaleidoscopic variety is provided by Robert’s Blumenstück, and Quasi Variazione: Andantino de Clara Wieck. The recital also includes Brahms’ Three Intermezzi, autumnal works which shed a fascinating light on the complicated relationship which existed between Robert, Clara and Brahms himself.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Lee Jung-hyun's V, (co-)directed by Park Chan-wook. One of the most under-appreciated aspects of Park Chan-wook's directorial work is his penchant for Gothic flair: it's heavily on display in The Handmaiden and Thirst, but there is also a reason why his english-language debut was called Stoker. The Gothic anti-hero, full of yearning and horror is present in most of Park's work, but there is also the use of tropes directly out of Gothic horror: from the many instances where creepy puppets or marionettes show up, that evoke E.T.A Hoffman's Der Sandmann, to the vampires in Thirst. Thematically Park's work is heavily informed by...

Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger were one of the best directing duos of the 20th century; their varied output included comedies, drama, war stories, and a few musicals. Though none was quite so extravegant, rich, and ambitious as The Tales of Hoffman. Based on the fantasy opera by Jacques Offenbach, who is turn based his opera on the fantastic tales of E.T.A. Hoffman, Criterion has a newly restored edition, with rediscovered footage, as well as a host of extras that are a feast for the eyes. If ever a film was as deserving of extras, both visual and aural, it's a film like this, a rather rare and unique opera film, which combines the best of theatre, opera, and cinema. A story within a story:...

The term ‘filmed opera’ in no way describes this phantasmagoria. Powell & Pressburger re-envisions the Offenbach work with dance sequences refracted through a cinematic prism. It’s high art made for the movies, without the condescenscion seen in Disney’s Fantasia. The stars are Moira Shearer and Robert Helpmann. Powell perfects techniques from Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes to fuse music, theater, dance and cinema; Martin Scorsese calls it a ‘composed film.’ This full restoration reinstates footage not seen since the first previews in 1951.

“Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1” does a spectacular job of synthesizing the style of “The Next Generation” with that of “The Original Series” — and the result is something new altogether.

What does that mean? Well, think about this: we’ve got a race of higher life forms that look somewhat human, but in manner are clearly not. Their women are scantily clad, unnaturally hued, and a tad spacey. Their men, shirtless, leave no impression at all. And they all live in a kind of Eden where any disruption to their utopian ways could result in an apocalyptic, deus ex machina solution. They also use giant space flowers as weapons!
This could be the setup of any number of “Original Series” episodes.

Disney’s latest hollow attempt at once again crafting another franchise in the same vein as the early Pirates of the Caribbean, and Alice in Wonderland, A Wrinkle in Time pictures etc comes in the guise of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Directed by both Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston (don’t worry we’ll get onto that a little later) their dual attempt to craft something worthy of entertainment almost, not quite, but almost verges on a criminal offence to the eyes and ears of any audience subjected to it.

Update, writethru: 20th Century Fox, New Regency and Gk Films execs are floating around in ecstasy today as Bohemian Rhapsody burned through the sky to a $72.5M weekend at the international box office. Combined with domestic, the frame was worth $122.5M globally, lifting the worldwide cume to $141.7M. The Queen biopic had opened early in the UK last weekend and predictably exploded with a No. 1 bow, holding that again this session. It’s now at play in 64 overseas markets where it has a total to date of $91.7M. There’s a chance it tops $100M offshore through Monday.
Fox President of International Theatrical Distribution, Andrew Cripps, tells me the wide opening in the 2nd frame overseas came in ahead of estimates. “The exciting thing is that it played everywhere, audiences everywhere responded to the movie and judging by the UK, we see tremendous playability.” The UK’s sophomore time on...

