Exclusive: The legendary 1972 Toronto production of the musical Godspell – a staging that launched the careers of Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, Victor Garber, Paul Shaffer, Andrea Martin and Dave Thomas, among others – will be the subject of a feature length documentary exec produced by Judd Apatow.
“As a bona fide comedy nerd,” said Apatow in a statement, “I’ve long wondered what exactly brought that amazing group of people together to produce not just a fantastic theatrical event, but what came after: Second City Toronto, Sctv, and of course Saturday Night Live – not to mention a host of movies and TV from Splash to The Three Amigos to Schitt’s Creek and Only Murders in the Building. There has always been a tenuous relationship between live theatre and streaming. Some old-school voices in the theatre believe that allowing people to watch stage shows from the comfort of their own homes would disincentivize them from showing up to see shows in person. More progressive voices in the community argue that by giving audiences opportunities to stay excited about theatre in between trips to see shows only makes them more and more excited to see the real thing live and in person.
One company that is looking to bridge that gap is BroadwayHD, which launched in 2015 and has been a platform for filmed theatrical productions and stage-to-screen adaptations ever since. On Thursday, the company announced that it had reached a deal with NBCUniversal to stream a collection of NBC’s live musicals, including “Hairspray Live!”, “The Sound of Music Live!”, and “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” These titles...

“The Glorias,” the biopic celebrating the life and work of activist Gloria Steinem, struggled to get financing from Hollywood because of negative stereotypes surrounding women-oriented projects, according to director, producer and writer Julie Taymor.
“Even with Gloria Steinem’s best-seller, with Julianne Moore attached, with myself, with Gloria being executive producer, it’s perceived as a film for women,” Taymor said at a Tuesday webinar hosted by WrapWomen. “It was still this mentality for projects that are women-oriented that, ‘Eh, I don’t know if I want to spend that kind of money.’
“We got our money not-for-profit from two philanthropists who never give money to movies. … They knew Gloria, she knew them. We went up, we met with them, they gave us the money,” Taymor continued, declining to name the philanthropists because they didn’t want to take credit. “We didn’t get the money out of Hollywood.”

Steppenwolf’s Broadway production of Tracy Letts’ The Minutes is exiting the Cort Theatre, its pre-covid home, with plans to re-open in 2022 at another Broadway venue.
The move signals yet another way the pandemic shutdown has impacted Broadway’s shuffle of theater tenants and reopening schedules.
The Minutes, a political comedy directed by Anna D. Shapiro and starring Ian Barford, Blair Brown, Cliff Chamberlain, K. Todd Freeman, Armie Hammer, Tracy Letts, Danny McCarthy, Jessie Mueller, Sally Murphy, Austin Pendleton, and Jeff Still, began previews at the Shubert Organization’s Cort Theatre on Feb. 25, 2020. The Broadway revival of American Buffalo, orignally set to star Laurence Fishburne, Sam Rockwell and Darren Criss, and the Steppenwolf production of Tracy Letts’ The Minutes are targeting Spring 2021 openings, though producers say the development of a coronavirus vaccine is “essential” to the plans.
Both productions had been scheduled to open during Spring 2020 prior to Broadway’s coronavirus shutdown in March. The casts have not been confirmed.
