It’s already been a busy week for the upcoming Cannes film market, with new films from Julia Ducournau, Romain Gavras, and Panos Cosmatos entering the fray. But what about something lighter than those three, which, considering their directors, will all be audacious in their own ways? “Takes One To Know One” may fit the bill there, as Deadline reports that CAA Media Finance and Cornerstone have the upcoming romance ready for sales on the Croisette once the Cannes Film Festival gets underway in eleven days.

It seems that the vampire genre is coming back in style! A once popular subgenre of horror and fantasy movies, the vampire genre became less popular after 2010 and not many filmmakers opted to make such movies anymore. But, it seems that we’re going to see a resurgence of vampire films in the near future. We have already reported on the upcoming vampire flick by Ryan Coogler, we’ve had several such movies recently, and there is another one coming up in 2025. Namely, Italian-Canadian filmmaker Panos Cosmatos is working on an original vampire thriller titled Flesh of the Gods, and it has been confirmed that the film will star Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac!
Panos Cosmatos is best known as the director of the action-horror Mandy (2018), which starred Elijah Wood. The filmmaker is now back after a 7-year break, as his Flesh of the Gods is scheduled to be released...

Flesh Of The Gods, a 1980s LA-set vampire thriller will be directed by Mandy director, Panos Cosmatos – and will star Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac.
Strap yourselves in. Twilight star Kristen Stewart is heading back to the world of vampires – and she’s set to be joined by no less than Oscar Isaac. The duo are uniting for what sounds like a deliciously strange project that stems from the mind of Panos Cosmatos, the celebrated director of Mandy.
The film will be “set in Los Angeles during the 1980s, and the story follows a married couple, Raoul (Isaac) and Alex (Stewart), who descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm of LA.”

Kristen Stewart? Oscar Isaac? Mandy director Panos Cosmatos? Three great flavours that… etc, etc, surely? And indeed, with a little help from producer Adam McKay, it's all coming together, with the stars attached to Cosmatos' latest, a 1980s tale of Los Angeles hedonism and vampire slinkiness.
According to Deadline, Stewart and Isaac will be married couple Raoul and Alex, who, according to the official synopsis: "descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm. When they cross paths with the mysterious and enigmatic ‘Nameless’ and her hard-partying cabal, Raoul and Alex are seduced into a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills, and violence."
To boost the attraction of this one, Cosmatos cooked up the story with Se7en and The Killer writer Andrew Kevin Walker, with the latter cranking out the script. And if you were eagerly anticipating what the Mandy director would do to...

The age of superhero movies is over. The time of the vampire has come. For anyone jonesing for Hollywood to put its muscle behind a new genre fixation these days that doesn't have to do with spandex and leather -- okay, so that definition also applies to vampire movies like the "Underworld" franchise, but just work with me here, people -- the last few years have put an intriguing contender into the mix. The last year alone has seen films like "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," "Renfield," the somewhat underrated "El Conde," and most recently "Abigail" all stake their claim (puns!) to ushering in a renaissance of sorts for everybody's favorite blood-sucking monsters, with high-profile projects like Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu" and the untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan vampire movie still on the way.

Six years have already gone by since the release of Mandy, which instantly became a cult favorite, and it looks like director Panos Cosmatos might finally be almost ready to go into production on another film. While it was announced in 2022 that he would be making a science fiction fantasy film called Nekrokosm for A24 and XYZ Films, that project remains in development. Moving ahead of it is the “hedonistic ’80s vampire thriller” Flesh of the Gods, which has Kristen Stewart (Love Lies Bleeding) and Oscar Isaac (Dune) attached to star.
Variety reports that WME Independent, CAA Media Finance, and XYZ Films will be presenting Flesh of the Gods to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Festival. Adam McKay and Betsy Koch of Hyperobject Industries are producing the film alongside Isaac, who is producing with Gena Konstantinakos through his company Mad Gene Media, which he set up with his wife Elvira Lind.

The 1993 Western "Tombstone" had a notoriously troubled production that even led star Kurt Russell to help with directing duties, essentially co-directing with credited helmer George P. Cosmatos (the director of "Rambo: First Blood Part II" and father of "Mandy" director Panos Cosmatos). Despite the difficulties filming the story inspired by the exploits of real-life Tombstone sheriff Wyatt Earp (Russell), some of the cast managed to develop friendships, and that includes Russell and the man behind Doc Holiday, Val Kilmer.
In an interview with GQ where he looked back at some of his most iconic roles, Russell shared a fun anecdote about gifts he and Kilmer traded at the end of filming "Tombstone" that happened to be exceptionally in-character for them both. Making "Tombstone" may have been a real pain, but at least they managed to find a silver lining (and created one of the best Westerns of all time).

