The 1993 Western "Tombstone" had a notoriously troubled production that even led star Kurt Russell to help with directing duties, essentially co-directing with credited helmer George P. Cosmatos (the director of "Rambo: First Blood Part II" and father of "Mandy" director Panos Cosmatos). Despite the difficulties filming the story inspired by the exploits of real-life Tombstone sheriff Wyatt Earp (Russell), some of the cast managed to develop friendships, and that includes Russell and the man behind Doc Holiday, Val Kilmer.
In an interview with GQ where he looked back at some of his most iconic roles, Russell shared a fun anecdote about gifts he and Kilmer traded at the end of filming "Tombstone" that happened to be exceptionally in-character for them both. Making "Tombstone" may have been a real pain, but at least they managed to find a silver lining (and created one of the best Westerns of all time).

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral lasted under one minute and took place over 140 years ago. Tombstone, which dramatizes said gunfight, was made just over 30 years ago and already has more mystery to it. We may know who killed who that October day in Arizona, but there’s still some discrepancies over who truly directed 1993’s Tombstone. One thing’s for sure: Michael Biehn knows it wasn’t Kurt Russell…despite what Kurt Russell may say.
Speaking on Michael Rosenbaum on Inside of You, Biehn – who played outlaw Johnny Ringo – tried to once again shut down the rumors that Russell was the true director of Tombstone. “I get so f’in’ tired of people asking me if Kurt Russell directed the movie…Kurt Russell did not direct the movie. Kurt Russell was responsible for getting the movie off the ground. I never would have played Johnny Ringo if it wasn’t for Kurt Russell.

Two shady figures walk into a club, raising the suspicions of Detective Axel Foley. Foley needs help to deal with both men, but the pair of officers keeping an eye on him — Sergeant Taggart (John Ashton) and Detective Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) — don’t trust him. Furthermore, he’s in a public place, which means that his actions could harm civilians.
After his pleading convinces Taggart and Rosewood to help out, Axel approaches one of the potential troublemakers.
“Phillip!” Foley shouts, adopting the stagger and slurred speech patterns of a drunk man as he approaches the confused suspect. Foley continues the act even after the suspect pulls a gun and threatens the patrons, which allows him to get close enough to yank the weapon away.
You probably recognize the above scene as one of the standout moments of 1984’s Beverly Hills Cop, in which Foley shows off his keen detective...

After the success of Ridley Scott’s Alien, the world saw a surge in sci-fi movies centered around blue-collar workers finding themselves up against terrifying creatures, usually in a dark, dank, remote setting. Some of these rip-offs were studio affairs, but a majority of them were made for the home video and late-night cable markets, where the cheap sets and shoddy effects weren’t such big deals. Who among us hasn’t enjoyed a low-budget monster flick that was clearly made for the price of a six-pack? 1989 brought us not one but three sci-fi movies that had at least partial inspiration from Alien and its sequel, Aliens. The latter film’s director, James Cameron, brought us his underwater epic The Abyss, which isn’t a horror film but certainly takes some cues from those earlier movies. Deepstar Six was Sean S. Cunningham’s attempt to bring the slasher movie underwater,...

He’s your huckleberry and also apparently your guide. To mark the 30th anniversary of Tombstone, Val Kilmer, who played gunfighter/dentist/Wyatt Earp Bff in the 1993 western, posted behind-the-scenes footage he shot during the making of the film.
Stamped with “August 26th, 1993”, the footage shows trailers marked “Doc” and “Wyatt”, for lawman Earp as played by Kurt Russell. The footage then shows Russell outside of his trailer, with cameraman Kilmer assuring him, “You’ve arrived! You’re a pro!” Russell then shows photos of himself and the real Earp side by side, challenging the viewer to figure out who is who, even referencing an old Memorex ad just to further date the clip.

Watching it in 2023, one might find themselves a little baffled as to why Martin Brest's 1984 crime comedy "Beverly Hills Cop" was such a massive success. Made for a modest $13 million, "Beverly Hills Cop" caused a sensation, earning over $234 million domestically which is, when adjusted for inflation, closer to $700 million. It made Eddie Murphy a household name and more or less codified an emerging genre of R-rated buddy cop movies that would remain ascendant throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. The success of "Beverly Hills Cop" might confuse people, however, as it seems wildly basic these days. The jokes are not particularly funny, and while Murphy is as charismatic as they come, his Snobs vs. Slobs shtick seems trite and tired.
It seems that "Beverly Hills Cop," however, was merely outstripped by its imitators. In the wave of imitators that spawned, filmmakers pushed the action and the humor to higher and higher degrees,...

