A sudden earthquake rippled through the entire chemical park in Gucheng County, with pipeline leaks triggering constant explosions. Disaster quickly escalates and if allowed to spread, the whole city will soon be razed to the ground. Tasked with putting out the fire, a group of members from the fire rescue station rush to the scene and so begins a race against time to protect and save lives. [Source: Far East Films]

Blake Lively might have been better off swimming with that shark in The Shallows than subjecting herself to the gummy toothlessness of Marc Forster's wet psychodrama All I See is You. Playing a woman blinded as a child and now living with her husband in Bangkok, she undergoes a successful corneal transplant to restore her sight, only to discover that clarity of vision exposes the cracks in her marriage. Or something like that. The Southeast Asian setting has minimal relevance, beyond recalling the Pang Brothers' The Eye. That 2002 horror chiller and its sequels unleashed post-blindness visions of ghostly

Exclusive: Arclight Films’ Asian label Easternlight has picked up international rights to Danny Pang’s upcoming horror film Delusion, starring fast-rising actor-singer Chau Pakho.
Produced by Vshine Brothers and Sun Wei, along with China’s Huace Media Group, the film is being developed as the first title in a franchise.
Huace is handling mainland China distribution, with a theatrical release scheduled for May 2016.
The film comprises three interconnected stories about characters suffering from delusional disorder: a girl who is “seeing things” after an unrequited romance; another girl and her imaginary boyfriend; and an insomniac who is convinced he’s witnessing a girl being tortured by a man living across from his apartment window.
The cast also includes Cheng Yuan Yuan, An Hu, Hong Chen, and a special appearance by Timmy Hung, son of Sammo Hung. Chau Pakho’s credits include Love Is Elsewhere, I Corrupt All Cops and 12 Golden Ducks.

Scott Derrickson's films up to this point have mainly been in the horror genre; in addition to directing such box-office hits as "The Exorcism of Emily Rose," "Sinister" and "Deliver Us from Evil," he wrote the scripts the 2000 slasher sequel "Urban Legends: Final Cut" and the Pang Brothers' 2007 supernatural horror film "Messengers," among others. Which leads one to wonder: will the director's work on Marvel's "Doctor Strange" lead the McU in a more macabre direction than we've previously seen? Try to garner some clues, if you can, from Derrickson's picks for the 10 greatest horror films of all time, submitted to us as part of this month's Ultimate Horror Movie Poll, which ranked the 100 greatest horror films of all time based on votes sent in by more than 100 horror movie professionals. Will the comic book hero's feature-film debut give us a dash of surrealistic color, a la Dario Argento's most-heralded film?...

Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal and, erm, Kangaroo Jack: they all nabbed the box office top spot last decade...
By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.
The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller and quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly towards the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordinained in a marketing meeting somewhere.
Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?

Back in 2004 the Pang Brothers could do no wrong. It's been a long time since they've had a bona fide hit, but back in the day, Oxide and Danny were churning out more gems than eBay. Ab-normal Beauty had more than one trick up its sleeve. Not only was it a companion piece to Danny's Leave Me Alone, in which Ekin Cheng's character kills a girl in a car crash (the same car crash depicted in this movie) but it also stars sisters Race and Rosanne Wong - of 2R pop fame - as lesbian lovers. Jiney (Race) is a photography student. One day on her way to school she witnesses a car crash and, without hesitation, starts taking pictures of the incident. All of a sudden she is experiencing satisfaction like never before and finds herself becoming obsessed with photographing grisly death. Jas (Rosanne) is clearly concerned about her welfare,...

I’ve always been of the opinion that “original material” is overrated, especially in Hollywood. Every great movie ever was based on a book—or at least pieces of stories that came before it. If you take some basic science fiction tropes and make a better movie than anybody else, how is it somehow inferior to something that’s “never been done”? I would much rather watch a familiar masterpiece than a revolutionary load of tripe.
Thus with Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer, a tale of post-apocalyptic class warfare aboard a massive train, which is not only based on a graphic novel (La Transperceneige) but also draws from a number of classic science fiction stories. The dystopian confinement scenario has been done many times (The Matrix,...