Nicolas Cage is an actor who always performs his all, but arguably his biggest and most intense performance is the one he won an Academy Award for -- that of alcoholic screenwriter Ben Sanderson in "Leaving Las Vegas." The movie follows Sanderson as he tries to drink himself to death in Las Vegas, Nevada, a task that doesn't seem too difficult to anyone who's been there. He ends up involved in a complicated romance with a sex worker named Sera (Elisabeth Shue), which makes his suicidal tendencies capable of causing collateral damage and means he has to try and decide whether or not he wants to fight for his life after all. It's a brutal, heart-wrenching film and performance by Cage, but one scene in particular really left its mark on the actor and everyone who watched him.

After decades spent firmly in the zeitgeist, the pop cultural legacy of "Star Trek" shows up in some unexpected places -- like an episode of Guillermo del Toro's horror anthology directed by "Mandy" filmmaker Panos Cosmatos. In a recent interview with Variety, production designer Tamara Deverell described the process of building the set for "The Interview," an episode of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities" that takes place largely inside a hazy, orange, retro-futuristic room.
Fans of "Cabinet of Curiosities" will remember "The Interview" as perhaps the show's trippiest installment. The hour stars comedians Eric André, Steve Agee, and Charlyne Yi, plus actress (and future "Rebel Moon" star) Sofia Boutella, actor Michael Therriault, and screen legend Peter Weller. In what appears to be a curious slow-burn experiment, a group of disparate people -- including a psychic, novelist, record producer, and astrophysicist -- are gathered together in a drug-filled mansion...

The “V/H/S” franchise was already on death’s door by the time Shudder resurrected it as an annual streaming event in 2021. So it would be inaccurate to blame the warmed-over familiarity of its sixth installment on the fact that Bloody Disgusting has to churn out another feature-length omnibus every October — especially because the freshest and most satisfying of the five shorts that make up “V/H/S/85” comes from series producer David Bruckner, who should be more burned out on the concept than anyone else at this point. Nevertheless, the “Now That’s What I Call Found Footage!”-ification of these horror anthologies has inevitably confronted them with a degree of saminess, an ironic symptom of a process that leaves precious little time for quality control.

Production designer Tamara Deverell was tasked with creating eight different periods and working with eight different directors for Netflix’s “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.”
The anthology series required Deverell, 2020’s artisan award recipient for production design, to tap into her love for building gritty sets and build everything from a brutalist architecture room inspired by her work on “Star Trek: Discovery” to using an old warehouse for an alien autopsy.
Here Deverell breaks down some of her favorite sets from the series.
“Lot 36″
The first episode tells the story of Tim Blake Nelson as Nick Appleton, who purchases the titular Lot 36 from a recently deceased old man and discovers strange items such as a séance table and rare books. However, the Lot also holds dark demonic secrets

This story about “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
It’s enough of a task to create the look for one horror mini-feature, but imagine if your assignment was a total of eight, in the style of “Tales from the Crypt” or “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.” And each had a different director. And none of the stories were directly related to one another. And all were overseen by a beloved Oscar-winning filmmaker whose name alone is a brand. “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” production designer Tamara Deverell knew going in that it would be challenging to serve every vision, with filmmakers as diverse as Jennifer Kent (“The Babadook”), Panos Cosmatos (“Mandy”), Vincenzo Natali (“Splice”) and Ana Lily Amirpour (“A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”) as her just-for-starters roster.

“I’m gonna start with Pig — that’s my favorite movie I’ve ever made,” Cage responded, barely taking a pause to think. “I love Mandy, that Panos Cosmatos directed. I love Bringing Out the Dead, that Martin Scorsese directed. And I loved Bad Lieutenant [Port of Call New Orleans], Werner Herzog. I loved a movie called Joe that David Gordon Green directed.”
Maybe it’s just a matter of his memory, but Cage’s list definitely skews more towards his later career; Bringing Out the Dead, the oldest film on his list by a decade, only came out in 1999. Seriously,...

With only two features and a short film to his name, Panos Cosmatos has nonetheless emerged as one of few true genre auteurs of the past two decades.
And whether you’re down for his particular brand of bleak, psychedelic arthouse horror or not, there’s no denying his dedication to a singular vision of retro-fueled, cosmic mayhem… and a quick survey of his output shows he has a clear preoccupation with certain themes and settings that are truly unique.
All his films are set in what I would describe as a 1980’s dreamscape – like a nostalgic nightmare pulled from the mind of a child that fell asleep in the living room while an Italian horror movie flickered on the television and then turned to static when the clock struck 3am.

