It’s the last full week in August, but just before Summer Madness segues into Fall Folly, we thought we’d have a go investigating a claim we’ve been hearing asserted with some frequency: that Summer 2017 is one of the best blockbuster seasons in recent memory. We decided to pit it against the 17 other summer seasons this century (yes, pedants, we count the year 2000) to see how it stacks up.
Of course, the several-billion dollar questions are: how do we define “Summer Season” and how to we define the kind of films we want to focus on?

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
Like any filmmaker, Amanda Lipitz is eager for audiences to turn out for her latest project, the Sundance award-winning documentary “Step.” But Lipitz isn’t eyeing big box office bucks or pushing to topple a rival feature; she just wants the inspirational film to get in front of the people who will be most moved by it, even if they can’t afford the price of admission.
Bolstered by similar campaigns — including a popular push for last year’s “Hidden Figures” — Lipitz and her team think they’ve figured out a way to do just that.
The film, Lipitz’s first, centers on a girls-only step team from inner city Baltimore, and chronicles their senior year as they attempt to win one last big competition, prepare for their future, and face personal hurdles. Even in January,...

Men like movies about war; teenage girls like movies about beautiful dying girls finding love. How else to explain the glut of stories about cancer-stricken teenagers, such as “The Fault In Our Stars,” “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” and that early-aughts soapy classic, “A Walk to Remember”? The genre may have traded in Mandy Moore’s squeaky clean appeal for a slightly edgier Shailene Woodley, but the beautiful dying girl remained resolute in her insistence that prince charming never pity her, even as the movie around her urged audiences to do just that.

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
“Everything, Everything” director Stella Meghie, who made her debut with the Canadian production “Jean of the Joneses,” isn’t just being modest when she says she didn’t expect to direct a studio film. The numbers tell us as much: Most female filmmakers struggle to get a second film off the ground, and the number of black female filmmakers in the studio system is vanishingly small.
In fact, Meghie is just one of 16 female filmmakers to have a studio-backed film hitting theaters in 2017 (that includes studio speciality divisions). However, it’s not Meghie who got lucky; it’s MGM and Warner Bros., since she might be the only person who could have made this movie.

Like all labor disputes, the WGA’s strike threat is meant to ensure its members get an equitable share of profits. However, this one contains a particularly potent strain of deja vu. As they did 10 years ago, and even 30 years before that, studios argue that writers want in on a market that doesn’t wholly exist.
The gap between writers’ and producers’ terms are massive: Entertainment lawyer Jonathan Handel crunched the numbers for The Hollywood Reporter and estimated the gap to be somewhere in the region of $350 million. The healthcare issue is particularly staggering, with Variety reporting the WGA’s 2020 projected deficit alone to be $65 million.
It sounds dire. Only this time, the public’s rapidly evolving viewing habits could give writers the upper hand.

We've seen a teaser and an extended TV spot for Jurassic World so far, but not a full length theatrical trailer...until now. Come inside to check out the all new trailer!
Following a series of three incredibly cool posters, Universal has unleashed an incredible new trailer, that will certainly get your blood pumping. Considering the film lands in less than two months, it's nice to finally get a little more "meat" on the trailer and a better feel for the characters and chaos.
Jurassic World is already one of my most anticipated films for the upcoming Summer Season, so I've pretty much been sold since the first teaser dropped last year. I know not everyone was pleased with that trailer, however, and I think today's will help to sell them a little bit more. I can't wait to see how it all plays out. It seems fun and with...

Landing on our list of The Most Anticipated Blockbusters Of The 2013 Summer Season, "Pacific Rim" had been playing a bit cagey until this point, keeping the monsters mostly teased instead of shown, but today Warner Bros. has unleashed a helluva trailer which promises the monster vs. robot mayhem most have been hoping Guillermo Del Toro would be delivering. A lengthy, two minute and thirty second long trailer has dropped and while this originally unspooled to WonderCon and CinemaCon audiences only, the rest of us now get to check it out. It reveals a lot more with Charlie Day going full nerd as the monster expert, more training sessions which involve martial arts for some reason, Ron Perlman (obviously) and like we said, monsters versus robots action. Lots of it. Films with high concepts are always a dicey prospect ("Cowboys Vs. Aliens" anyone?), but Del Toro seems to have nailed the...

As the only brand-new movie in nationwide release, sci-fi adventure Oblivion easily took first place with an estimated $38.2 million. Unfortunately, overall box office was down around 19 percent from the same frame last year, and it now appears that April 2013 will wind up about even with April 2012.Oblivion's $38.2 million start ($5.5 million in IMAX) is the highest non-sequel debut for star Tom Cruise since 2005's War of the Worlds, and it's his fifth-best ever behind that movie and the first three Mission: Impossible outings. It was a bit higher than 2002's Minority Report ($35.7 million), though with ticket price inflation it likely had noticeably lower attendance. Oblivion's solid (but not spectacular) opening can be attributed at least in part to smart scheduling. Bracing for the Summer box office season, studios typically avoid releasing big-budget fare during the month of April; Universal Pictures, however, successfully stretched the calendar in April 2009 and 2011 with Fast and Furious...
