Panama City — Producer Laura Michalchyshyn attended Iff Panama for a 90-minute panel on The Role of Women in a Globalised World, also featuring the Swedish Film Institute CEO, Anna Serner, Brazilian producer Vania Catani (“The Movie of My Life”), and actresses Laura Gomez (“Orange Is the New Black”) and Judith Rodríguez (“Cocote”). The round table was moderated by fest director, Pituka Ortega Heilbron.
Speaking to Variety after the panel, Michalchyshyn talked about the panel and her current projects, including docu “Bobby Kennedy for President,” directed by Dawn Porter (“Gideon’s Army,” “Trapped”), which will world premiere at Tribeca on April 25. It has its global release on Netflix on April 27.
For the series, Porter relied on rare and never-before-seen archival footage – much of it digitized for the first time. Michalchyshyn’s other recent projects include comedy series “Crawford”, with creator/director Mike Clattenburg, and feature documentary “Momentum Generation,” about the surfing world with the Zimbalist Brothers.

Adult Swim just announced that it's given the greenlight to a new scripted, half-hour live-action comedy to arrive later this year. Not to be confused with "Black Nativity," "Black Jesus" is about exactly what the title suggests -- Jesus, played by Gerald "Slink" Johnson, is out to spread love and kindness in present-day Compton, CA, supported by a small band of loyal locals. Aaron McGruder ("The Boondocks," "Red Tails") created the series and will serve as executive producer alongside director Mike Clattenburg ("Trailer Park Boys"). The series also stars Charlie Murphy ("Are We There Yet"), Corey Holcomb ("The Cleveland Show") and John Witherspoon ("The Boondocks"). Adult Swim specializes in animated and live-action series for young adults. Production has already begun on the series in Los Angeles. "The Boondocks," the animated series based on McGruder's comic strip of the same name, will return for a fourth season on Adult Swim on...

Another day, another TV show that's been revived by the Internet. This time around it's Canadian cult fave Trailer Park Boys, which originally ran from 2001-2008. Actors Robb Wells, John Paul Tremblay, and Mike Smith—who play the titular Boys and co-wrote the series' original run—bought the rights to the series back from creator Mike Clattenburg and his co-producers, and plan on filming a season's worth of new episodes. The new episodes will air on Swearnet.com, a web portal created by the three actors. In a shocking breach of TV-revival protocol, the trio of actors ...

With big names like Cronenberg and Polley already announced a couple of weeks ago, it came time this morning to announced the rest of the home team for the Toronto International Film Festival. This morning, they filled in some of the gaps in the Special Presentations, Vanguard, and Real to Reel sections, and at the same time presented the full line-ups for their Canada First! and Short Cuts programmes, the former highlighting feature debuts, and the latter comprised of a whopping 43 Canadian short films running anywhere from 4 to 28 minutes long. We saw the announcements of Maddin's Keyhole and Vallée's Venice Days entry Café de Flore coming from a mile away. Invariably, almost all any given year's Canada's Top Ten list (a prestigious, juried selection of the ten best Canadian films of the year) have appeared somewhere in Tiff's Canadian categories. Alliance Films will release the dramatic thriller Afghan Luke into theatres September, 2011. The film involves two journalists sent to the remote country of Afghanistan in search of a story on Canadian snipers gone bad. What they find is a story on hashish production instead. Then, they get too close to their subject and mayhem ensues, as suggested by the film's first poster. Nick Stahl (Mirrors 2), Colin Cunningham ("Falling Skies") and Torrance Coombs ("The Tudors") are some of the principal cast members starring and those who enjoy war torn thrillers can have a closer look at this title when it releases in a limited fashion through Alliance Films late in September.