Kevin Ignatius and Nick Psinakis’s atmospheric story of abused brothers on the road has minimal plot but is sharply directed
This horror-flecked backwoods Pennsylvanian fable should serve as a useful calling card for writer-directors Kevin Ignatius and Nick Psinakis, who summon up an ambience so oppressive, it’s as if the film is being beamed straight out of the deep, reptilian brain. The atmospherics and the plot’s occultish trimmings feel somewhat indebted to Panos Cosmatos’s 2018 film Mandy but this is an undeniably sharp technical exercise, in spite of its obvious shoestring budget.
A nerve-jangling prologue sees dark-haired siblings Henry (Carter O’Donnell) and Jacob (Brady O’Donnell) cable-tie their abusive father Duane (Michael Thyer) to a bed and abscond from his cabin on BMXs. They’ve got good reason: in one river-bathing scene, we see he once branded Henry with a clothes iron. After a tipoff from a gardening customer,...

When "Tombstone" trotted into theaters just before Christmas day in 1993, families all over the country flocking to see the action Western were probably completely unaware of just how much of a struggle it was to get the film made. The original screenwriter Kevin Jarre ("Glory") had a highly quotable script that he had every attention of directing himself. After Jarre's own screenplay for "Dracula" was nixed by Universal in reaction to Francis Ford Coppola's intention to direct his own version, there was a risk that "Tombstone" would suffer the same fate after Kevin Costner announced that he and Warner Bros. were moving forward with the sprawling epic "Wyatt Earp."
"Tombstone" had the advantage and about six months of lead time, but Costner was sucking up all the oxygen by securing top-tier actors Dennis Quaid and Gene Hackman. Fortunately, Kurt Russell got hold of Jarre's script and quickly signed on...

Following part one of our 2023 preview, we’re counting down our 50 most-anticipated films of the year.
50. Emmanuelle (Audry Diwan)
After winning the coveted Golden Lion at the 2021 Venice Film Festival with an adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning author Annie Ernaux’s Happening, Audrey Diwan is adapting the erotic novel Emmanuelle with Léa Seydoux tapped to star. The film will convey the sexual journey of a young woman who has intimate encounters with men and women in a series of erotic fantasies, making for a contemplative look at the aesthetics of desire. Diwan has an innate talent in adapting decades-old narratives and making them resonate with striking alacrity, and in a media landscape that is becoming more censorious, Emmanuelle should be a balm. – Margaret R.
49. I Saw the TV Glow (Jane Schoenbrun)

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities — a marvelous compendium of streaming deadtime stories — emphasizes everything that lures me to horror anthologies. It feels like a reinvention of Showtime’s Masters of Horror, highlighting everything I appreciate about the format. One might balk at calling Cabinet of Curiosities an outright horror anthology, more a miniseries? Still, the decadently morbid and dazzlingly darkened atmosphere under del Toro’s oversight draws rich atmospheric throughlines. Del Toro’s program calls to mind grim grab bags like A Christmas Horror Story, the V/H/S series, Southbound, and all the subgenre classics fans already laud.
If you think horror anthologies are just scattered collections of short-form storytelling and that’s all, consider yourself open to reeducation. Horror anthologies are often maligned because — like other subgenres such as found footage — horror anthologies can become fallback “easy to make” titles. Individual scripts only need to stretch minutes versus hours,...

At this point, saying that 2022 has been a good year for TV would be like saying water is wet. There's more TV than ever before, which means that if you thought it was anything but a great year for the medium, you simply haven't been watching enough of the good stuff. We're not blaming you, as the total saturation of the format also means it's tougher than ever to decide what to watch. Luckily, we've got you covered with a countdown of the year's best episodes, a list that includes comedies, dramas, fantasies, horror shows, and everything in between.
While some of the year's best shows -- like "Abbott Elementary," "Hacks," or "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" -- aren't represented here, it's simply because their episodes were too uniformly great to choose just one. But the shows that did make the cut each find a way to transport, inspire awe,...