I wasn't really sure what to expect from Disney's new fantasy film Nutcracker and the Four Realms when I saw it. The trailers for the film offered up some very vibrant CGI heavy visuals, but I was curious to see how this new film version of the story would turn out.
The movie certainly isn't for everyone, but it did turn out to be a decent fantasy adventure movie that the kids might enjoy. If you're looking for a safe movie to take the family to during the holidays then you might want to consider this one.
The movie was inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was famously adapted as a ballet by Tchaikovsky in the late 19th century.
I will say that this movie wasn't really for me. The Nutcracker isn't my thing so the interest level wasn't very high.

Yesterday evening Mackenzie Foy and Keira Knightley came to the capital to deliver the Christmas present that is The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. This is Disney’s live-action adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker about a young girl who finds a Nutcracker doll among the family’s gifts and is charged by her parents to take special care of it.
Mackenzie Foy talked about the physicality of the role, how her martial arts training helped her, and if she’d be up for a sequel and what she thinks of her fans. Keira Knightley told us how she cherished the opportunity to do something less serious than her recent roles such as Colette, and what it felt like to be a cake. She also talked about finding her voice through the music. Ellie Bamber talked about...

Chicago – Film has always felt like a much more accessible way to get cultured than, say, going to watch a play or opera. Watching a foreign film can educate you about the world and history as well as any play. “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” promised that kind of experience, but your time is better served catching the actual ballet at a local theater instead.

Conceived just a smidge over two centuries ago, E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 short story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” has been told and retold so many times over the years — as a ballet by Tchaikovsky, as a novel by Dumas, as a Christmas cartoon by Barbie — that we can reasonably conclude there’s no one right way to reinterpret the beloved classic. That said, there are certainly wrong answers, and Disney’s dazzlingly hollow, superficially PC live-action adaptation, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” veers dangerously close to blowing it, squandering a talented cast and some of the most spectacular design work this side of “My Fair Lady” on a version with precious little dance and even less chemistry.
Conceptually speaking, who better than Disney to make a definitive big-screen version of “The Nutcracker”? And yet, both the film’s title and the peculiar circumstances that led co-helmers Lasse Hallström...

It tells of a toy that comes to life and engages in battle with an evil royal ruler; much of the story takes place in a magical world, filled with wondrous creations. Now the story has been adapted into a new adventure that looks dazzling; it will open in theaters everywhere on November 2. Here's everything we know about the holiday film; watch the trailers, clips and other videos below. What's the story? Inspired by E.T.A. Fox’s Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” is heading for a North American opening weekend as high as $30 million on Nov. 2-4, early tracking showed Thursday.
“Mr. Robot” star Rami Malek is in the lead role as Mercury, the frontman for Queen. New Regency and Gk Films are the production companies. Mercury wrote numerous hits for Queen, including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen,” “Somebody to Love,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” and “We Are the Champions.” Dexter Fletcher came on board to direct in December after Fox fired Bryan Singer from the project. However, Singer has retained the directing credit.
An opening of more than $26 million for “Bohemian Rhapsody” would give it the second highest music biopic opening ever, after a $60 million opening weekend in 2015 for “Straight Outta Compton.” Tupac Shakur biopic “All Eyez on Me” opened to $26.4 million in 2017.

Disney has released the final trailer latest fantasy adventure film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. I've liked what I've seen from this movie and it looks like a wonderful film that will be packed to the brim with incredibly vibrant visuals. Disney has released a magical new trailer for their upcoming fantasy adventure film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. This wasn't a movie that I was initially excited about when it was first announced, but after watching the trailers that have been released, it actually looks like it's going to be quite a fun and entertaining movie. It also looks like it going to be filled with some pretty wild and stunning visuals.

Lasse Hallstrom and Joe Johnston will have a unique shared directing credit on Disney’s upcoming “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.”
The helmers — who are not a directing team — will be listed on the same title card for “The Nutcracker,” which stars Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, Misty Copeland, and Mackenzie Foy.
Hallstrom was the first director on the movie. Johnston was hired for a month of re-shoots, requiring extensive special effects, when Hallstrom was not available to film the additional footage.
Typically, under the Directors Guild of America’s rules, only one filmmaker can be credited with directing a film. That was the case on “Bohemian Rhapsody,” in which Bryan Singer was given the credit, even though he was fired in the latter stages of shooting and replaced by Dexter Fletcher. That rule can be waived to allow two directors to be credited when filmmakers have a history of...

