From the infamous grandfather paradox to accidentally creating a timeline where Ned Flanders rules the world, there’s an element of existential horror to every single time travel story. However, it seems that most filmmakers prefer to focus on the exciting adventure aspects of these mind-bending yarns, as very few films choose to explore the terrifying personal ramifications of going back in time to mess with events in your own life.
Obviously, there are several exceptions to this “rule,” and one of the most entertaining just happens to be Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber’s sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect, an under-appreciated relic of the 2000s that I think has aged into a much better movie than most folks give it credit for. And now that we have two decades of hindsight regarding time travel cinema, I’d like to take a look back on this weird little flick...

Forget flux capacitors and sports almanacs. Where these underrated time travel movies are going, you don't need mainstream references. This year-hopping corner of cinema may be predominantly dominated by Marty and the Doc's souped-up DeLorean and emotionless machines sent back in time to kill us, but take a deeper look and you'll find a range of stories that take time travel to some pretty unexpected places.
If we were to have our way, this list wouldn't be quite as brief. After all, with the entire space-time continuum at their fingertips, you'd think filmmakers would've put a little more effort into mining time travel for the full mind-bending potential the genre contains. However, as it stands, truly left-field adventures can often seem few and far between.
That said, we're lucky to have a handful of movies that use time and space as a jumping-off point to tell tales that are wild,...

There are a surprising number of horror movies set during World War II. Perhaps because it was such a horrific time for most the World, that horror directors believe it is a good back drop for the genre. This, for whatever reason, usually involves zombies but, unsurprisingly given the title, Ghosts of War centres around ghosts.
We see five American soldiers assigned to hold a French château that was formerly occupied by the Nazi high command. What seems like a relatively easy job, soon turns out anything but as a supernatural presence descends on to the soldiers.
One thing Ghosts of War does feature a lot of is gore. Perhaps because of the subject matter of war,...

July 17 is the weekend that Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” was supposed to open, but in the face of the coronavirus outbreak, the world has folded back on itself like a scene from one of the director’s mind-benders. As infection rates hit new highs in the U.S., theaters postpone or reverse their plans to reopen, and movies that planned to follow “Tenet” scramble to later spots on the calendar.
That leaves streaming platforms and on-demand services to once again pick up the slack, offering a genre-spanning selection of new offerings. There are showbiz documentaries — including one spotlighting Broadway legend Kaye Ballard, and another about animation mavens Spike and Mike — as well as Sundance-blessed indie offerings such as “Dirt Music” (with Garrett Hedlund) and “The Sunlit Night” (starring Jenny Slate).

They've survived the horrors of World War II, but five American soldiers discover a new kind of terror when they encounter a sinister supernatural force at a French Chateau in the new horror film Ghosts of War. Following its June release on DirecTV, Ghosts of War is coming to VOD and Digital on July 17th from Vertical Entertainment, and we caught up with writer/director Eric Bress in our latest Q&a feature to discuss the importance of keeping his period piece historically accurate, filming in Bulgaria, exploring the effects of Ptsd among Veterans, and he also reflected on what he learned from co-directing and co-writing The Butterfly Effect back in the early 2000s.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, and congratulations on Ghosts of War! How and when did you first come up with the idea for this film?

Sadistic Nazis, Ptsd-afflicted Allied soldiers, angry spirits and creepy dolls make for an already-formidable pile of scare factors in “Ghosts of War,” which then topples the stack by loading too many additional elements in the final stretch. This second feature from “The Butterfly Effect” co-director Eric Bress likewise has a trickily structured take on reality. But in this case, it’s closer to the realm of “The Cabin in the Woods” in that the initial, fairly straightforward horror tale is eventually reframed as part of something larger.
It’s the kind of narrative leap that can make or break a film. But here it . Beautifully atmospheric to a point, handsomely produced, “Ghosts” gradually disappoints because its thematic ambitions add more clutter than depth to a story that’s most effective at its simplest. "This ain't right, man. This place is bad juju." Vertical Entertainment has debuted the official trailer for a supernatural WWII thriller titled Ghosts of War, the latest from Eric Bress, a screenwriter and director of The Butterfly Effect - his only other film since 2004. This horror thriller is about five battle-hardened American soldiers assigned to hold a French Chateau near the end of World War II. Formerly occupied by the Nazi high command, this unexpected respite descends into madness when they encounter a supernatural enemy far more terrifying than anything seen on the battlefield. The film stars Brenton Thwaites, Theo Rossi, Kyle Gallner, Skylar Astin, and lan Ritchson. What a cool concept for a freaky haunted house film - take us back to WWII and throw in a double dose of horror in addition to the Nazis. It's worth a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ posters) for Eric Bress' Ghosts of War,...