In 1993, "Tombstone" assembled a cast for the ages to tell the story of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and the legendary gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The throwback Western, led by Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer -- in what is perhaps Kilmer's best performance -- showcases a lot of tough guys in cowboy hats as it dramatizes real events that took place before and after the gunfight in Tombstone, Arizona, circa 1881. Special effects make the gunfight seem real, but thirty years later, in the age of "Ted Lasso," perhaps the most impressive effect on display in "Tombstone" is the mustaches, not the machismo.
As Earp, his brothers Virgil (Sam Elliot) and Morgan (Bill Paxton), and Holliday come walking over the hill on their way to the Corral, they all sport period-appropriate mustaches. So, too, do their enemies, the red-sashed Cowboys, led by "Curly Bill" Brocius (Powers Boothe) and Holliday's rival,...

Although "Heaven's Gate" is now regarded in some circles as a misunderstood masterpiece, Michael Cimino's lavish box office flop had a lot to answer for at the time. Not only was it blamed for the death of the American New Wave, but it was also seen as the final nail in the coffin of the Western. Released in 1980, the subsequent decade was an especially fallow period for the genre, but at least we got "Three Amigos."
The drought lasted almost exactly 10 years until Kevin Costner's "Dances With Wolves" became a massive box office success and went on to win seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, reinvigorating the oldest and most resilient of U.S. genres once again. Two years after Costner's triumph, Clint Eastwood's harsh but lyrical "Unforgiven" was also a big hit with audiences and won the same big prizes at the Oscars. The Western was back.

The origins of Lawrence Kasdan's "Wyatt Earp" rest within the troubled production of Kurt Russell's "Tombstone". In the early 1990s, Kevin Costner, who was busily branding himself as an all-American hybrid of Gary Cooper and James Stewart, hooked up with "Glory" screenwriter Kevin Jarre to make "Tombstone," an epic film about the legendary, real-life lawman. This would've afforded the ambitious Costner a connection to another red-white-and-blue big-screen icon, Henry Fonda, who'd turned in what was then considered the definitive performance of Earp in John Ford's 1946 classic, "My Darling Clementine."
But Costner, who'd just won Oscars for Best Picture and Director with "Dances with Wolves," disapproved of Jarre's ensemble vision. He wanted his warts-and-all take on Earp to be the film's sole focus. When Jarre resisted, Costner bolted the project and pursued his own telling of Earp's tale.

Sylvester Stallone has had a few franchises over the years – Rocky, Rambo, The Expendables – but he also has a film that should have been a franchise starter, but never received any of the sequels it deserved. That’s the 1986 classic Cobra (watch it Here), which also happens to be the movie The Arrow in the Head Show hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are talking about in the new episode of the series. The 1990s saw the rebirth of westerns. "Dances with Wolves" won Best Picture at the 63rd Academy Awards, as did "Unforgiven" at the 65th. The genre has never returned to the dominant ubiquity it had in Hollywood's Golden Age. However, the 1990s put Westerns on the track to enjoy a healthy presence in 21st-century cinema. One of the most fondly remembered westerns of this decade is 1993's "Tombstone." It's not as meditative as "Unforgiven," or as politically concerned as "Dances With Wolves." No, it's just a good bloody shoot-em-up.
"Tombstone" retells the story of the Earp brothers and the gunfight at O.K. Corral. The story had been told on film before, such as in John Ford's "My Darling Clementine," and transcended into a silver screen myth. When "Tombstone" trotted into theaters just before Christmas day in 1993, families all over the country flocking to see the action Western were probably completely unaware of just how much of a struggle it was to get the film made. The original screenwriter Kevin Jarre ("Glory") had a highly quotable script that he had every attention of directing himself. After Jarre's own screenplay for "Dracula" was nixed by Universal in reaction to Francis Ford Coppola's intention to direct his own version, there was a risk that "Tombstone" would suffer the same fate after Kevin Costner announced that he and Warner Bros. were moving forward with the sprawling epic "Wyatt Earp."
"Tombstone" had the advantage and about six months of lead time, but Costner was sucking up all the oxygen by securing top-tier actors Dennis Quaid and Gene Hackman. Fortunately, Kurt Russell got hold of Jarre's script and quickly signed on...

