76-year-old Mavis Staples hasn’t run out of songs to sing or stuff to say. Mavis! depicts the legendary singer’s journey across genres and through decades of performances with clips from past and present. Much of Mavis! is spent in the lively and instantly delightful presence of the titular singer. Whether listening to her booming vocals or watching her warmly point and smile at someone in her audience, Mavis Staples makes for an endearing narrator for her own story. Despite the documentary’s lack of extensive details, Mavis! provides a comprehensive look at the vocalist’s life and career, punctuated by insightful talking head tidbits.
Tracing Mavis’ roots from her childhood years in Chicago through her more recent tours and collaborations with Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy, Mavis! looks beyond the music to profile The Staple Singers family and their position in a burgeoning civil rights movement.

On Monday, The Supreme Court sent back to a lower court a case relating to the constitutionality of affirmative action programs in universities. Julian Bond, the chairman emeritus of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, told MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts that some probably believe that affirmative action is no longer necessary due to the election of Barack Obama as the nation’s first black president. He called this notion “simplistic and idiotic.”...

Stephen Colbert spent much of Wednesday's "Colbert Report" unpacking the challenge to the Voting Rights Act that currently sits before the Supreme Court. "The law that banned the silencing of African-Americans is finally coming before our nation's foremost silent African-American," Colbert quipped while showing a photo of Justice Clarence Thomas.
But Colbert reserved most of his jokes for Antonin Scalia, who has caused a stir in intending to vote against the law as he believes it only serves to perpetuate "racial entitlement" for non-whites, and that the name of the bill, the Voting Rights Act, is so welcoming that no one would ever vote against it.
"Yes, you'd have to be an a-hole to vote against that in the future," Colbert said. "Luckily, we have an a-hole who will vote against that in the present."
He also compared lifting sections of the Voting Rights Act to someone asking to lift...

Fifty-two years ago, student leader Julian Bond was a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (Sncc) and leading groundbreaking protests against segregation in public facilities in the South. He never stopped being involved through the decades and in recent years has taught the history of the civil rights movement in universities. Last week, the veteran activist was honored at a star-studded array of comedians, singers and television personalities at a Plaza Hotel Gala in New York City. The evening was not only a celebration of his legacy; it was...

As The Advocate turns 45 years old, they've put up a hall of fame, from Pat Rocco to Dustin Lance Black and everyone in between. It's a great, brief gay history lesson.
A new way to maim myself – a self balancing unicycle. But it would be great to pick up boys. I know I hit on the cute guy at Bridge Day two years ago on the unicycle with the puppy.
Speaker Boehner has appointed National Organization for Marriage founder and author of the anti-gay Manhattan Declaration Robert George to the Religious Freedom Commission, making him a government employee for the next two years.
Cutie (and equality advocate) Josh Hutcherson has been named Breakthrough Performer of the Year by CinemaCon. That's a bit of an understatement after The Hunger Games.
As disgusted as I am by the unsealed Nom memos that showed how they cynically manipulated entire populations of minorities as they opposed equality,...

While the British have endured endless product placement in American movies and television, it’s been largely forbidden in their homegrown entertainment. Now the governing body has introduced a logo that can appear on a program if there is a paid product placement appearing.

How would I feel if I were a brown student at Miller Valley Elementary School in Prescott, Arizona? A mural was created to depict some of the actual students in the school.
Let's say I was one of the lucky ones. The mural took shape, and as my face became recognizable, I took some kidding from my classmates and a smile from a pretty girl I liked.
My parents even came over one day to have a look and take some photos to e-mail to the family. The mural was shown on TV, and everybody could see that it was me.
Then a City Councilman named Steve Blair went on his local radio talk show and made some comments about the mural. I didn't hear him, but I can guess what he said. My dad says it's open season on brown people in this state. Anyway, for two months white...
