Thomas Lawes plays a synth score on screen as a teen drama plays out above – a bold experiment that doesn’t fully work
Director Thomas Lawes is the proverbial one-man band on this modern silent movie. He has not only written, filmed, edited and composed the music, but is also visible playing the keyboards, guitars and drums of the synthwave score in split screen underneath the action, like a funky sign-language interpreter. It’s a kitsch formal quirk that initially adds a kind of distancing effect to this simple urban fable, but it quickly becomes invisible (presumably less so in screenings with live accompaniment).
Ella McLoughlin plays Amaryllis, a sullen, beanie-hatted skater girl living with her alcoholic mum (Liz May Brice). After breaking into a warehouse where waifish drug dealer Roach (Adam El Hagar) is doing business, she manages to worm her way into running errands for him. Taking a cut,...

Hard Boiled Sweets
Stars: Philip Barantini, Elizabeth Berrington, Adrian Bower, Paul Freeman, Liz May Brice, Laura Greenwood | Written and Directed by David L.G. Hughes
Guy Ritchie has a lot to answer for. Following the success of his British gangster flick Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels we’ve had a myriad of rip-offs and wannabes of which Hard Boiled Sweets is one. Taking inspiration from Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and Guy Ritchie’s aforementioned gangster flick, the film weaves together a number of different stories and characters into this tale of seaside gangsters – the trouble is right from the get-go you know exactly where the film is headed and how all the plot threads will come together; watching everything pan out as you’ve already guessed makes for very dull viewing!

Hard Boiled Sweets is hitting DVD and Blu-ray 30th April. It has a great cast which includes Philip Barantini, Elizabeth Berrington, Adrian Bower, Liz May Brice, Paul Freeman and Ty Glaser. In this exclusive clip from the movie, we get to see a particularly nasty Paul Freeman (who i will always knows as Dr. René Belloq from Raiders of the Lost Arc) enforcing his authority!

Grayson and Angel, you have been evicted from the Big Brother house…
Talk about a double eviction.
The two divas were the first two contestants to bite the dust and succumb to the undead. Marky still blames himself, but Grayson could’ve been spared if he had of only listened to Kelly and not the dying Angel in front of him, whose body was rapidly becoming zombified when she begged to be untied. At that rate, I would’ve called it a day, put her out of her misery and lived to see another day. Now, that’s all in hindsight, but still…
Let’s discuss the weasel that is Joplin, who almost got Veronica killed by being a coward and not helping her with their newly zombie housemates. To make matters worse, the bastard had just pleasured himself while watching Veronica shower not even 30 minutes before the attack happened.

When Torchwood's five-part mini-series Children of Earth aired on Britain's BBC One earlier this month, it trended on Twitter faster than Michael Jackson and Harry Potter — not shabby for a show that wore a "hokey Who-lite" label like a Hawthornian badge of shame for its first two seasons.
Tonight, Children of Earth begins on BBC America, and it will become apparent in the first ten minutes that while Captain Jack Harkness may have been in command at the time, this ain't your grandmama's Torchwood.
Children of Earth opens at a blistering pace that doesn't slow down until the last three minutes of the five-day event. The only mention of deceased teammates Tosh and Owen is a battered photograph taped to Gwen's workstation, and the only indication of a time lapse between seasons is that Jack and Ianto have finally begun calling themselves a couple.
Of course, there's not much...

Torchwood: Children Of The Earth Premieres Tonight!
BBC America’s highly popular Sf adventure Torchwood returns tonight and just as it did across the pond, plays five evenings in a row from 9 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. Est, as a mini-series with each previous episode encoring the next night at 8 p.m.
Subtitled Children Of The Earth, this third season of the successful Doctor Who spin-off centers on an ordinary day in which all of the well, children of the Earth stop their childlike activities and in one eerie voice announce to our world’s governments, “We are coming.” Whilst investigating, Torchwood is plagued by past sins as a trap closes around Captain Jack (John Barrowman) and not-so-forgotten events from 1965 threaten to reveal an awful truth. Soon, Torchwood is forced underground, being hunted down as the government takes swift and brutal action. In addition to the regular team,...

Chicago – Everyone with a TV should tune in tonight to one of the best hours of science fiction that the genre has ever seen, the opening night of the five-part “Torchwood: Children of Earth” mini-series. BBC America is broadcasting the Us debut of this five-night event and it is simply incredible, earning every bit of the glowing praise and buzz that has been building in anticipation of its debut.
TV Rating: 5.0/5.0 “Children of Earth” is essentially about the end of civilization. It is about a species - mankind - presented with a horrible situation and how bad decisions in the face of adversity simply add up over time. The sins of the past generation will be visited on the next one. It may sound deep for a sci-fi mini-series, but as any “Torchwood” fan will tell you, this is no ordinary sci-fi show.

Torchwood producer Peter Bennett told Digital Spy about 2009’s Torchwood: Children of Earth.
"Basically from a concept, we wanted to go down the children dilemma route,” he said of the title. “Because this storyline is a subject that's going to affect all the children of Earth, it was a natural title to come up with.”
As for the actual plot, Bennett explained, "It's different to every other year. It's not a story about spaceships, but it's about a government that did a deal with aliens back in the '60s, and they're now dealing with the consequences of that deal when the sins of their past come back to haunt them."
The biggest change is that the third season is a mere five episodes, to be broadcast across consecutive days. "Having done 26 standalone stories, we kind of wanted to take this series to another level and by making it one story over five nights,...

It all changes in 2009 and fans of "Torchwood" have got to be ready. One thing that won.t change, though, is the high standards and quality of writing the series has displayed from the first season. Series newcomer Liz May Brice explained to the official Torchwood Magazine that the most fantastic thing about joining the series is being a part of something that Russell T. Davies (who also created "Doctor Who") has a hand in. "It.s brilliant doing something where Russell.s at the helm because you just have an absolute confidence in the material," Brice said, according to excerpts published by Sci-Fi Pulse. In the third season of the series, collectively known as "Children of the Earth," Brice will provide a bit of tension to the Torchwood trio as an enigmatic government agent whose endgame ...

We recently reported that Torchwood has begun filming its highly-anticipated third season in Cardiff, Wales. In fact, the Doctor Who spin-off was renewed last month and was given a third season order, entitled Torchwood: Children of the Earth. This new season will be a single five-episode story arc, contrary to the regular 13-episode run. The new season will be following the Torchwood team as they head out to their biggest battle yet. In fact, series creator Russell T. Davies promises this season to be “bigger,” “bolder,” and “better” than ever before.
The third season, which Davies says he hopes to be a “gripping” chapter of the series, is now currently in production and BBC has released some details about who’s to appear in the upcoming season.
"This series is one big serial and the most ambitious story we've ever made, and we've got plenty of surprises in store,...