John Ford may forever be considered the king of the Western genre. However, mimicking his style in the 1990s proved to be costly for writer and first-time director Kevin Jarre. After penning the screenplay for "Tombstone" Jarre was also hired to direct the 1993 Western. But soon after production started, trouble rode into town.
At the time, Entertainment Weekly noted several issues plaguing the film, including a bloated script that didn't match the production time allotted by the studio. Producer James Jacks opined that the novice director was shooting the film like a John Ford Western, outdated for the era. Actor Sam Elliot, who played Virgil Earp, had harsher words for Jarre. "I knew from the third day Kevin couldn't direct," Elliott said. "He wasn't getting the shots he needed."

Despite Quaritch meeting his end in 2009’s Avatar, director James Cameron informed Lang on the set of the original film that his baddie would indeed be back for the eventual sequel. Lang certainly didn’t expect to wait 13 years for the return of his Rda commander, but he never lost hope despite numerous delays and a global pandemic. Quaritch is now a “recom,” which is short for recombinant. The human Quaritch’s DNA and memory bank were basically used to create a clone in avatar form, and all of human Quaritch’s memories were preserved except for those created during his final mission.

John Rambo has had a more complicated journey than most franchise heroes. The blockbuster character, played for the past 37 years by Sylvester Stallone, has symbolized the evils of war, the awesomeness of war, the evils of America, the awesomeness of America, the evils of violence, the awesomeness of violence — sometimes in the same film. He’s come to represent the nation’s complicated views about war, which are at turns condemned and celebrated, often without much concern for continuity or rationality.
Watching the whole “Rambo” franchise is like having a conversation with somebody who has convictions, but isn’t 100% sure what they are. As such, the films are sometimes cartoonishly self-serious, sometimes accidentally amusing, and occasionally — at the best of times — genuine eye-openers.

Cobra, the 1986 cop movie that endorsed lethal force, starred Sylvester Stallone, the biggest box office draw in the world at the time. So it's even more surprising to realize that it was produced by Menaham Golan and Yoram Globus of Cannon Films. Cobra was directed by the late George P. Cosmatos. But if you know Cannon's filmography, then watch Cobra, you'll understand exactly how the film fits into, well, Cannon's canon. Stallone plays a stock character within Cannon's ouevre of 'man who wouldn't take it anymore' films, or in this case, a man who probably never took it, and deals out his own murdery blend of justice. This lieutenant is eager to send the bad guys straight to hell rather than...

Siegfried Rauch, the German actor who portrayed Steve McQueen's ruthless racing rival Erich Stahler in the 1971 classic film Le Mans, has died. He was 85.
Rauch died Sunday night as a result of a fall in his hometown of Untersochering, Bavaria, his agency announced.
Rauch also appeared in the war films Patton (1970), directed by Franklin J. Schaffner; John Sturges' The Eagle Has Landed (1976); George P. Cosmatos' Escape to Athena (1979); and Sam Fuller's The Big Red One (1980).

Man versus Nature, Man versus Beast, Man versus Food; all mythical in status to varying degrees and most represented on the silver screen. Of Unknown Origin (1983) tackles the middle myth with a tongue firmly planted in its giant rat infested cheek and is an obsessive tour through a domestic hellscape.
Released in November by Warner Brothers, and produced in conjunction with some of that glorious Canadian tax shelter money (you’re welcome, eh), Of Unknown Origin only made back a quarter of its $4 million budget. It didn’t wow the critics either, although Peter Weller (Robocop) was singled out for his wry performance as the put upon vermin victim.

One of the legends that revolve around the production of the classic 1993 film Tombstone was that it was really directed by Kurt Russell, even though he was given no official credit. Well, in a recent interview with Val Kilmer, who awesomely played Doc Holliday in the film, he opened up about the film's production and says that "Kurt is solely responsible for Tombstone’s success, no question."
If you don't already know, the film was originally supposed to be directed by late screenwriter Kevin Jarre. He ended up being replaced a month into production because it was an overwhelming task that he just couldn't keep up with and the production fell behind schedule. Jarre was replaced by the late George P. Cosmatos, who was thrust into the middle of a difficult situation and film shoot, and that's where Russell stepped up to the plate and completely took over production.

