Sir David Attenborough presents ‘Mammals’ season 1 (Photo Credit: Alex Board/Bbca/BBC Studios)
BBC America, AMC+, and Sir David Attenborough turn their attention to mammals with their latest natural history series, Mammals. The six-part series will premiere this summer, 20 years after Attenborough’s Life of Mammals.
“Being mammals ourselves, the animals featured in the series and the stories told about them are instantly relatable. It’s impossible not to admire a mother capuchin monkey who’s able to provide her baby with a drink in a dry, sun-baked forest or a chimpanzee father giving his family a lesson in finding honey buried underground,” said Roger Webb, executive producer. “This connection to us, makes Mammals an incredibly engaging and compelling piece of television – one that will also lead us to question our role in the lives of the wild mammals we share the planet with.”

Exclusive: Matthew Wilder has been set to write and direct an untitled film that chronicles the life and work of author Joan Didion.
The plan is to paint a dreamlike day in the life of Didion and California in the late 1960s, when the brilliant young journalist is hurtled from encounters with jailed Manson girls to protesting Black Panthers, and from Nancy Reagan pausing in a photo op to Vietnam War POWs — climaxing with an epilogue in a near-future California where an AI Joan encounters a dystopia beyond her wildest anxiety dreams.
The film, produced under David Michaels’ Enfant Terrible Cinema, will shoot in Los Angeles in the first or second quarter of 2024. Financing is being discussed with potential partners this week at AFM.

The Writers Guild of America West has re-elected Meredith Stiehm as its president and Michele Mulroney as its vice president in an unusual strike-era officer and board of directors election.
Incumbent Betsy Thomas won the seat for secretary-treasurer, beating out Jeffrey Thompson, in the voting period that ended on Tuesday. Other officer candidates included Rich Talarico, who had been running for president, and Isaac Gómez, who had been running for vice president. Voting took place between August 29 and Sept. 19 amid the ongoing writers’ strike, which began more than four months ago.
Candidates who won seats on the union’s board of directors included incumbents Adam Conover, Nicole Yorkin, Dailyn Rodriguez, Zoe Marshall and Dante W. Harper, as well as fresh candidates Molly Nussbaum, Scott Alexander and Rob Forman.
Three thousand seven hundred eighty-three valid ballots were cast in the election, which was administered by Votenet Solutions. Around 11,000 WGA West members were eligible to vote,...

Meredith Stiehm has been reelected as president of WGA West, in a strong show of support as the union’s strike continues into its fifth month.
Stiehm took 3,354 votes, easily defeating Rich Talarico, who took just 300 votes.
Two other officers were also reelected: Michele Mulroney, as vice president, and Betsy Thomas, as secretary-treasurer. Five board members were reelected, and three new members were also elected to the board.
Stiehm was the showrunner of “Cold Case” on CBS and “The Bridge” on FX. She was also a key figure in the union’s fight against agency packaging in 2019-21. She alleged that CAA, her former agency, collected almost as much for packaging “Cold Case” as she did for writing the show.
Since the strike began on May 2, Stiehm has described herself as a “wartime president,” and has said that the union is on the path to success.

Stephen King knows a thing or two about haunted hotels. His "The Shining" is the granddaddy of haunted hotel tales, and he even returned to the Overlook Hotel with the sequel "Doctor Sleep." And then there's "1408," King's short story about one mean room. King originally wrote part of the story as part of his non-fiction work "On Writing." It was merely meant to illustrate how a story changes from draft to draft. But the story turned out to be pretty darn good, and a fully formed "1408" became part of an audiobook collection before ending up in King's short story anthology "Everything's Eventual."
Since this is a Stephen King story we're talking about, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood came calling. Writers Matt Greenberg, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski took King's story and expanded it to feature length, keeping the basic outline of what King had...

“American Crime Story” writer/producer Scott Alexander remembers the WGA strikes of 1988 and 2007 and told TheWrap that this time there’s “a sense of righteousness” as writers and actors hold out for issues like higher residuals from streaming.
“There’s a positive attitude this time and a sense of righteousness. And a sense that there’s something bigger happening here in society that wasn’t there in the previous strikes,”Alexander told TheWrap on Monday while picketing at CBS Television City in Los Angeles.
“There’s a sense of just completely not being able to back down on this one. And it’s very clear-cut. In ’88, it wasn’t really clear what we were striking for… This time, everyone knows what they’re fighting for. They’re fighting [to end] s—ty practices and streaming, and mini-rooms, and short orders and non-existent residuals,” he added.

