Prior to directing "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" in 1989, Jeremiah S. Chechik had overseen many, many TV commercials, as well as the music videos for Van Halen's "When It's Love" and Hall & Oates' "Downtown Life." Chechik knew the commercial world well, having begun his career as a fashion photographer for Vogue, and having worked as a designer. After "Christmas Vacation," his career flourished, and he turned out many notable, high-profile films like "Benny & Joon," "Tall Tale: The Unbelievable Adventures of Pecos Bill," the English-language remake of "Diabolique," and the sexy film adaptation of "The Avengers." After that, he moved mostly into TV, and has directed dozens of episodes of many, many acclaimed shows.
His movement from music videos into feature films, however, began in an unlikely way, and Chechik credits his big break on a flippant, sarcastic comment made by master director Stanley Kubrick. It seems that Kubrick, when...

Syfy has revealed the official trailer and key art for the second season of Reginald the Vampire, which will premiere on May 8, 2024, at 10 p.m. on Syfy.
Reginald Andres finally got his life together – when he was turned into a vampire.
While he doesn’t fit into the stereotypical expectations of what a vampire looks like – he’s not chiseled or classically handsome – Reginald has found his place amongst an unlikely cohort that includes the cool vampire who sired him, the former vampire chieftain turned unexpected ally (or is she?), and his co-worker/former girlfriend.
A show with a lot of heart and just enough blood, Reginald the Vampire proves the undead life is just as complicated as life itself.
The series stars Jacob Batalon, Em Haine (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Mandela Van Peebles (Mayor of Kingstown), Savannah Basley (SurrealEstate), Marguerite Hanna (Ashley Weeks), Aren Buchholz (Supernatural), and Georgia Waters...

Some of you can check it out in the embed above but it’s geo-blocked, so some of you might not be able to see it, depending on where you are. Don’t blame me, this was Syfy’s doing.

If you like movies about empty-headed dips and their resentful families, then National Lampoon's "Vacation" movies certainly have you covered. Clark Griswold, played by Chevy Chase, is an exemplar -- perhaps the Ur-example -- of a clueless dad obsessed with fulfilling the typical American suburban dream despite a general lack of wit or competence. Clark claims to be an expert in everything, assuring his family that everything will be fine, and yet he displays no acumen or skill, and his family repeatedly witnesses him fail. We sympathize with Clark, however, as many of his failings are the result of bad luck; Clark isn't very good at traversing the daily onus of trivial nonsense, but the world seems cosmically hellbent on punishing him for his incompetence.

Christmas is coming at us faster than Santa’s sleigh, which means ’tis the season for streaming Christmas movies. While there are plenty of family-friendly options for parents — from classics like “A Charlie Brown Christmas” to new entries like this year’s “Spirited” on Apple TV+ — some may prefer a slightly more raunchy selection, which is where 1989’s “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” comes in.
“Christmas Vacation” is streaming on several online platforms, including HBO Max, AMC+, The Roku Channel, fuboTV, Philo, and Sling TV. It can also be rented or purchased on VOD platforms, including YouTube, Vudu, Google Play, Apple TV, and Redbox, for 3.99. In addition, AMC will air the film throughout the next few days at 8 or 10 p.m. Et, including on December 21, December 22, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

Chevy Chase will always be most identified with his hapless dad character from the Vacation franchise, Clark Griswold. While this is ironic given his edgier roots on Saturday Night Live, it can’t be denied that National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation has become an enduring classic, with the film airing over and over whenever the holidays approach. Written by John Hughes, the film is a departure from the racier National Lampoon’s Vacation and its sequel, European Vacation, in that this time the Griswold’s family adventures would be on the tamer side.
Rather than take his family on vacation, this time Clark assembles his relatives for an extended family reunion, with Randy Quaid’s fan-favourite Cousin Eddie returning for a victory lap from the first movie. Once again, the gorgeous Beverly D’Angelo co-stars as Clark’s wife, Ellen, but as usual for the series, the two kids, Rusty and Audrey, have been recast.