Did Kurt Russell actually direct the 1993 Western classic “Tombstone” instead of credited director George Cosmatos? That story has followed the film around since its release in 1993, and even Russell himself pretty much said it was true in a 2006 interview. But according to Russell’s “Tombstone” costar Val Kilmer, it’s not quite true. Cosmatos actually did direct it, Kilmer says in a post to his personal blog. But it was Russell who did the lion’s share of behind-the-scenes work that made the film’s completion possible, and he is “solely responsible” for its success. “I’ll be clear,” Kilmer said.

Val Kilmer stops just short of saying Kurt Russell should be credited as the real director of their Western classic Tombstone.
It’s long been debated who deserves credit for directing Tombstone, the 1993 Western hit that surprised everyone, including its studio, with its quality. Starring Kurt Russell as the rugged and slightly amoral Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as the scene-stealing and violent gun fighter, Doc Holliday, the movie opened at the end of 1993, and sucked all the attention from the following year’s much more expensive Kevin Costner-headlined Wyatt Earp. In fact, many speculate that Kilmer could have competed (and maybe even won) an Oscar for Best Supporting actor if the studio had known what they had on their hands.

Not unlike “Poltergeist,” 1993’s “Tombstone” has long provoked discussion about who truly deserves to be credited as director. Kevin Jarre, who wrote the screenplay to the classic Western, was initially set to pull double duty; he was replaced by George Cosmatos after falling behind schedule.
According to Val Kilmer — who, if you haven’t seen the movie, is your huckleberry — it’s star Kurt Russell who most helped bring “Tombstone” into the world.
“Kurt is solely responsible for Tombstone’s success, no question,” wrote Kilmer on his blog yesterday; the unequivocal statement was in response to a question about Russell’s behind-the-scenes role. “I watched Kurt sacrifice his own role and energy to devote himself as a storyteller, even going so far as to draw up shot lists to help our replacement director, George Cosmatos, who came in with only two days prep.

Chicago – How can the innocence of an entire nation be looked upon with nostalgia and tribute? When in 1970, a small village on the island country of Cyprus was the setting for a film company and a major movie star (Raquel Welch).
..where four years after, a war started. Writer and producer George Avraam was one of the creators of “Beloved Days,” a multi-layered documentary that spotlights the making of the 1970 film “The Beloved,” the celebrity involved, and the irony of the impending political changes, in retrospect. “Beloved Days” will be screened at the Chicago European Union Film Festival at the Gene Siskel Film Center on March 9th, 2017. Was there ever a better '80s tagline that "Crime is a disease. Meet the cure?" If you haven't seen Sylvester Stallone's Cobra, you should.
Had Sylvester Stallone had his way, the now cult classic Beverly Hills Cop would have been a much different film. Before Eddie Murphy was cast in the role that would define his acting career, the part of Axel Foley was offered to Sly. Yet the Italian Stallion had other ideas in mind for what he wanted the film to be, so he took it upon himself to rewrite the script, moulding it to suit his strengths as a white-knuckled mortal terminator. As screenwriter Daniel Petrie Jr. told Den of Geek UK, while it was "considered a coup to have written a script to attract a movie star of that caliber," it was nonetheless "a daunting experience."
Stallone proposed a lot of changes.

Want a quality action film, but you only have an hour and a half? Step this way...
Looking back over the genre, action films definitely haven’t suffered from the trend to make everything longer. They’ve always been pretty long, regularly clocking in at over two hours. Perhaps because of all the slo-mo? But while the sweet spot for action classics seems to be the 100-110 minute mark, there are those that have cut the genre right down to basics, and succeeded all the more for it.
Below is my pick of 25 great action films 90 minutes or under. Even more so than other genres, action crosses many other films - picking a pure ‘action’ flick is all but impossible. So below I’ve chosen films that retain action sequences as their main narrative device, and keep the action at the heart of the movie, rather than as a extra.

You love the horror, suspense thriller, action and science fiction films that make up the world of Canadian cult cinema affectionately known as Canuxploitation.
You’ve watched the entire David Cronenberg genre filmography (if not, please do so now as The Brood, Scanners and The Fly are three of the greatest horror films ever made).
You’ve seen Black Christmas and The Changeling and watched a slasher-ific marathon of Prom Night, Terror Train, Happy Birthday to Me and My Bloody Valentine.
You caught up with Cube, the Ginger Snaps series, Splice, Hobo with a Shotgun and WolfCop all while keeping close tabs on the works of Astron-6.
Yet your hunger for Canadian genre film productions and co-productions cannot be satiated.

