Exclusive: It’s been almost 13 years since James L. Brooks last directed a film and looks like fans of the Oscar-winning writer/director will soon have their wish granted as his next project nears production. Sources tell Deadline that not only as 20th Century come on to Brooks’ next film Ella McCkay but that Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Ayo Edebiri, Albert Brooks, Kumail Nanjiani and Spike Fearn are in negotiations to star in the pic.
“As one of the most empathetic dramatists of our time, James Brooks has set the bar across film and television for decades,” said Steve Asbell, President, 20th Century Studios. “From Broadcast News to The Simpsons, Jim is also a foundational element in the bedrock of 20th and we couldn’t be more proud to support him in his long awaited return to the director’s chair.”

Judy Blume has been famously averse to adaptations of her works, particularly of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. But, a half-decade after it was published, a movie version of her beloved novel is heading to theaters.
The story follows 11-year-old Margaret, who is mired in personal anxiety after her family’s move from New York City to the suburbs amid her desire to get her first period. In an attempt to cope with it all, Margaret, who has grown up without religion being raised by a Christian mother and Jewish father, begins to pray for some answers. Since its publishing debut in 1970, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret has become beloved not just among the Blume canon but among all books aimed at adolescent readership. At the same time, it has been restricted or banned by various schools in America because of its subject matter.

50 Years ago Judy Bloom wrote the groundbreaking book Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Over the years Hollywood has come knocking at her door trying to get the rights to adapt the book into a feature film, but she has always turned them down… until now.
The author has finally said yes and has granted the right to producer James L. Brooks, who has developed films such as Big, Say Anything, War of the Roses, Jerry McGuire, As Good as it Gets, The Edge of Seventeen, and The Simpsons.
It was also announced that Kelly Fremon Craig (The Edge of Seventeen) will write and direct the adaptation of Bloom’s book. It’s said that Brooks and Craig are “giddy about how they find themselves in the middle of this opportunity.”

Smart Girls at the Party will attract plenty of bibliophiles with its newest project. The digital network, co-founded by Amy Poehler and owned by Legendary Entertainment, has launched a literary-themed web series called Book Report with Aisha Muharrar, hosted by the titular comedy writer.
In the first episode of Book Report, Muharrar discusses the Divergent book series with comedian and writer Joe Mande. Muharrar unsuccessfully tries to summarize the trilogy’s plot in under 30 seconds, and then surprises Mande with the fact that there are more public libraries in America than McDonald’s. Future episodes of Book Report will find Muharrar discussing books like Harry Potter and authors like Judy Bloom with a variety of guest stars, including Mo Collins and Gillian Jacobs.
Muharrar brings years of writing and production experience (and a love of books) to Book Report. The series’ host has written for The Huffington Post and the animated sitcom Sit Down,...

Shawn Grant Chuck Palahniuk
Chuck Palahniuk’s fans aren’t just loyal, they border on fanatic. People have asked the “Fight Club” author to sign their arms or legs, then gotten tattoos over his signature to make his mark permanent. One man even had the author’s signature carved into his leg with an X-Acto knife. Mr. Palahniuk, who found the extreme show of devotion disturbing, began taking plastic body parts to his readings.

A couple out for a walk, sing the mocking bird song to their baby, as Gibbs (Mark Harmon) used to sing to Kelly. Then hear gunshots and find a woman kneeling over the man's body. Tony (Michael Weatherly) says something very special "is happening to very special agent Anthony Dinozzo today." Ziva (Cote de Pablo) asks who he's seeing Kurosawa? She didn't know he was into Asian women. He's into all women as if she doesn't know! Tony: "Kurosawa's a dude." Ziva: "I certainly did not know you were into Asian dudes." He's the greatest filmmaker, made the Seven Samurai and The Hidden Fortress. Ziva mentions her book being a work of art and Tony asks her if she's got the new Judy Bloom. He always liked 'God Are You there, It's Me Margaret'. Another book comment from Tony, why has he read that particular book. Ziva meant the Declaration...

On "Lawyers, Guns and Money," Hank Moody doing a PSA was a rich concept. It would be akin to seeing if Charlie Sheen is available to talk about the dangers of hookers and blow because, like they say, “The More You Know.”
My worst fear came to fruition on this episode, though, as apparently we have seen the last of Sasha. There are so many things I will miss about her, but two stand out.
Karen prescribed the perfect remedy for Hank’s social malady: get his head out of his ass. Hank lost his charm switch, but it also seemed like he lost something else. I got the feeling that he very easily could have just packed it in and gone off the deep end.
Hank always struck me as the guy who would try anything twice. I don’t think we’ll see him in the ER again any time soon,...