“He’s just different than any other vampire I’d ever seen, and any other hero,” says Reginald the Vampire writer Harley Peyton about the titular character of the new Syfy dramedy. “And usually in those stories, he would be the next-door neighbor, the comic relief, the sidekick, but in our story, he’s the hero.” Stars Jacob Batalon (Reginald), Em Haine (Sarah Kinney), Savannah Basley (Angela Hibbert), alongside series director Jeremiah Chechik and Peyton, sat down with Emily Aslanian in the TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine New York Comic Con 2022 suite. They revealed what attracted them to the series, adapted from the Fat Vampire books by Johnny B. Truant, how each character feels toward Reginald and their dynamics with him in the show. “We don’t fall in love with the romanticism of vampires, we sort of poke fun at it,” Batalon said in the video above. “So that’s a great thing.

Film projects fall apart all the time in Hollywood, but it's rare for a movie to get within a month or so of production and abruptly get canned.
This, however, is what happened to "Dallas Sting," which was to be an uplifting account of the first U.S. soccer team, male or female, to win an international tournament. Matthew McConaughey and Kaitlyn Dever were set to star in the film, and "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" director Kari Skogland was working from a screenplay by the "Glow" writing duo of Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch. On paper, this sounded like a terrifically entertaining sports flick. So why did it get shut down six weeks prior to the start of principal photography?

“I think my experiences working on the ‘Spider-Man’ movies has really informed the way I operate on set in the way that I found that the easiest way for us to progress in a shoot is to make sure everyone is happy and comfortable and likes each other,” Batalon said on a panel Thursday as part of NBC Universal’s portion of the Television Critics Association summer tour.
Batalon also said he has learned a lot through the years from watching others on set.

I know what you’re thinking: Wtf Happened to The Avengers? Nothing, it was one of the biggest hits ever. Not so fast – we’re not talking about the Marvel superhero team-up that shot the MCU into the stratosphere. Instead, we’re talking about 1998’s misbegotten remake of the classic British spy series, The Avengers.
On paper, this should have been a great movie. The Avengers was a classic British TV series starring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg as super spy agents John Steed and Emma Peel. Their “will they or won’t they” chemistry influenced everything from Cheers to Moonlighting, and the show still runs daily in the UK. Given that the show was always considered the best Eurospy franchise outside of James Bond, it should have turned into a massive franchise for Warner Bros. The cast was next-level, with Uma Thurman playing Emma Peel, Ralph Fiennes as John Steed,...

This article contains spoilers for the ending of "Seven."
David Fincher's "Seven" had more than one alternate ending, and its third act could have played out very differently had Andrew Kevin Walker's screenplay landed in the hands of another director. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2017, Walker revealed that he originally penned "Seven" when he had a job at Tower Records in New York (a city that helped inspire the nameless one in his script). Jeremiah Chechik, the director of "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," was the first director attached to Walker's script after it was optioned, and as Chechik's comedy pedigree might suggest, he was not looking to make a movie with...

Photo: ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ Introduction What do you think of when you think of the holidays? Putting up string lights? Sledding down snow-covered hills? Angry squirrels jumping out of the newly chopped Christmas tree? Yeah, the last one is definitely an outlier but is just a normal occurrence for the Griswold family. Written by John Hughes and directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik, ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ has become a holiday tradition in many households since its release in 1989. ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ has remained such a classic film thanks to its relatability. The film is so successful thanks to how it finds humor in the mundane aspects of Christmas that everyone finds relatable while also acting as a commentary on the typical struggles of the holiday season. In doing this, John Hughes and Jeremiah S. Chechik created a Christmas classic while setting a new standard for the holiday film.

Go a little bit deeper behind the scenes of David Fincher's iconic thriller, Seven...
Kicking off a new video series, we’re going to be looking at well-known movies, and just quickly digging up some nerdy facts about them that you may or may not know. But hopefully, you didn’t know. We’ll soon find out.
We’re starting with one of our favourite films: Seven.
By the time the movie arrived in UK cinemas at the start of 1996, it was already earning itself outstanding word of mouth, courtesy of its
Us
release. Still, I was one of many who went about watching it the wrong way. I walked into the cinema armed with a mountain of pick and mix, and too much drink (I’ve learned my lesson since), and was expecting a standard
Hollywood
thriller.
I didn’t get one. This was something much more special.