Then there is Harold Ramis’ Groundhog Day, the film in which Bill Murray’s weatherman, Phil Connors mysteriously finds himself living the same day over and over again. Just as one supernatural war thriller begins to take strides toward production – yesterday brought news that Overlord, Paramount and Bad Robot’s WWII pic, had added Wyatt Russell and Fences breakout Jovan Adepo – Deadline is reporting that Luke Cage star Theo Rossi has climbed aboard Ghosts of War.
There, he’ll join Brenton Thwaites (Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) and Skylar Astin as Kirk, a “God-fearing solider who has no problem killing Nazis but faces inexplicable paranormal events that make him tweaked and unhinged.” Those inexplicable paranormal events are the supernatural fuel driving Eric Bress’ (The Butterfly Effect) wartime thriller. Directing from his own screenplay, it’s understood the Ghosts of War will be summoned before the cameras before the year’s end, so expect one or two additional casting announcements to be made between now and then.

The up-and-coming Brenton Thwaites has developed a taste for supernatural action.
On May 26th, the Aussie actor will be part of the star-studded crew to feature in Disney’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, a suitably swashbuckling sequel that finds Captian Jack Sparrow hunted to within an inch of his life by Salazar, an undead pirate played with great menace by the great Javier Bardem. Thwaites is attached to the part of Henry, a young man traversing the high seas in search of his missing father.
Looking further afield and Variety is reporting that Brenton Thwaites has come attached to decidedly different breed of supernatural action. It’s called Ghosts of War, and follows “five battle-hardened American soldiers assigned to hold a French chateau near the end of World War II. Today is Groundhog Day, where the myth lives on that a groundhog who sees his shadow will doom us to a longer winter than we deserve. Then there is Harold Ramis’ Groundhog Day, the film in which Bill Murray’s weatherman, Phil Connors mysteriously finds himself living the same day over and over again. On a traditional level the movie is a comedy, but it actually touches upon some really dark philosophical themes. It’s estimated by the filmmakers that Phil lives the same day for 10 years.
In honour of Groundhog Day, we’re taking a look back at ten other films that deal with time, memory, dreams, and repeated experiences. While there may be no film that tackles the topic as precisely as Groundhog Day, these...

The one with the plane crash or the one with the bridge? We try to figure out which of the Final Destination movies is the best…
Final Destination is the most existential horror franchise of them all. Its characters don’t get to hope for survival if they can outrun a man with a knife or shoot a zombie square in the head – they’re being hunted by Death itself, and there’s no escape.
The Final Destination franchise masks its incredibly bleak message with bright colors and inventive Mousetrap-style killings, but at heart, they’re about how everyone dies one day, and the whole world is out to get you. Hardly anyone lives to the end of a Final Destination movie; the ones that do generally have to go to extreme measures, and it’s implied they won’t last long beyond the credits.

Filming is expected to start in March of 2014 for a theatrical release in 2015.

Get ready for more shocking news! We’ve just learned that a 2004 sci-fi psychological thriller The Butterfly Effect is getting a reboot! Why? We have no idea. But what we do know is that FilmEngine and New Line-based BenderSpink are behind the upcoming project, and that original writer and director Eric Bress is on board to pen the new script. At this moment still nothing about the possible director, but everything else is pretty much the same. Beside Bress, who’s in charge for a new story, the rest of The Butterfly Effect team will include producers Anthony Rhulen, Chris Bender and Jc Spink, while Paul...

Do you remember when Ashton Kutcher dipped his toe in more dramatic roles? No? Well that’s because the voyage ended right out of the gate prematurely with 2004′s time-travel based thriller The Butterfly Effect.
The mind-bending original was hated by critics (33% on Rotten Tomatoes) but audiences dug it and it endures in fan reputation with a 7.7 rating on IMDb. In comparison, that’s even a better rating than last year’s much raved Looper and 2011′s Source Code.
Perhaps this is why a new reboot is in production, with Variety breaking the news on Thursday. It is unknown if Ashton Kutcher will return but Eric Bress (original co-director and co-writer) is writing the script for FilmEngine and Benderspink, the original producers of the first movie.

Ok, even though I hate it when Hollywood remakes older movies, I can understand why they remake most of them. A lot of them are classic older films that people grew up with and enjoyed. What I don't understand is why anyone in the right mind would want to remake Ashton Kutcher's 2004 piece of shit The Butterfly Effect. That may seem like some kind of internet April Fools joke, but I assure you, it's not.
To make things a little more silly is the fact that the writer and director of the original film, Eric Bress, is writing the remake, so it's not like the script is going to be any better. There's no director attached yet, but I assume he wants to direct it as well.