The works of Stephen King are one of (if not the) biggest reasons that I fell in love with horror. With so many of his novels and short stories having been turned into feature films, it’s kind of hard to have never watched at least one – even if by accident. You have classic films such as The Shining and Pet Sematary, and then you have adaptations that you’re better off just reading the book. Speaking of Cell, its two stars, John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, happen to be in one of my all-time favorite King stories brought to life, 1408. Based on the short story of the same name, it started out as an audiobook (Blood and Smoke) before being printed in the collection, Everything's Eventual in 2002.
In the film, John Cusack plays Mike Enslin, an author who is highly skeptical of anything paranormal (even if writing about...

Meredith Stiehm will seek a second two-year term as president of WGA West in the fall election, and the other top officials of the guild will also seek reelection.
Justine Bateman, the writer-director and former “Family Ties” star, is running for a spot on the WGA West board. Bateman has become outspoken on the need for tight regulation of artificial intelligence.
The guild announced its preliminary list of nominees on Wednesday. Stiehm, who has been active in both the agency campaign and the current strike, will run against challenger Rich Talarico, a “Key and Peele” writer who has faulted the guild for not doing more to fight back against the release of free clips of the show on YouTube.

Two years ago, during the lockdown, I wrote that I had become addicted to those little bird-box libraries that make walking here something of a literary pilgrimage.
I’m still addicted. And almost two months ago, just before the writers strike began, I made a charming discovery–that one of my neighbors is a Very Famous Writer– all thanks to his sidewalk library.
The writer will remain unnamed, because privacy is something to be respected, even by reporters. But here’s the short form:
About four o’clock one afternoon, before the dog-crowd comes out, I felt a need for one of those short, head-clearing walks. A good target, I figured, would be a spot some blocks away, where somebody or other was maintaining what I’d long thought was the best little library in town. I won’t give titles, because some of those might tip the owner’s identity.

In a competitive situation, Apple Original Films has nabbed “Outcome,” the new dark comedy directed by Jonah Hill, which is in talks to star Keanu Reeves and Hill. The movie will be produced by Apple Studios.
Reeves plays Reef, a damaged Hollywood star who goes on a long journey of the soul after he is confronted with a mysterious video clip from his past. The script was written by Hill and Ezra Woods and produced by Hill and Matt Dines under their Strong Baby banner. This will be Hill’s second narrative feature after “Mid90s,” which he made for A24 and Scott Rudin.
Last year, Netflix released Hill’s documentary feature “Stutz,” about the life and work of Dr. Phil Stutz, Hill’s therapist. Hill’s last two on-screen performances were also for Netflix – he appeared in Kenya Barris’ somewhat controversial “You People” earlier this year and in 2021 co-starred in...

Margaret Keane, who went to court to prove that her popular paintings of children with large, sad eyes were indeed hers and not her husband’s, a tale that was told in the Tim Burton film Big Eyes, has died. She was 94.

Margaret Keane, whose wildly popular paintings of big-eyed, melancholy children (and later celebrities with deep pockets) became one of the most widely recognized signature artistic styles of the late 20th Century – and whose long battle with her husband over his fraudulent and lucrative claims of authorship inspired the 2014 Tim Burton film Big Eyes starring Amy Adams – died Sunday at home in Napa, California. She was 94.
Her death was reported on her official Facebook page today: “We’re sad to announce that Margaret Keane, ‘The Mother of Big Eyes, our Queen, a Modern Master and Legend’ peacefully passed away Sunday morning at her home in Napa, CA, she was 94.”
Her daughter Jane Swigert told The New York Times that the cause of death was heart failure.
Keane’s instantly recognizable paintings of children, typically portrayed and described as waifs with huge, sad and dinner-plate-sized eyes, became massively popular in the 1950s and ’60s,...

“What you call dirty words, I call ghetto expression”, said in-your-face underground standup comic and R&b singer Rudy Ray Moore, who passed away 12 years ago at 81. This is the sequel to his first vehicle, Dolemite, which he based on a trash-talking wino who frequented a Los Angeles record shop Moore managed. Although his mainstream profile was minimal, Moore was well-known in the counterculture and influenced many comics and hip-hop. Moore lives again in the person of Eddie Murphy in Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander’s 2019 bio-drama, Dolemite Is My Name.