Is the named director of a film the one who's actually been calling the shots? Here are 11 where a 'ghost director' may have been involved.
It's not that uncommon for a director to take their name off a film, and to leave the moniker Alan Smithee or whatever the current equivalent is behind. However, what's considerably rarer is when a film is released under the name of one director, but it's later revealed or rumored that, actually, other hands were at work, either for a solid chunk or even the entirety of a production. That a film was, for want of a better phrase, "ghost directed."
Granted, some of these stories that we're about to tell have little chance of ever being fully confirmed, but here are some examples of where the helmer of a film has been called into question. They range from instances of the...

Scream Factory recently gifted us genre fans a double dose of creature feature terrors with their Blu-ray releases of the killer rat flick Deadly Eyes and George P. Cosmatos’ hugely underrated deep sea horror film Leviathan. While both films aren’t necessarily well-known amongst more casual fans, it’s great to see Scream put such great effort into their presentations for each of these cult classics.
For those who haven’t seen it before, Deadly Eyes (or Rats)is a rather ridiculous (but wonderfully so) early ‘80s nature-run-amok story that plays up the concerns and dangers of modern urban society by way of roided-out killer rat infestations that have a penchant for human flesh. The film takes its premise very seriously, but it’s the use of Daschunds in rat costumes that has given Deadly Eyes something of an unintentional comedic spin, making for a rather uneven horror film.

Their love story has endured several centuries but their debauched idyll is threatened by the uninvited arrival of Eve’s carefree little sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska) who hasn’t yet learned to tame her wilder instincts.

Ah, Leviathan, the poor man’s The Abyss. Or is it The Thing or The Alien underwater? Whatever the case may be, the fact that a film like this, that owes its existence to an entire list of other monster movies, is still thought about enough to be given the Blu-ray treatment by a company like Scream Factory is a testament to its charm. A low budget contrivance of elements of similar films that “worked”, but still has enough going for it to remain memorable. Is it the cast? That’s one thing that Leviathan has going for it. It may be a low-budget knockoff of Aliens, The Thing, and other monster movies, but they assembled a cast of genre rockstars to play these derivative characters, and play them well. Ernie Hudson, Hector Elizondo, Peter Weller, Daniel Stern, and even Meg Foster and her entrancing blue eyes makeup the cast.

It would be nice to think that, in his final days, Menahem Golan somehow heard about the Tuesday-night screening of Cobra in Wrocław, Poland, last month. The country's biggest film festival, T-Mobile New Horizons, had procured a near-pristine 35mm print of the Sylvester Stallone vehicle from 1986, which Golan produced and George Pan Cosmatos directed. A large, youthful audience turned out expecting some cheesy, dated blast from the past — but while there was no shortage of mocking laughter at many of Stallone and Cosmatos' deadpan excesses, generous applause as the end credits rolled signified genuine appreciation

For the second day of our Stan Winston Week celebration, I wanted to shine the spotlight on another monster movie that I’ve always enjoyed, but it never seemed to get as much love as I thought it should- George P. Cosmatos’ Leviathan. It’s a movie that wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was endlessly entertaining all the same, featuring a top-notch ensemble and tons of wonderfully weird and creepy creature effects created by Winston and his team of artists.
Starring Peter Weller, Richard Crenna, Daniel Stern, Ernie Hudson, Amanda Pays, Hector Elizondo, Meg Foster, Michael Carmine and Lisa Eilbacher, Leviathan was released in theaters everywhere on March 17, 1989 and took a respectable second place for the weekend, right behind Chevy Chase’s Fletch Lives. Today on Trailers from Hell, Alan Spencer revisits the over-the-top 1985 Rambo sequel "First Blood Part II," starring, of course, Sylvester Stallone. Any subtleties or ambiguous notions found in 1982's "First Blood" are blown up real good in this 1985 sequel. Co-written by Stallone and James Cameron, the second film picks up right where the first left off as Rambo is released from prison in order to rescue a squadron of POWs in Vietnam. Directed by George Cosmatos, the explosion-happy picture benefits from stellar tech credits with Tfh guru Mark Goldblatt in the editing bay, an evocative score by Jerry Goldsmith and cinematography from the brilliant Jack Cardiff.
