While writing and directing a well-received short film can be a great stepping stone to features, aspiring feature directors should avoid the trap of making short after short.
Producer Raquelle David expressed that view on social media, prompting a flood of comments, some in full support, others disagreeing.
.Australian writers and directors that have made one solid short film need to stop making more,. said David, who has produced more than a dozen shorts and is developing several features.
.Seriously, stop. Focus on the feature or high-end TV concept and work with producers that will help you realise it. I'm so worried about our industry pumping out great shorts but bugger all else..
Screenwriter Shane Danielsen, who made his directing debut on the short The Guests, which screened in official competition in Cannes, produced by David, responded, .Could not agree more..

A movie based on the Tony-winning Broadway musical The Drowsy Chaperone is being developed as a Canadian-Australian co-production.
Geoffrey Rush, who played the character known as Man in the Chair in the Australian stage production, is set to reprise the role in the film, which will be directed by Fred Schepisi.
A tongue-in-cheek tribute to the golden era of Broadway musicals, Cole Porter and George and Ira Gershwin, the plot sees a musical literally bursting to life in the man.s living room, telling the rambunctious tale of a brazen Broadway starlet trying to find, and keep, her true love.
The lead Canadian producer is Rhombus Media.s Niv Fichman, whose credits include Silk, Enemy, Blindness, The Red Violin and Antiviral.

Michael Petroni is understandably chuffed by the B.O. results of The Book Thief, his adaptation of the Marcus Zusak novel- particularly in Australia. Yet he wonders how the WWII drama might have turned out if he hadn.t been asked to do multiple rewrites by the studio, Fox 2000, and the director, Downton Abbey.s Brian Percival. .My major disappointment with the rewrites was that they took out most of the magic realism that features in the book,. said Petroni, who is editing the Aussie psychological thriller Backtrack, the first film he.s directed since 2002.s Till Human Voices Wake Us. .Fox wanted a film that would appeal to families, not just adults, and Brian wanted to tell more of a straight, dramatic tale..

Adrien Brody, Sam Neill, Bruce Spence, Robin McLeavy and Anna Lise Phillips are shooting Backtrack, a psychological thriller from writer-director Michael Petroni. Jamie Hilton, who is producing with Petroni, his partner in See Pictures, and Antonia Barnard, says the project was relatively easy to finance. That was due primarily to how sales agents, distributors and other financiers responded to Petroni.s screenplay, the saga of psychologist Peter Bowers who discovers his patients are the ghosts of people who died in an accident 20 years earlier. Another advantage during the financing was that Petroni.s status as a writer was rising as The Book Thief, his adaptation of the Markus Zusak novel, started shooting in Germany. Screen Australia, UK-based sales agent Bankside and Oz distributor Madman Entertainment came on board before Brody, an Oscar winner for The Pianist and who starred in Midnight in Paris and The Brothers Bloom, was attached. The other participants are Screen Nsw,...

John Curran’s Tracks, from The King’s Speech producer See-Saw Films, will have its world premiere as the opening night film of the Adelaide Film Festival on October 10.
Based on an iconic book, the film tells the true story of author Robyn Davidson’s 1,700 mile trek from the middle of Australia to the Indian Ocean in the late 1970s.
Many fine actresses “came after” the role, Curran told ScreenDaily, but from the minute he met Mia Wasikowska he felt she had the ability to embody the complex and contradictory real-life character.
“There was something about her (Wasikowska’s) spirit … She’s very very smart and good at articulating ideas, which was remarkable to me at such a young age,” he said. “She is in practically every frame of the film and was on set every day in that heat, often miles away for the wide shots, managing on her own with four camels and a dog.”

Screen Australia has found investment funding to back a new feature film: Backtrack.
It is the first major feature film or television project to receive funding from Screen Australia since last December, when the national screen agency revealed that it had committed its entire annual $42 milion budget within half a year.
While the funding for Backtrack surprised some in the industry, Screen Australia previously said the funding allocation was anticipated last December but only approved at the February 20 board meeting.
Backtrack is described as a spine-chilling supernatural thriller from writer/director Michael Petroni and producers Jamie Hilton (The Waiting City) and Antonia Barnard (Last Ride). The film follows a psychologist whose life is thrown into turmoil when he discovers his patients are all ghosts of people who died in an accident 20 years prior. A sequel to last year.s successful low-budget horror film The Tunnel is currently in the works.
The sequel . titled The Tunnel: Dead End . received development funding from Screen Australia earlier this month and will pick up the story years down the track. No shoot date has been set for the horror flick.
It.s a sequel creators Enzo Tedeschi and Julian Harvey weren.t planning on. .Initially, we weren.t anticipating doing another Tunnel film but the overwhelmingly positive reaction to the original . as well as our fans clamouring for another on an almost daily basis . made us go back and give it a second thought,. Tedeschi and Harvey, of Distracted Media, said in a joint statement.
.We weren't going to go ahead unless we could find a story we were 100 per cent behind, which we now have, and are thrilled to have the support of Screen Australia.

A new report commissioned by the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (Afact) has found that the economic impact of film piracy equated to $1.37 billion and 6,100 jobs lost over a 12-month period.
“The Ipsos research tells us that movie theft has a destructive impact not just on the film industry, but the economic damage also reverberates through our entire community,” said Afact executive director Neil Gane. The announcement was made on the set of Stephan Elliott’s upcoming comedy A Few Best Men in Sydney. Producer Antonia Barnard said she hoped that, when released, “people will choose to see the film as it is intended to be seen – on the big screen –or that they choose to buy or rent a DVD legally rather than viewing it online via illegal downloads”.
The main findings were:
1. Allowing for effects on other industries, $1.37 billion in revenue and 6,100 jobs were lost across the entire economy.