FX’s release of “Impeachment: American Crime Story” will no longer coincide with the 2020 election. Citing executive producer Ryan Murphy’s busy schedule, FX Networks and FX Productions Chairman John Landgraf said the original release date of September 27, 2020 is no longer “reasonable.” He also unveiled his annual tally of the total number of original scripted shows, with 2019 ending up as the highest volume of scripted programming ever.
“We’re making 10 episodes. Ryan, who is objectively the busiest man in show business, is not available to start production until March 21,” Landgraf said during his executive session at FX’s TCA presentation. “I don’t think [a September release date is] reasonable, given that we don’t plan to wrap until October.”

The third season of FX’s “American Crime Story” on the impeachment of Bill Clinton will not air in September as it was originally scheduled to do, FX chief John Landgraf said Thursday.
The reason for the delay is due to Murphy’s busy schedule (FX renewed his other anthology “American Horror Story” for three more seasons on Thursday). “I don’t think that’s reasonable, frankly given that it wont finish production until October,” Landgraf said during the Television Critics Association press tour. He was unsure about when it would premiere. “I don’t think we’ll make it by September.”
That means that, with the 2020 Presidential Election set for Nov. 3, “Impeachment” likely won’t air until after that. Last summer, Landgraf defended the decision to air “Impeachment,” which centers on the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky impeachment drama, just months ahead of the 2020 election, In addition, he called the current media environment “toxic.

It was originally announced that FX’s American Crime Story: Impeachment would air before Tuesday, November 3, Election Day, which caused some backlash.
Today, FX Networks chairman John Landgraf said at the TCA winter press tour that “we won’t make it by September. We can’t start (production) until March 21 of this year and we won’t physically be done until October. So it’s a long production.” In total, it’s Tbd as of right now.
Landgraf didn’t specifically say that FX would miss an airdate prior to Election Day.
Landgraf said Impeachment missing an airdate prior to Election Day doesn’t stem from the backlash following the announcement, “but Ryan (Murphy’s) scheduling. It’s really his availability and the timing of the production.”
Ryan Murphy told us back in the fall that Impeachment would have a spring start due to his work on the Netflix musical Prom with Meryl Streep.

“Impeachment: American Crime Story” is not going to start airing on FX ahead of the 2020 Presidential election as originally planned.
FX chairman John Landgraf made the announcement Thursday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. Landgraf said that Ryan Murphy is currently directing a feature film and will be unavailable to begin production until late March. Production on the 10-episode season is not slated to end until October. Given the usual length of the post-production process, the show will likely not air its first episode before the election on Nov. 3. Exclusive: The Craig Brewer-directed Dolemite Is My Name stars Eddie Murphy as Rudy Ray Moore, the unsung filmmaking hero who would eventually help define the Blaxploitation era of cinema.
Written by Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski, Dolemite is essentially a story about the American Dream and a sense of community for those in the margins in Hollywood. Moore was a comedian who had more failures than successes until he assumed the persona of Dolemite. Many saw the alter ego as crude, and his blatantly explicit album covers and songs were too racy for radio, so they began selling bootlegs of his albums.

Biopics allow filmmakers to humanize our myths, mythologize our contemporaries, re-evaluate history at a fundamentally human level, and catalogue our present so that future generations can understand what the hell we are going through. It’s been an entire decade full of great biopics, too many to fit in a conventional list, but when all is said and done, we have to call these the ten absolutely essential films in the genre from the 2010s.
Runners-Up: “127 Hours,” “Behind the Candelabra,” “A Dangerous Method,” “Dolemite is My Name,” “Jackie,” “Mr. Turner,” “Rocketman,” “Southside With You,” “Straight Outta Compton,” “The Wind Rises”

Netflix explored complex relationships and gave a nod to the 1970s at Deadline’s Contenders New York on Saturday with a look at The Two Popes, Marriage Story and Dolomite is My Name. Actor Jonathan Pryce said he so resembles Pope Francis, “That the day he was named Pope, the Internet was full of images of Pope Francis and me, and Pope Francis and the High Sparrow. My son even called to ask, ‘Dad, are you the Pope?’” (Pryce was referring to his role as the morally bankrupt cult leader in Game of Thrones.) The Two Popes imagines what might have been said behind closed doors during encounters between liberal Cardinal Bergoglio, the soon-to-be, and current, Pope Francis, and conservative Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins) before he abdicated from the papacy. It was the first time in 700 years that there were two popes living at the same time. “They met a couple of times.

