"There's two kinds of lakes in the South: them that's got Giant Salvinia and them that's about to have Giant Salvinia." What lurks in the inland waters of Texas? An annoying invasive floating fern called Giant Salvinia that is covering the lake. There's Something in the Water is an animated short documentary, only 8 minutes long to watch, examining what's going on with Caddo Lake, the only natural lake in Texas. The short is built around interviews with people who live and work on the lake discussing Giant Salvinia. With the voices of Rick Michaels, Laura-Ashley Overdyke, Tim Bister, Billy Carter, Laura Speight, Howard Leftwich, Henry "Peanut" Lewis, Kizzie M. Hicks, and Jay Webb. Not only is this a fascinating doc about a crazy environmental debacle, but this short has some really funky, fun animation. I also quite like the mix of real footage with animated elements. It's uplifting to hear...

Last week, CBS premiered the new political drama Madam Secretary, which stars Téa Leoni as Elizabeth Faulkner McCord, the U.S. Secretary of State. It's hardly a far-fetched concept, as we've seen three female secretaries of state since 1997: Madeleine Albright, Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton. But it's nonetheless rare to see a fictional universe with a woman in one of the nation's top three positions of political power. (Yep, even in fake realities, politics is a man's game.) And historically speaking, Hollywood has played it as a joke more often than not. So which fictional female presidents, vice presidents...

Kevin Smith blames Jennifer Garner for the end of his friendship with Ben Affleck.
Though Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck have worked on five films together including classics like Chasing Amy and Dogma, looks like the two are no longer close -- and according to Smith, the surprising reason is Affleck's wife Jennifer Garner.
When Yahoo Movies asked noted comic book fan Smith about a potential Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice surprise at this year's Comic-Con and if Affleck was in town, Smith replied that he didn’t know because the two were not "f*cking tight" anymore.

There's your run-of-the-mill goofy guy, there's antic, then there's Josh Gad, who brings it to a new level as Skip, the oldest son on NBC's Thursday comedy "1600 Penn."
Gad, who was hilarious and Tony-nominated as a clueless missionary in the Broadway smash "The Book of Mormon," plays the president's ne'er-do-well son, who treats the White House like a frat house.
"He is a lovable golden retriever-type character," Gad says of Skip. "He wants so badly to do the right thing, and that leads to a lot of trouble."
He and another co-creator, Jason Winer, had long wanted to work together, Gad says. Gad likes the idea of putting a typically dysfunctional family under the 24-hour news glare.
"I think to a certain extent, because the White House has been a closed-off commodity over the years, dysfunction has existed over the years," but people didn't see it, he tells Zap2it.

Sundance is abuzz with the performance of Elizabeth Olsen, who apparently fell out of the same vagina that hatched the Olsen twins. Looks like she took all the talent with her too. But it got me thinking about other showbiz families and what I like to call the Roberts Dichotomy. Namely, Eric and Julia. Both actors, both born of the same genes, and yet, one opens wide her gaping maw and makes gabillions while the other's busy doing B-movies and birthing bigger child stars.
Thing is, I love Eric Roberts. I'll watch The Best of the Best pretty much every time it's on. It's like Rocky for sad lonely kickboxers. It's just strange that Julia gets all the accolades. And so started up a list of other semi-talented siblings overshadowed by the crazy successful brethren/sistern.
Fun Fact: Nicolas Cage, Sofia Coppola, and Jason Schwartzmann are all first cousins. Jason's mother is Talia Shire.

A few weeks ago, Vf Daily’s Ex-presidents Watch reported on plans to turn former president Jimmy Carter’s childhood home in Plains, Georgia, into a national park. And this week, Congress is poised to expand the landmark by 30 acres to include the gas station once owned by Jimmy’s little brother, Billy Carter. Known for his elegant, redneck lifestyle, Billy hosted members of the national media at his gas station during Jimmy’s White House runs, in 1976 and 1980. No word yet on what they’ll be charging for a gallon. In more National Park news, President Bill Clinton’s childhood home in Hope, Arkansas—complete with Clinton’s childhood couch—will soon become part of the system, too.

Back in the halcyon days of NBC's Bob Hope TV specials, the comedy legend would march out a list of the most bizarrely unrelated pseudo celebrities you could imagine.
You'd hear something like, "Join me this Sunday on NBC for 'Bob Hope's All-Star Salute to Existence' with great stars like Loni Anderson, Pink Lady and Jeff, the Upi All-American Football Team, Billy Carter, Steve Reeves and Brooke Shields!"
It looks like World Wrestling Entertainment is shooting for something equally bizarre with its list of upcoming Monday Night Raw guest hosts. Vince McMahon and company plan to continue the guest general manager routine through the end of 2009 and possibly all the way to Wrestlemania 26 next March.Continue reading WWE unveils unlikely list of guest hosts for Raw