The Pang Brothers need a hit. They haven't made a decent movie together since way back in 2006 with fantasy horror, Re-cycle. Their collaborations have always looked the part, but when it comes to storytelling, the Pang Brothers have failed to set the screen on fire. Which brings us neatly to their latest project together, a fire-fighting action thriller called Out of Inferno. Kind of fitting, don't you think? On the hottest day in fifty years, a serious fire breaks out in a busy commercial tower. Keung (Louis Koo), Si Lok (Pang faithful Angelica Lee), and several others are trapped in the inferno. Meanwhile, Keung's older brother, Dai Kwan (Sean Lau), has arrived at the scene and is coordinating the rescue. He'd better hurry up, that beautifully rendered CGI won't stay pretty for long. Unsurprisingly, Out of Inferno is another lacklustre entry in the Pang Brothers cannon. The special effects are pretty enough,...

Stuffed with straw, dressed in rags and left to twist in the breeze, the typical mild-mannered scarecrow may not be built to frighten anything larger than your average feathered pest... but that hasn't stopped these eerie effigies from coming to life in our nightmares. For generations, this image of the harvest has been associated with the darker, colder days to come, so it wasn't long before spooky tales were being spun about evil scarecrows wandering the fields, intent on reaping something more substantial than corn. Cinematic scarecrows have come a long way since the lovable Wizard of Oz character, but some of them might still be looking for a brain... maybe even the one that's still in your skull. Let's look at some of the all-time scariest movie scarecrows ever to stalk the fields by moonlight... “Bubba” (Dark Night of the Scarecrow, 1981) This chilling made-for-tv classic presents one of the...

Though younger audiences might not remember, back in 2002 the Pang Brothers Danny and Oxide were marked for great things after the success of “The Eye”, “Bangkok Dangerous” and other hits. Sadly, while they’ve never been responsible for anything particularly awful, the last decade has seen them slide into the roles of studio film makers for hire, churning out a series of unremarkable and average genre outings. Still, there’s always the hope that the siblings will recapture their earlier form, and most things they’re involved in have at least a spark of promise as a result. And so arrives “Out of Inferno”, a 3D-shot disaster thriller set in a burning office building, with popular pairing Lau Ching Wan and Louis Koo together as brothers (impressively, the film marks their 12th onscreen team-up), and Pang regular Angelica Lee (“Re-cycle”, “The Eye”) as one of the unfortunates trapped by the blaze.

Ah, the wonders of parallel development, that odd quirk that - from time to time - results in two films with remarkably similar premises hitting screens in close proximity to one another. Why it happens is up for much debate - a spike in public awareness around a similar issue triggering interest from multiple quarters, the urge by one producer to beat another to the punch and steal their thunder are the prime reasons - but it definitely happens. Thus Hollywood produces Deep Impact and Armageddon right on top of one another while in Hong Kong right now we have multiple competing firefighter thrillers. In one corner - and releasing first - there are the Pang Brothers with Out Of Inferno, a Lau Ching Wan and...

Director: Danny Pang. Review: Adam Wing. The last time the Pang Brothers scored a hit was in 2006 with fantasy horror yarn, Re-cycle. Their collaborations have fared better than their solo offerings, but with The Detective, Diary and Abnormal Beauty under his belt, Oxide is the more reliable of the two. Danny has made some real clunkers along the way, including snooze-fest Forest of Death and In Love with the Dead. There's no doubting the visual prowess of either brother, but when it comes to great storytelling, fan favourites like The Eye and Bangkok Dangerous are fast becoming distant memories. Psycho-thriller Fairy Tale Killer is written and directed by Danny Pang, in collaboration with Thai director of photography Decha Srimantra (The Eye, Chocolate). In Lau Ching Wan (Mad Detective), Fairy Tale Killer has found a strong lead actor, but Danny also casts Wang Bao Qiang (Blind Shaft), Elanne Kwong (The Child's...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Children's stories walk hand in hand with murder, right? Well they do in Danny Pang's world, and Fairy Tale Killer is the latest in a long line of atmospheric horror movies from the creator of The Eye. It's been a while since he delivered on his promise, but there are plenty of scares to be found in this gruesome crime thriller about a serial killer that finds inspiration in classic fables. Hardly groundbreaking, but the Pang Brothers are due a return to form. Lau Ching Wan (Life Without Principle) stars as the troubled cop on the case, while Wang Baoqiang (Mr. Tree) becomes the deranged killer responsible for the bloody deaths. Elanne Kwong (Love Lifting), Lam Suet, Elena Kong and Joey Meng are along for the ride, and you can catch it in the U.K. sooner than you think. Fairy Tale Killer arrives on U.K. shores October 7th 2013 courtesy of Terror Cotta.