There are occasions where we have sheer luck to thank for the existence of a movie. Take Seven, David Fincher’s atmospheric thriller from 1995; had the studio behind its making, New Line, not sent Fincher the wrong draft of the script, the film may never have been made - at least, not by Fincher, who at that time was still smarting from the experience of making his debut, Alien 3.

David Fincher’s 1995 thriller “Seven,” starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, has a shocking ending that almost didn’t happen due to a mail mix-up.
The cult classic was written by Andrew Kevin Walker, who at the time had optioned the script with “Christmas Vacation” helmer Jeremiah Chechik on board to direct. But Chechik had a different movie in mind and told Walker to rewrite the ending.
[Editor’s Note: Spoilers for “Seven” follow. Proceed at your own risk.]
The movie as we know it ends with John Doe (Kevin Spacey) delivering Detective Mills’ (Pitt) wife’s head in a box. Walker’s reworked version didn’t include that scene. After Chechik moved on from the project, the original version of the script with the shocking twist accidentally landed in the hands of Fincher.
“[Fincher] expressed some interest [in directing], but in expressing his interest to them, had mentioned there was a head in the box,” Walker told The Hollywood Reporter. “And they were like,...

In June 1987, in an interview for The New York Times, Stanley Kubrick spoke glowingly about a series of Michelob beer commercials. “They’re just boy-girl, night-fun,” Kubrick praised, “leading up to pouring the beer, all in 30 seconds, beautifully edited and photographed. Economy of statement is not something that films are noted for.” That piece […]

Chris Columbus chats about how he landed the job of directing Home Alone - and Chevy Chase is loosely involved...
Christmas approaches, and thus one of the five - count 'em! - Home Alone films must be discussed. It is the law.
In this case, it's the original, which was steered by director Chris Columbus to become a huge breakout hit in 1990. It made Macaulay Culkin a star, and Columbus would duly sign up for a sequel.
And yet he very nearly didn't direct the film.
John Hughes wrote and produced Home Alone, and at around the same time, he was putting National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation together. He hired Columbus to work on that, and all was going well. Until Columbus met Chevy Chase.
As he told Chicago magazine, "John Hughes sent me the script for Christmas Vacation. I love Christmas, so to do a Christmas comedy had been a dream.

If Chevy Chase wasn't such a jerk to director Chris Columbus, the 1990 Christmas movie Home Alone might not have become the beloved holiday classic we fondly look back on now. The film is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and Chicago Magazine put together an oral history that revealed a fascinating what-if scenario for its director.
Writer/producer John Hughes asked Columbus, fresh off the abysmal box office performance of a previous movie, if he wanted to direct National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, which Hughes wrote. Columbus recounts the story:
In 1989, I directed Heartbreak Hotel, and it was a disaster. It opened on a Friday, and by Wednesday it was only playing at two o’clock in the afternoon. Around that time, John Hughes sent me the script for Christmas Vacation. I love Christmas, so to do a Christmas comedy had been a dream. I went out to dinner with Chevy Chase [the movie’s star]. Many would consider Christmas Vacation to be a holiday classic. But does it rank up there with It.s a Wonderful Life? Some may think so, but Chevy Chase isn.t among them. In fact, he doesn.t seem to see the sense in comparing the two films. Rolling Stone recently ran an oral history of Jeremiah Chechik.s 1989 comedy Christmas Vacation. It.s full of interesting facts about the production of the film, and leads into the cast's thoughts on the reaction to the movie in the years that have followed its release. Chevy Chase apparently finds it silly that anyone would compare the movie to Frank Capra.s beloved It.s A Wonderful Life. Comparing Christmas Vacation to It's A Wonderful Life is the silliest thing. That film starred the greatest movie actor of all time and the idea that our movie could ever be connected in some...

