We live in a culture heavily influenced by cinema, which makes a big contribution to our perceptions of what is and isn’t normal, as well as our notions of how we ought to treat one another. That’s difficult for those who hardly ever see people like themselves onscreen – or, if they do, see them only in documentaries or worthy films whose primary purpose is to educate. In this context, Linda Niccol’s Poppy is a breath of fresh air. Its heroine will be a real inspiration for other people with Down syndrome, but what’s really important is that she’s somebody whom anyone can relate to, and she’s fun to be around.
That doesn’t mean that life is easy. When we meet Poppy (Libby Hunsdale), her parents have been dead for some years. She lives with her brother Dave (Ari Boyland), who is racked with...

Well here it is, my Top 15 films of 2015. If you’ve ever read one of my end of year lists, you’ll know that my choices tend to be a million miles away from the mainstream; and this year is no different! This year has been Amazing for films, I could easily had penned a list of 52 films – one for each week of the year – but instead I managed to narrow down the choices to 28 films quite swiftly. However, to hit this years target of a Top 15 (for 2015 geddit?) it took a hell of a lot of work. I think this list even surprises me – there’s a number of films that going back over the 508[!] films we’ve reviewed here on Nerdly in 2015, at the time I reviewed them, I didn’t expect would stay with me till the end of the very end of the year. Oh, and...

Blood of Your Blood: Paxson’s Comedy Horror Debut Lacks Bite
Unspooling with all the finesse of a drunken yet trenchant teenager’s expletive laden ranting at an underwhelmingly attended frat party, Madellaine Paxson’s directorial debut, the indie horror comedy Blood Punch, fails to satisfy even as it casts a wide net of genre blending.
Paxson, previously a writer of children’s television fare, directs from Eddie Guzelian’s (The Tigger Movie, 2000) screenplay, but everyone seems oblivious to how adults act and sound, whether or not in the confines of a sometimes ludicrous scenario. Since premiering in 2013 at the Austin Film Festival, the title has picked up its fair share of champions, with several sources praising the film’s wit and originality. Unfortunately, despite its ambitious twists and turns, these inklings of authenticity can be traced to notable elements from a slew of previous titles, and there’s little...

What happens when two children’s entertainment scribes (boasting credits such as The Tigger Movie, The Penguins Of Madagascar, Peter Rabbit, and Kim Possible) collaborate on their first feature film? Obviously you get a kid friendly movie titled Blood Punch, filled with death, guts, murder, betrayal – wait, what? You heard right. Director Madellaine Paxson and writer Eddie Guzelian are ditching all that warm and fuzzy bullshit to bring you their own twisted fairy tale about three rowdy criminals forced to repeat the same deadly day over and over again. It’s like kind of like Groundhog Day – a vile, wicked, royally f#cked up Groundhog Day your mum certainly wouldn’t approve of.
It all starts when Milton (Milo Cawthorne), a shy chemistry wiz, meets Skyler (Olivia Tennet), a criminal looking for the best meth cook she can find. After meeting in Milton’s rehab clinic (where else would you find the best junkies?...

Fright Rags has added four new beautifully dark T-Shirts to their collection that were inspired by covers of the Idw Publishing horror comic series, 30 Days of Night. Also in this morning's round-up: release details for Mickey Keating's Pod and the horror-thriller Blood Punch.
30 Days of Night T-Shirts: In the three-issue comic series 30 Days of Night written by Steve Niles with artwork by Ben Templesmith, vampires roam the frozen landscape of Barrow, Alaska. The town lies 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle, resulting in the sun not rising there (during the Winter Solstice) for 30 days. The vampires take this annual celestial event as an opportunity to wreak havoc on the townspeople.
In 2012, the series returned with 30 Days of Night Volume 1 by series creator Steve Niles and illustrated by Sam Kieth. Volume 2 in the series was released in August of that same year with artwork by Christopher Mitten and Davide Furno.