The Pang Brothers' most accomplished film in quite some time still falls short of being legitimately entertaining. Despite some competently staged action and aesthetically pleasing 3D flames, the film is repeatedly hobbled by woefully bad writing that fails to grasp the mechanics of basic storytelling. After a training exercise goes wrong, Keung (Louis Koo) refuses to serve under his older brother, Tai Kwan (Lau Ching Wan) any longer and quits the fire department. Four years later he is celebrating the launch of his new fire security company, based in Guangzhou International Commercial Centre. Meanwhile, his now estranged brother is wrestling with the news he is soon to become a father. His wife, Si Lok (Angelica Lee Sinje), visits her doctor, located in the same building as...

If there were ever any filmmakers out there who have managed to squander more goodwill than have Hong Kong directing duo the Pang Brothers, then I'm not entirely sure who that might be. The Pangs started off strong and quickly built a loyal international following but over exposure and agreeing to a ridiculous pace of work that has the duo attempting to release a solo project each plus a Brothers project every year - a move that has dramatically eroded the quality of each film as they simply don't have the time to prepare properly - has whittled away their support to the point that it's been a while since anyone said, "Oooh, a new Pang Brothers film!" with genuine excitement rather than fatigue that...

Despite its English language title, “Conspirators” is actually the third film in Oxide Pang’s “The Detective” franchise, following up on the 2007 original and 2011 sequel. Somewhat of an unlikely series, given that none of its entries have proved massive commercial or critical hits, this latest entry has also been touted as the last, bringing to an end the saga of quirky private detective Tam, played by superstar Aaron Kwok and joined this time by actor Nick Cheung (“The Beast Stalker”). With Pang taking his usual stylised approach, the film treks its way around Southeast Asia, the plot unfolding in Thailand, Malaysia and Guangzhou as Tam tries to get to the bottom of things. The film kicks off where part 2 left off, with Tam heading to Malaysia to try and solve the mystery of his parents’ murder some thirty years back, an unsolved case which inspired him to become a detective.

What happens when you’re trapped inside a burning building? Judging from the trailer for Danny and Oxide Pang’s “Inferno 3D,” all sorts of horrifying things will occur. The film follows the adventures of several people who are attempting to escape a commercial building after it is engulfed in flames. Although the story itself doesn’t appear to be anything new, the visuals showcased in the clip embedded below are kind of impressive. It’s been a while since I’ve encountered a good disaster flick that mixes both gut-wrenching drama and cheesy theatrics. And while I’m not suggesting “Inferno 3D” is aiming for high camp, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if one of the film’s stars outran a fireball at some point. It may not happen, but the potential is certainly there. Although I don’t have a proper synopsis to share with you at the moment,...

Universe has released a stack of publicity materials for its upcoming 3D disaster flick, Inferno 3D. Directed by Danny and Oxide Pang, who have previously dabbled with the technology to less than inspiring effect in Child's Eye and Sleepwalker, are hoping that third time will prove the charm with this ambitious project. Likewise, Universe in partnership with Bona Film Group, have clearly shelled out some big bucks for this one, not least on the film's big name cast. Pang regular (and wife of Oxide) Lee Sinje joins the increasingly ubiquitous Lau Ching Wan and Louis Koo in just one of their upcoming pairings. Both will also be seen in Universe's other big project, Metamorphosis, together with Nick Cheung. Here, however, the combination of pyrotechnics, practical...

Scouring the booths at Hong Kong Filmart, I saw that local production house Universe was teasing a couple of upcoming projects. The main focus is on the Pang Brothers' Inferno 3D, starring Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Lee Sinje, which should be ready for audiences later this year, but they also showed us a promo reel for their still-shooting Metamorphosis.A notable step-up from Universe's recent slate of unerwhelming thrillers, Metamorphosis looks to be a high calibre, complex action thriller directed by Benny Chan (Shaolin, Divergence) and starring a triumvirate of heavyweight stars in the form of Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Nick Cheung. The globe-trotting production is currently shooting in Thailand, and sees Lau play an ambitious narcotics officer on the trail of a...