Jeremiah S. Chechik's Christmas Vacation has become a movie staple of the holiday season in the years since its release in 1989, and it's not hard to see why. The film has more than a few incredibly memorable moments, from Clark's difficulty with the Griswold home's light display, to his epic, foulmouthed rant about his cheap, jelly-of-the-month-club-as-a-bonus giving boss. As awesome and funny as those scenes are, however, they could have been balanced by some nice dramatic sentimentality in the form of a heart-to-heart moment between Clark and his son, Rusty. And it's all Johnny Galecki's fault that they weren't. The cast and creators of Christmas Vacation recently all came back together for a special interview organized by Rolling Stone, and during the conversation Johnny Galecki revealed that he put the kibosh on what could have been a key scene in the history of the film and the franchise,...

We head back to the 80s and 90s to look at eight famous battles between directors and studio executives over a movie's final cut...
If filmmaking is a compromise between art and commerce, then the final cut is often the point in the process where the tug-of-war between the two becomes the most intense. In their desire to make a film more profitable - often after feedback from preview screenings - studio executives will sometimes request re-edits or the shooting of additional scenes. And occasionally, when directors attempt to resist those changes for whatever reason, the resulting tension between director and studio can reach breaking point.
To illustrate the different ways these tussles over a film's final cut can play out, we're heading back to the 80s and 90s. In some instances, the films that emerged from the editing room were considered to be influential triumphs.

Premiering at the recent Toronto Film Festival, The Right Kind of Wrong is a romantic comedy directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik.
Set in Canada, The Right Kind of Wrong follows failed writer Leo Palamino; a man made famous by his ex-wife after she blogged about him on a site called “Why You Suck”. Leo meets the girl of his dreams, only to discover that the very next day she is marrying what appears to be the perfect man.
Leo jumps head first into a battle to win her over and show the whole world why it’s so right to be with a man who is famous for being so wrong.

It’s always interesting to see a Canadian take on a traditional romantic comedy, and The Right Kind of Wrong, based on the book “Sex and Sunsets” by Tim Sandin, is certainly striving to be a worthy successor to its American counterparts. It has all of the elements: good-looking leads; a pretty locale; a candy-coated landscape and fanciful feel…the one (very important) thing it doesn’t have is a well thought out script.
True Blood’s Ryan Kwanten plays Leo, an eccentric writer who’s reeling from the flop of his first novel and the break-up of his marriage to a woman (Kristen Hager) who has spent her down time documenting his flaws on a wildly popular blog called “Why You Suck” that’s now primed to become a best-selling book. She leaves Leo behind in their sad, little apartment and insists that they split custody of their cats...

The sleepy but postcard-pretty town of Pincher Creek, Alberta provides the ideal backdrop for director Jeremiah S. Chechik's decade-in-the-making romantic comedy whose major appeal, according to star Ryan Kwanten, is that it doesn't play like a rom-com.
We spoke to the "True Blood" star about playing the role of Leo Palamino, failed writer, slacker extraordinaire, recent divorcé and suddenly in love with Colette (Sara Canning) - whom he meets At Her Wedding - when the cast was in town during Tiff.
The Right Kind of Wrong, based on the 1987 book "Sex and Sunsets" by Tim Sandlin with an updated screenplay by Megan Martin, follows Leo's single-minded, determined attempts to win over Colette, with the help of her boozy, straight-talking mother, played by a delightfully against-type Catherine O'Hara who told us she had some trouble with the salty dialogue but was game for something new.

Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1993...
What a year 1993 was. It saw the release of Star Fox on the Super Nintendo. Bill Clinton became president. Season three of Deep Space Nine premiered on Us television. UK politician Douglas Hurd visited Argentina. Cyndi Lauper released her album Hat Full Of Stars.
Aside from those earth shattering events, we'll probably remember 1993, in cinema terms, as the year Jurassic Park dominated the box office like an angry Tyrannosaurus. A true phenomenon, its profits doubled those of the second most watched film in 1993 cinemas, Mrs Doubtfire, and almost three times as much as the movie below that - the Harrison Ford thriller, The Fugitive.
But as ever, there was so much more to the 1993 movie landscape than dinosaurs and Robin Williams dressed as an old woman.
