Kino Lorber has acquired Agnieszka Holland’s critically acclaimed refugee drama Green Border for North America, the company confirmed Tuesday. Kino Lorber is planning a theatrical release for the Polish feature next year, followed by an all-platform roll-out.
The black-and-white drama follows the plight of refugees stranded in the swampy forest land that makes up the Polish-Belarusian border. The refugees, mostly from North Africa and the Middle East, were lured to the border by propaganda promising easy passage into the European Union but became pawns in a geopolitical game, and were stranded between the two countries, unable to enter the EU and unable to return to Belarus.
Green Border premiered at the Venice Film Festival this year, where it won the jury prize. But the film fell foul of Poland’s far-right, with several figures attacking it for its portrayal of Polish border guards and government officials. Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro...

Jessica Chastain responded to the social media frenzy following her romantic red carpet moment with her “Scenes From a Marriage” co-star Oscar Isaac with a reference to the iconic couple Morticia and Gomez Addams from “Addams Family.”
Isaac, who previously voiced Gomez in the 2019 computer-animated film “The Addams Family,” certainly channeled that perpetually frisky character, as he kissed Chastain’s arm during the “Scenes From a Marriage” premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
During the red carpet premiere, Isaac appeared to be enraptured by Chastain, gazing at her and leaning down to kiss her arm, before the two embraced and giggled in front of the cameras. The pair kept up the appearance throughout the premiere, with the two holding hands as they walked and even sharing a kiss.
Several fans did pick up on “Addams Family” reference, one noting “Oscar Isaac channeling his inner Gomez Addams.”

Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain spoke this morning about some of the challenges behind new TV drama Scenes From A Marriage which is debuting at the Venice Film Festival.
Adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s lauded 1973 Swedish miniseries, the HBO mini-series re-examines Bergman’s iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple. Chastain plays Mira, a confident, ambitious tech executive left unfulfilled by her marriage. Isaac is Jonathan, a cerebral and accommodating philosophy professor desperate to keep their relationship intact.
The new drama heralds from acclaimed Israeli TV writer-director Hagai Levi, known for series including In Treatment, The Affair and Our Boys.
Chastain admitted that the project was an intense one to make: “It felt incredibly exposing”, she said. “It was hard to go home and leave it at work. Part of myself was in it.”

Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain grapple with the complexities of love in HBO’s limited series “Scenes From a Marriage,” which released its first trailer. The highly anticipated remake will debut on HBO on September 12.
The original 1973 miniseries was written and directed by legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. “Scenes From a Marriage” traced the story of a wealthy married couple across a decade, from the relationship’s demise to its reconciliation and beyond. The series was based on Bergman’s own relationship with muse and partner Liv Ullmann, who toplined the original with Erland Josephson, to whom he was married to from 1965 to 1970. In 1974, the original was condensed from its six parts to a three-hour movie for an American release.
The modern-day iteration of the series is co-created, written and directed by Hagai Levi, the co-creator and writer behind the Golden Globe-winning series “The Affair,” which also explored a tumultuous marriage.

HBO really wants you to look forward to their content this year. To that end, the network recently dropped a Trailer for their impending 2021 shows. There’s a bunch of interesting ones, but chief among them is a miniseries remake of the Ingmar Bergman classic Scenes From a Marriage. Much like the Swedish original aired as several episodes on television, so too will this one. Here, Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac will be the couple at the center of the event series. Those two obviously have worked together before, notably in A Most Violent Year, so watching them duke it out again is going to be a real treat. Variety had this to say, when reporting on the miniseries last year, back when it was Michelle Williams opposite Isaac, as opposed to Chastain: Oscar Isaac and Michelle Williams are attached to star in an HBO limited series adaptation of Ingmar...

HBO has revealed first look footage at its highly anticipated “Scenes from a Marriage” remake, starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. Originally written and directed by Ingmar Bergman, the 1973 miniseries starred Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson as an affluent married couple whose marriage is charted across a decade, from disintegration to reconciliation and back again. The new limited series is co-created, written, and directed by Hagai Levi, who last examined a discordant marriage throughout five seasons on “The Affair,” which he co-created with Sarah Treem. The project marks a reunion for Chastain and Isaac, who led J.C. Chandor’s 2014 film “A Most Violent Year.”

In the category of culture-driven documentaries that focus on film history, a particularly enjoyable subset of that subset is the kind made by noteworthy artists themselves. There’s Martin Scorsese waxing luxuriously on Italian cinema (“My Voyage to Italy”), Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow fanboy-interviewing Brian DePalma for “DePalma,” and now, German filmmaker Margarethe von Trotta (“Hannah Arendt”) taking us on a personal tour of her lifelong admiration for Sweden’s hallowed grandmaster in the playfully inquisitive “Searching for Ingmar Bergman.”
Von Trotta’s connection to Bergman started when she was a young, New Wave-enamored film lover who responded deeply to his 1957 chess-with-Death masterpiece “The Seventh Seal”; she even opens her valentine of a documentary visiting its famed rocky beach setting, narrating the impact of its establishing shots.

Margarethe von Trotta remembers the first time she saw it. It was the early Sixties, and this young German woman — still several years from establishing herself as an actor, and a little over a decade away before The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum (1975) would induct her into the ranks of Das Neue Kino directors — was visiting Paris. She’d heard about this film that Cahiers-crowd cinegeeks had been crowing over, something about a knight who’d lost his faith, a chess game and Death. So von Trotta found a theater that was playing it.

It was more or less inevitable that the centenary of Ingmar Bergman would be commemorated with a reverent film portrait of the legendary Swedish director’s life and work. It’s an investigation in the form of a highly personalized meditation.
It’s also a documentary that bubbles over with anecdote and insight (did you know that “Scenes from a Marriage” was an influence on “Dallas”?). Von Trotta, a directorial legend in her own right, opens “Searching...

The celebration of Ingmar Bergman’s immaculate career continues on his birth centenary. Well-timed with the release of The Criterion Collection’s epic new box set, a new documentary on the Swedish master will arrive. Margarethe von Trotta’s Searching for Ingmar Bergman take an intimate look at the director’s life and career through interviews with some of his closest collaborators and family, including Liv Ullmann; Daniel Bergman & Ingmar Bergman, Jr. (Bergman’s sons); Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel (Bergman’s grandson), Olivier Assayas, Ruben Östlund, Mia Hansen-Løve, and more.
Leonardo Goi said in our review, “In the year of the Swedish master’s 100th birthday, Margarethe Von Trotta wraps a belated, posthumous gift with her Searching for Ingmar Bergman, a portrait of the artist as seen and experienced by a handful of acolytes and former collaborators, who conjure up a communal memoir so affectionate and heartfelt that by the time Searching clocks its 99 minutes,...

On Columbus Day, following An Afternoon with Barry Jenkins (director of Oscar-winning Moonlight and the adaptation of James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk), a discussion led by Darryl Pinckney at Alice Tully Hall during the 56th New York Film Festival, Margarethe von Trotta joined me for a conversation on Searching For Ingmar Bergman.
In the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center green room, we discussed the interviews she conducted with Stig Björkman, Mia Hansen-Løve, Ruben Östlund, Olivier Assayas, Jean-Claude Carrière, Daniel Bergman, and Gaby Dohm. She also shared her thoughts on The Seventh Seal, Winter Light, Fanny and Alexander, The Serpent's Egg, From the Life of the Marionettes, the persona of Ingmar Bergman, a Rainer Werner Fassbinder connection, Eta Hoffmann, and the hour of the wolf.