Far and away the best thing that Danny and Oxide Pang have produced in recent years is their Bangkok-based cop thriller, The Detective, starring Aaron Kwok. While the sequel was a distinct drop in quality from its predecessor, the fact that Nick Cheung has joined the cast for part three has me actually looking forward to this. Bizarrely the English title of the film is Conspirators, which while hinting at some kind of crime-fighting partnership between Cheung and Kwok, it does unnecessarily disassociate itself from the previous two films. In Chinese the films were called "C grade Detective" and "B grade Detective" respectively, and this pattern appears to be continuing to some degree, with an "A" motif in the Chinese title, though the second character also appears...

Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.
Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.
While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms...

Kim Ji-hoon has emerged as one of South Korea's go-to directors for big, populist entertainment. In an industry that is increasingly trending towards low budget, high return fare - i.e. lots and lots of romantic comedies - Kim is going the other route. Big budget. Big action. Big spectacle. He did it with action-horror Sector 7 and now Kim is at it again with The Tower.Yes, this is essentially a remake of 1974 Steve McQueen star vehicle The Towering Inferno and not to be confused with the Pang Brothers' currently in production 3D Hong Kong effort Inferno. The first teaser for Kim's effort is freshly on the scene and it's got everything you could ask for from such a thing: A great big building and...

I'm not quite sure how they do it, but the Pang Bros keep producing films at an excruciating pace, be it by themselves or in collaborative efforts. I'm not one to complain though, I'm always in for a bit of ultra-stylized Pang wizardry, especially when Oxide is pulling all the string. While Sleepwalkers (Meng You 3D) won't be remembered as Oxide Pang's most exciting effort, the overall quality guarantees a very fine piece of entertainment.Even though Danny Pang (In Love With The Dead, Seven 2 One) made a few solid solo projects, Oxide Pang (Mon Seung, The Detective, The Detective 2, Basic Love, Som And Bank) remains the most talented of the two brothers. Oxide Pang has a certain visual flair that is virtually unmatched,...

When discussing the careers of the Pang Brothers, it doesn't take long before you start repeating yourself. After a couple of promising Thai thrillers, Danny and his twin brother Oxide scored a massive international hit with 2002's The Eye - and, whether working together or separately, have been struggling to match that success ever since. They have come close on occasion. I think there's a fair amount to appreciate in 2006's re-teaming with Oxide's off-screen partner Lee Sinje, Re-Cycle, and their Bangkok-based cop thriller The Detective, starring Aaron Kwok, also has plenty going for it. Outside of these few entries, however, the brothers' prolific back catalogue is largely devoid of pedigree. Despite all this, I still find myself giving the Pangs the benefit of the doubt,...

During the 16th Hong Kong International Film & TV Market (Filmart) (March 19-22, 2012), the Hong Kong production and distribution company Universe announced the big new projects of Benny Chan, who has come back to the explosive modern action genre two years after City Under Siege, and also the Pang brothers (Oxyde and Danny), who signed a 10-year deal with Universe in 2009, and who since have been regularly delivering mostly genre movies like the action fantasy The Storm Warriors and the horror film Child's Eye. Mia Sin, distribution executive for Universe Films, tells us more about these directors' upcoming projects....

Danny Pan, one half of directing duo The Pang Brothers ('The Eye', 'Bangkok Dangerous'), will hopefully return to horror form with his new thriller 'Fairy Tale Killer'. Currently in post-production the Hong Kong helmer's new story, penned by Kam-Yuen Szeto, is based around a serial murderer who appears to using a collection of old fairy tale books as his influence. Ching Wan Lau, Ken Lo, Elanne Kwong, Baoqiang Wang, Yee-Man Man and Kelly Fu all star and you can check out a new poster and trailer from the production below!...