A version of this story about “Dolemite Is My Name” writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski first appeared in the Actors/Directors/Screenwriters issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
Over the last 25 years, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski have become known for writing a string of artful and entertaining films about unusual people: hapless B-movie director Ed Wood (“Ed Wood”), porn publisher-turned-First Amendment-crusader Larry Flynt, (“The People vs. Larry Flynt”), comedian Andy Kaufman (“Man on the Moon”) and artists Walter and Margaret Keane (“Big Eyes”) among them.
(After those, they also did the award-winning “The People v. O.J. Simpson” miniseries.)
Their latest is “Dolemite Is My Name,” the outrageous chronicle of pioneering African-American comic and blaxploitation legend Rudy Ray Moore, whose ragged but successful attempt to turn himself into a movie star seems unbelievable but isn’t.

“I grew up watching foreign-language films,” director Alfonso Cuarón quipped after his “Roma” won the Oscar for foreign-language film last year. “Learning so much from them and being inspired. Films like ‘Citizen Kane,’ ‘Jaws,’ ‘Rashomon,’ ‘The Godfather’ and ‘Breathless.’”
For foreign-language committee co-chairs Larry Karaszewski and Diane Weyermann, who had taken over the position that year from Mark Johnson, the co-chair for 17 of the previous 18 years, Cuarón’s joke was enough to prompt a change that had been a long-standing debate within the Academy. The category that had been called foreign-language film since 1956, when Federico Fellini’s “La Strada” won the award, was changed to international feature film, to reflect a more inclusive understanding of global cinema.
“It was something that has been discussed for years and years and years,” says screenwriter Karaszewski, whose latest, “Dolemite Is My Name,” co-written with longtime creative partner Scott Alexander, is up for Oscar consideration this year.

After becoming the first African-American to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design with Black Panther, Ruth E. Carter embarked on her sixth collaboration with Eddie Murphy on Craig Brewer’s biographical comedy, Dolemite Is My Name.
Here, Carter channeled the essence of Rudy Ray Moore, a charismatic self-starter who gained a cult following in the ’70s as a comedian, guerilla film actor and producer, through his creation of the Dolemite character—an eccentric ‘urban dandy,’ who entertained the masses with his karate kicks and iconic, handmade looks, over the course of four films.
Going through 75 different story days over the course of the film, Moore (and his alter ego) subsequently had 75 different looks, so Carter spent a substantial amount of time with Murphy in prep, taking the actor through fittings until he was exhausted. “I could always tell when he was exhausted [because] he got real quiet. But in the onset,...

“We concentrate on people that are extremely passionate about what they want to do,” explains “Dolemite is My Name” screenwriter Larry Karaszewski about the subjects he and writing partner Scott Alexander choose to tackle. “Usually their passion is in something that society in general thinks is wrongheaded,” but “they have a belief in themselves” that carries them through. Watch our exclusive video interview with Karaszewski and Alexander above.
That’s certainly the case with Rudy Ray Moore (Eddie Murphy), a struggling standup comedian who struck gold by throwing everything he had into a Z-grade blaxploitation movie that turned into a huge hit: “Dolemite” (1975). For the men who penned biopics on such offbeat American figures as Ed Wood (“Ed Wood”), Larry Flynt (“The People vs. Larry Flynt”), Andy Kaufman (“Man on the Moon”) and Margaret Keane (“Big Eyes“), Moore was the perfect protagonist.

During a year in which the world finds itself increasingly in the throes of totalitarianism and corruption, when institutions, traditions and good old common sense seems to be crumbling before our very eyes, when the world itself appears to be catching fire, a spirit of thanksgiving may be one that is hard to come by. But there are reasons to give thanks even in light of those realities, ones even directly to those realities, and I encourage you to seek out those reasons, be as grateful as is warranted, and find ways to express that gratitude. In other words, don’t let the bastards get you down.
In the world of the movies, there was the usual degree of lousy movies, some franchise-related, of course, but some that were pretty shitty of their own accord. And at the same time, there were lots of reasons to justify gratitude. Here are...

Academy Award nominee Michael J. Pollard, known for his roles in “Bonnie and Clyde” and “House of 1000 Corpses,” has died. He was 80.
“House of 1000 Corpses” director Rob Zombie broke the news on Facebook early Friday morning.
“We have lost another member of our ‘House of 1000 Corpses’ family. I woke up to the news that Michael J. Pollard had died. I have always loved his work and his truly unique on screen presence,” Zombie said in his post. “He was one of the first actors I knew I had to work with as soon as I got my first film off the ground. He will be missed.”
Born 1939 in Passaic, N.J., Pollard attended Montclair Academy and Actors Studio in New York City in his early career. He started out in television in the late ’50s, appearing on shows like “Lost in Space” and “Star Trek,” but landed his breakout role as C.
