Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In light of recent “Galaxy Quest” and “Lord of the Rings” news, which movie/movie franchise should be rebooted as a TV series? (question courtesy of Allison Keene)
Pilot Viruet (@pilotbacon), Vice
I have so many ideas for this! During that season we got “Minority Report” and “Limitless,” I got angry about how many of these reboots/remakes/sequels are male-skewering and male-dominated and started making a list of all the movies I’d rather see instead – obviously ones that are more focused on telling stories about women and non-binary folks. “Whip It” could be a fantastic Freeform teen drama series (I’m still angry that...

From Blonde And Blonder and You Stupid Man, through to Edmond: we go through the recent straight-to-dvd films of Denise Richards...
So far in this series of pieces that look at the straight-to-dvd or VOD movies of some of our favourite actors who have fallen on hard times, we’ve only looked at men (to date: Bruce Willis, Nicolas Cage, John Cusack and John Travolta). That’s because, mostly, actresses find themselves almost completely out of the game once they hit 30ish – an unnecessary full stop that a lot of us would like to see removed in the future.
Denise Richards, sadly, is no different. After marrying a man she found herself in an abusive relationship with, her career climb stumbled and she was forced back down into TV roles, where she’s currently still putting in the hours.
Richards had a sparkling, American Dream-like start in life.

While the holidays unfolded, we lost two of the greatest photographers to ever work in cinema, and it's only when you look back at the filmography they leave behind and the legacy they passed on to all the cameramen who worked under them and then went on to shoot films of their own that you understand the magnitude of what we've lost. There was a point in my own film education when I stopped going from actor to actor or from director to director in the way I was watching movies and spent a summer going from cinematographer to cinematographer, and doing that proved to be an education in the tricky definition of what we call "authorial voice" in film. I think it is only in collaboration that magic happens, and one of the people who has to be absolutely killing it for that to work is the cinematographer. The...

Brian De Palma has become the directorial litmus test of cinephiles everywhere. To supporters, he stands as a startling visual genius with a penchant for set pieces and lurid subject matter. To naysayers, he remains a lowbrow imitator who spends his studio budgets chasing the ghosts of Alfred Hitchcock and Jean-Luc Godard. Great director or high class hack? Inconsistent misogynist or Master of the Macabre? Much like his fractured narratives, the answer is never an easy one to attain.
Both sides provide ample support for their case. De Palma’s resume is riddled with enough hollow imitations (Sisters [1973], Raising Cain [1992]) and bloated commercial flops (The Bonfire of the Vanities [1990], The Black Dahlia [2006]) to sink any director. But even in misfires such as these, an undeniable attention to detail remains.

Special Mention: Werckmeister Harmonies
Directed by Bela Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky
Written by László Krasznahorkai and Bela Tarr
2000, Hungary / Italy / Germany
Genre: Emotional Horror
Bela Tarr is a filmmaker whose work is a highly acquired taste, but as a metaphysical horror story, Werckmeister Harmonies is an utter masterpiece that should appeal to most cinephiles. The film title refers to the 17th-century German organist-composer Andreas Werckmeister, esteemed for his influential structure and harmony of music. Harmonies is strung together like a magnificent symphony working on the viewer’s emotions over long stretches of time even when the viewer is unaware of what’s going on. Attempting to make sense of Tarr’s movies in strict narrative terms is not the best way to go about watching his films; but regardless if you come away understanding Harmonies or not, you won’t soon forget the film. Special Mention: Dressed To Kill
Directed by Brian De Palma
Written by Brian De Palma
1980, USA
Genre: Thriller
Brian De Palma’s films, like Tarantino’s, are a cinematic mash-up of influences from the past, and in De Palma case he borrows heavily from Alfred Hitchcock. Obsession is De Palma’s Vertigo, Blow Out his Rear Window, and with Dressed to Kill the director set its sights on Psycho. Dressed To Kill is more thriller than horror but what a stylish and twisted thriller it is! The highlight here is an amazing ten-minute chase sequence set in an art gallery and conducted entirely without dialogue. There are a number of other well-sustained set pieces including a race in the subway system and even, yes, a gratuitous shower murder sequence. Dressed To Kill features an excellent cast (Michael Caine, Nancy Allen, Angie Dickinson), a superb score (courtesy of Pino Donaggio) and...