Richard E. Grant is Shiver, Keira Knightley is The Sugar Plum Fairy, Eugenio Derbrez is Hawthorne and Mackenzie Foy is Clara in Disney’s The Nutcracker And The Four Realms.
For some, it’s a annual holiday tradition. Attend a performance of The Nutcracker in December. Disney has made a killing at the box office by reimagining some of its greatest works, from “Alice in Wonderland” to “The Jungle Book” and “Beauty and the Beast,” which remains the highest grossing film of 2017 (at least until “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” surpasses it). The company is set to do it again with a Christmas twist in next year’s “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.”
Directed by Lasse Hallström, the Christmas epic takes inspiration from both E.T.A. Hoffmann’s “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” and Tchaikovsky’s ballet “The Nutcracker.” Mackenzie Foy plays a young girl who is whisked away on an epic adventure through fantastical realms. Keira Knightley stars as the Sugar Plum Fairy, with Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, and ballet dancer Misty Copeland featured in supporting roles.
“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” will be released in theaters November 2, 2018. Watch the first trailer below.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is almost finished baking, but it needs a little extra sugar before it makes its way to theaters. However, because the film’s original director […]

Disney is planning a massive 32 days of additional photography on the ballet-inspired fantasy movie “Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap. In addition, the studio is bringing in “Captain America: The First Avenger” director Joe Johnston to direct the reshoots instead of original filmmaker Lasse Hallstrom. The film, based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s classic “Nutcracker” Christmas tale, is still targeting a holiday 2018 release. But the studio is clearly rethinking the film after wrapping the shoot last spring and showing a trailer at its D23 convention in July. Also Read: Disney's 'Nutcracker and the Four.

Literature in the 18th and 19th centuries was overwhelmed by Gothic and romantic tales of the strange; but even the most unusual proprietors can be hard to find in today’s market. Penguin Classics continually surprises with its releases of old, weird fiction, and its Tales of Hoffman collection presents a fascinating array of narratives and tones. Hoffmann's work ranges from melodramatic and fantastical to psychologically horrifying, but all of it exposes the reader to a strange, sometimes wondrous, always dangerous world.
Like the genre implies, most of Hoffman’s stories center around romances, either forbidden by law or impeded by an unjust villain. In “Mademoiselle de Scudery,” a woman must prove that a jeweler’s apprentice has been framed for murder so he can reunite with his love. “Doge and Dogaressa” is named for a cradle-robbing man and his bride, the latter of whom really adores an impoverished youth.

Mubi is showing Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Small Back Room (1949), The Tales of Hoffmann (1951) and Michael Powell's Peeping Tom (1960) in November and December, 2017 in the United States in the series Powell & Pressburger: Together and Apart. The story goes that when they were casting their first flat-out masterpiece together, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger sent a letter to an actress outlining a manifesto of their production company, called "the Archers." At the time, the Archers was freshly incorporated, with Powell and Pressburger sharing all credit for writing, directing, and producing, and their manifesto had five points. Point one was to ensure that they provided their financial backers with "a profit, not a loss," which may raise eyebrows among those who are used to manifestos burning with anti-capitalist fire—but then, in a system like commercial cinema, profitability buys freedom.

We begin in a quiet house, after the joyous occasion of a baby’s baptism. An innocuous question—why is one of the house’s beams so withered and small?—leads to the unraveling of a dark story involving unjust cruelty, desperate choices, and satanic vengeance. Many fantastical stories of the 18th and 19th centuries feature such plot devices, but none of them reach the viscerally horrific heights of Jeremias Gotthelf’s The Black Spider.