Lau Ching Wan, one of the best actors working in Hong Kong today, is back with the new film Fairy Tale Killer. The film is directed by Danny Pang, who is most famous for the films in which he collaborated with his older twin Oxide Pang, in particular the classic 2002 horror film The Eye. While many of the films from the Pang brothers over the years were disappointing, Fairy Tale Killer may fare better thanks to a strong cast including Lau and award-winning co-star Wang Bao Qiang (Blind Shaft, Assembly, A World Without Thieves), as well as a screenplay from Szeto Kam Yuen who wrote the scripts for some of the best Milkyway Image productions (Exiled, A Hero Never Dies, Expect The Unexpected, The Longest...

Director: The Pang Brothers. Review: Adam Wing. Few filmmakers thrill and frustrate the way The Pang Brothers do. Early collaborations – Bangkok Dangerous and The Eye in particular – were smash hits the world over. Their solo outings have been something of a mixed bag, with Oxide fairing slightly better than Danny. ‘Abnormal Beauty,’ ‘Diary’ and ‘The Detective’ are certainly worth a look, but recent offerings have definitely been more miss than hit. ‘Storm Warriors’ – a sequel to smash hit movie ‘The Storm Riders’ – was a huge disappointment, and over the last few years we have had to endure Hollywood misfire ‘The Messengers,’ as well as 3D infused (should that read infuriating?) features ‘The Childs Eye’ and ‘Sleepwalker.’ Re-cycle was released in 2006, sandwiched between ‘The Eye 2’ and their Hollywood debut; it’s also arguably their greatest achievement. Angelica Lee (married to Oxide and starring in the second of three collaborations with the siblings) is Ting-yin,...

While prolific director Herman Yau has made a name for himself around the world for his grotesque and confrontational horror movies, as well as a string of hard-edged crime thrillers, he wouldn't be most people's first choice to helm a touching romantic drama. And yet with Love Lifting Yau attempts to do just that, albeit with a healthy dose of sports movie thrown in for good measure.Pang Brothers regular Elanne Kwong takes on the demanding yet rather unglamourous role of Li Li, a championship weightlifter who is forced to retire when diagnosed with diabetes. Taking odd jobs to make ends meet she soon falls in with new neighbour Yung (Chapman To), a recently divorced and bankrupted bar owner. Soon enough the couple marry and have...

The Pang Brothers are probably best know as the creators of ‘The Eye’ and ‘Bangkok Dangerous’ but one of their best and more off the wall films in the last couple of years definitely has to be horror thriller Re-Cycle, and you’ll finally be able to get hold of it in the UK next month! Left of centre label Cine du Monde are doing the business on the release front, and you can pick it up on DVD (but alas not on Blu-ray, which is a shame because it has some stunning visuals) from April 23. Synopsis: Ting-yin, a popular author who is stuck with her writing and keeps discarding her ideas. She starts to sense her apartment being haunted. When she steps out of her building, she arrives in a mysterious world where she comes across characters she has created and abandoned. An old man tells her that she...

“Sleepwalker” is the latest solo effort from Oxide Pang, one half of the twin brother directorial duo still best known for their hit 2002 ghost story “The Eye”. The film sees him reteaming with that film’s leading lady, his wife Angelica Lee, this time in a plot dealing with kidnapped children and the always creepy subject of sleepwalking. The film also stars Charlie Young, working for the director again after the ill-advised “Bangkok Dangerous” remake in 2008, along with Huo Siyan (“My Name is Fame”) and Li Zonghan (“Reign of Assassins”), plus Hong Kong character actor favourite Kent Cheng (who memorably starred in a long string of 1980s and 90s classics such as “Run and Kill”, “Dr Lamb”, “Sex and Zen”, and countless others). Angelica Lee plays clothes maker Ziyi, an unfortunate woman plagued by a disturbing recurring dream about a forest where she suspects a body is buried, which finds...

By: Adam Wing. After one too many glasses of wine my girlfriend has decided to start the new-year in typical fashion, so while she lies dying on the sofa it gives me the chance to reflect on another year of Asian cinema. There have been both ups and downs of course, that goes without saying, but the UK has seen some great films released in 2011. Hard to believe after the events that took place in Enfield last August, but things are on the up again and 2012 looks set to be an incredible year for Eastern film fans. So lets take a look back now at the ten films that rocked my world in 2011… 10/ The Detective. Release Date: 11th April. Aaron Kwok stars as Tam, a dim-witted private detective who doesn’t have what it takes to become a police officer. The Chinese title of the film translates to C+ Detective,...