July 25, 1980. That was the day Dressed to Kill opened in theaters across the country, and it marked the first of countless times I would see the movie projected on a big screen, on a drive-in screen, panned and scanned for home video, even interrupted and cut to ribbons for network TV. But I’ll never forget seeing it that first time, in a cavernous old movie palace in downtown Eugene, Oregon, its lush, complex, violently dynamic and meticulously choreographed images, all set to a Pino Donaggio score which reflected precisely those same qualities, thrilling me to my core. I left that theater buzzing, even if at first I wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about the movie-- it took me a few days and another screening or two to decide that the outraged cries of Hitchcock plagiarism coming from some circles were unwarranted. For me, Dressed to Kill is...

“Murder In Soft Focus”
By Raymond Benson
Brian De Palma’s crime thriller/horror flick, Dressed to Kill, was a controversial release in 1980 for its depiction of violence against women and its sexual content— nevertheless, it was a successful entry in the director’s oeuvre during the most fruitful period of his long career. The film was released in America with an “R” rating—but only after De Palma, under protest, compromised with the ratings board and agreed to cut some footage, re-edit a couple of sequences, and change some lines of dialogue.
De Palma’s preferred unrated version of the film was released on home video not too long ago, but The Criterion Collection has seen fit to issue a new, 4K digital restoration, supervised by the director, of what might have been an “X”-rated picture back in the day. The results are gorgeous. De Palma’s thrillers...

Criterion beautifully restores Brian De Palma’s early masterpiece, Dressed to Kill, his 1980 title often lumped in with a quartet of other films categorized as Hitchcockian riffs, criticized or celebrated for how they playfully exhume style, narrative and tone from iconic titles. Although it’s nearly impossible to discuss the film without an acknowledgment of its obvious homage, it’s also a strikingly original piece in its own right, one that most easily sidesteps the derivative trappings of the ‘anxiety of influence’ theory thanks to its complex design as a critique on rigid social constructions.
Kate Miller (Angie Dickinson) is an unhappily married housewife, saddled with husband number two, a man whose underwhelming lovemaking she describes to therapist Dr. Elliott (Michael Caine) as the root her problems. When her precocious teenage son (Keith Gordon) declines to go on a lunchtime museum trip, Kate goes alone, and becomes involved in a casual tryst with a stranger.

MacDeath: All the World’s a Grave in Stilted Found Footage Horror
It seems we’ve yet to hit the bottom of the found footage barrel, at least if the new studio backed PG-13 teen scream title The Gallows is any indication. Director Travis Cluff reunites with Chris Lofling, the editor of his 2012 family film Gold Fools, to co-write and direct this obnoxious entry managing to be more adolescent than its terrorized subjects. With vapid drudgery, a quartet of unpleasant juveniles struggle to survive the haunted halls of their high school, while audiences are required to check logic and comprehension at the plot synopsis in order to sustain the running time. Nonsensical and laborious, this is a horridly designed, cheaply assembled outfit only managing to offer up proof as to why found footage horror is not the sensible alternative to churning out low overhead cinema.

The 1980s were a time in which the science fiction and adventure film genres reigned supreme. Films like Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Ghostbusters (1984), and Back to the Future (1985) are three of strong examples of classic 80s films that expanded their respective universes to further installments. The sequel, while a sometimes surefire way of making money off of an already established and original idea, can at times continue the adventure and prolong the cinematic magic in wonderful ways.
Filmmaker George Lucas popularized the sequel concept in 1980 with a follow-up to 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope. He had a vision when starting his space opera at episode #4 and The Empire Strikes Back furthered the adventures of Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C3P0. It is thought by many to be far superior to its predecessor. A third installment soon followed and so did a prequel trilogy in 1999. These...

The Ugly Behind-the-Scenes History of Video Game Movies
“Few Hollywood announcements are treated with such fierce-yet-wounded anticipation as video game adaptations. Full of incredible artistry, instantly-recognizable characters and an increasingly-mature approach to storytelling, you’d be forgiven for thinking gaming is a medium particularly well suited for making the jump to the silver screen. But history tells another story.”

“A little more than 25 years ago, Orion Pictures released RoboCop, a grimly hysterical, hyper-violent satire masquerading as an action film. And despite spawning two sequels, a television series, some anime, and now a remake, the film’s success was inimitable. This is partly because RoboCop only really became a great film as it was made. Director Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Basic Instinct) worked tirelessly to revise scenes while actors like Kurtwood Smith, who plays Clarence Boddecker, the film’s main heavy, improvised some of the movie’s best lines.

If you're a male of a certain age, the idea of remaking "RoboCop" is very nearly unfathomable.
The movie was a deeply personal one that showed a lot of us what the possibilities of action filmmaking really were (along with "Die Hard," released a year later); at once totally of its time and utterly timeless. And yet, a remake is exactly what we're getting this week, with MGM and Sony's big-screen overhaul of "RoboCop."
This new story features some familiar elements, mostly having to do with a street smart Detroit cop (this time played by Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman from TV's "The Killing"), who is horribly injured in the line of duty but brought back to life (sort of) using cutting-edge technology. He might be mostly machine now, but the existential questions of humanity and the soul still remain, buried within his hardwired programming.

Daily Dead: Thanks for speaking with us today, Pj- it’s incredible that Halloween and so many of your other movies have endured the way that they have over the years.

Oh, high school, you eternal fountain of youth — where the girls come model-pretty and mature for their age, the boys are star athletes with fully developed vocal cords, your English teacher is Michael Vartan, and all your homework problems are actually matters of life and death. All true, if your high school is set on a Hollywood campus.
If you’ve ever seen a John Hughes film, lived through the ’90s, or followed Lindsay Lohan’s early career, chances are, you’ve seen a high school-set film with a dance scene. Now, compared with typical high school dance experiences — which...

The remake of Carrie by Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry) continues to move forward. Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass) is set to play the title character with telekenetic powers. Julianne Moore will play Carrie's fundamentalist mother. Slashfilm is reporting that two new cast members have been added: Portia Doubleday (Youth in Revolt) and Judy Greer (Arrested Development). According to Deadline, Doubleday will play the primary villain in the film as “bad girl Chris Hargensen,” who was portrayed by Nancy Allen in Brian De Palma’s original. I am changing everything about me—my hair, my look… I’m doing my own take on [the character]. The script is totally different from the [original]. It’s more like the book.

Texas Frightmare Weekend, which ran May 4-6, 2012, now bills itself as the premier con in the Southwest, and as our event report will attest, that's definitely accurate. This year the guest list was massive, around 20 films were screened, and a Carrie-themed prom was held. The film list alone was bigger than many film festivals.
Folks, we can just drop the pretenses and say what everyone should know by now: Texas is The mecca for horror in the United States.
More goes on in the horror world right here in the Lone Star State every day than anywhere else. We've got countless filmmakers, crew, writers, musicians, models, photographers, and yes, even journalists working in the horror genre than anywhere else. Period.
We also now have a massive convention every year. Texas Frightmare Weekend was always a great con, but with its new digs at the Hyatt Regency Dfw, it's expanded to extreme size.

Remake of Stephen King's Carrie has Chloe Grace Moretz in negotiations for leading role. Helmer Kim Peirce, MGM and Screen Gems are going with Chloe Grace Moretz, making an offer for the lead in the remake of the Stephen King horror, reports Deadline. Based on King's 1974 bestseller, the story tells of Carrie White, a girl raised by her overly religious mother who has to deal with a powerful telepathic ability and puberty. Her classmates are in for a bloody surprise when their scheme to humiliate her at the prom brings out all the darkness within. The original film starred Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, John Travolta, Betty Buckley and William Katt. Moretz was last scene in Martin Scorsese's Academy Award-winning Hugo and is in post-production on Tim Burton's incredible-looking upcoming Dark Shadows fantasy, alongside Johnny Depp, Eva Green and Helena Bonham Carter.

Teddy makes one of his "guest appearances" on tonight's 90210, in what's supposed to involve some kind of mock wedding ceremony thrown by his friends to show their support.
We're curious to see exactly what that means, but no matter the end result, we know that Trevor Donovan will bring his usual sincerity and warmth to the role. He certainly knows how to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
In tribute to Teddy's upcoming ... whatever, we present this chronological pictorial scrapbook, from the moment we first started following Teddy's journey, when an earthquake rocked West Beverly High, to his coming out to his father in the first episode of this season.
Enjoy the pics, but first you can see Trevor give a special video shoutout to Ae readers, and let's also take a moment to wish him a very Happy 33rd Birthday today!

In A Better World (Sony) Winner of last year’s Best Foreign Film Oscar, this Danish export looks at two fractured families and the effect that the adult world dysfunction has on their two sons, who form an immediate and potentially deadly bond. Director Susanne Bier delivers another powerful work that maintains its drive during the films’ first 2/3, then falters somewhat during the last act. Still, well-worth seeing, and beautifully made. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Commentary by Bier and editor Pernille Bech Christensen; Interview with Bier. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
X-men First Class (20th Century Fox) “Origins” film set in the early 1960s, traces the beginnings of Magento and Professor X (played ably here by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy), and how the once-close friends and colleagues became bitter enemies. First half is slam-bang entertainment at its stylish best,...