This post contains spoilers for "Adult Swim Yule Log."
A curious phenomenon that has occurred over the past few years is the proliferation of yule log videos. From The Pokemon Company to Shudder and even Michael Bublé, yule log POVs set to relaxing Christmas music have become a major way for companies and celebrities to celebrate the holidays. In 2021, Adult Swim got in on the action, uploading a "Rick and Morty"-themed yule log on YouTube featuring the titular characters sitting by a fireplace and trading jabs.
Given the popularity of this concept, it's no wonder that the network decided to revisit the yule log idea for 2022. However, this year's wouldn't be just a couple of characters sitting around with festive music playing –- in the hands of longtime Adult Swim collaborator Casper Kelly, what starts as a simple yule log video rapidly becomes a surreal horror film about racism,...

Created and executive produced by Guillermo del Toro, the anthology series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities made its debut on the Netflix streaming service last month, the first season of the show consisting of eight episodes that were directed by the likes of Vincenzo Natali (Cube), Guillermo Navarro (Godfather of Harlem), David Prior (The Empty Man), Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night), Keith Thomas (The Vigil), Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), Panos Cosmatos (Mandy), and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook). Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities hasn’t yet been renewed for another season, but del Toro has a list of directors he wants to work with on season 2 if it happens. During an interview with IndieWire, he revealed some of the names that are on that list.
Del Toro said, “I have a list. For example, we tried to get Jayro Bustamente before and he couldn’t because of Covid.

As most are aware, Guillermo del Toro was at one point knee deep in a film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s 1931 novella At the Mountains of Madness, which of course never came to fruition. The project’s origins date back to 2006, and the plan was for the film to be a rated R affair with a big budget and both Tom Cruise and James Cameron on board to produce.
The would-be H.P. Lovecraft adaptation essentially tells of a disastrous Antarctic expedition that encounters unspeakable horrors after discovering ancient ruins.
Several studios ultimately ended up passing on the big-budget project, spelling the end of del Toro’s Lovecraftian dreams. But we’re still asking ourselves… what could have been?
We may never know, but Guillermo del Toro has at least taken to his just-launched Instagram account this week to share some never-before-seen test footage from the project!

Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro unlocks his "Cabinet Of Curiosities" and invites the viewer to behold a nightmarish menagerie of terror. Across eight episodes, ghoulish monsters come to life and worm their way into your brain and inspire nightmares to last a lifetime. Each episode is directed by a different filmmaker, who brings their perspective to the screen. Directors Guillermo Navarro, Panos Cosmatos, Vincenzo Natali, Catherine Hardwicke, David Prior, Ana Lily Amirpour, Keith Thomas, and Jennifer Kent delight in the terrifying and showcase the marvels of horror storytelling.
Whether it's literal monsters or the decay of humanity, "Cabinet of Curiosities" savors the disturbing. It's not only that the series fuels our nightmares with alien invasions and lotion monsters. There are also razor-sharp discussions about our obsession with beauty, greed, and grief that curdle and chill the blood. Gather 'round Del Toro's cabinet and behold the many grotesque wonders kept therein.

Although the Nicolas Cage-led Mandy was critically acclaimed and became an instant cult classic back in 2018, it’s been a while since we’ve heard from the movie’s Italian-born director, Panos Cosmatos. Episodic anthologies in the entertainment age of “content” are a tricky proposition. Crafting unique and compelling narratives is a challenge unto itself, made all the more difficult when creators have to start from scratch every episode… a notion that bucks against modern audiences’ inclination toward serialized stories. If viewers aren’t watching a movie, they want their favorite characters to keep them company for days and days (if not weeks and months). Merely making each episode longer isn’t the answer either, as hourlong anthologies have proven especially hit-or-miss. Where 30-minute entries (like many in “Room 104” and “Roar”) can be quick and cutting, a doubled runtime can result in bloat, banality, or both.
Sure, there are exceptions to the rule. “Black Mirror” became a streaming sensation (albeit after being developed outside of L.A.’s studio system), and “The Twilight Zone” remains the format’s gold standard (released back...

In addition to being a beloved and Oscar-winning director, Guillermo del Toro is also a relentless champion of other filmmakers, from his recent impassioned Twitter defense of Martin Scorsese against a dismissive essay to his years-ago commentary track for his monster movie “Mimic” where he offers an unsolicited and enthusiastic recommendation of the film’s two direct-to-video sequels. So while plenty of other figures might be adept at filling an Alfred Hitchcock-style role as a impresario of ghoulish tales, it feels particularly fitting to see del Toro lend both his name and personality to “Cabinet of Curiosities,” a Netflix anthology series where eight different filmmakers are given around an hour to tell a creepy and/or chilling and/or goopy horror story — primarily set in the past, though presumably that wasn’t a requirement.
This eclectic group of horror and horror-adjacent directors includes material that should be hotly anticipated by genre fans.

Plot: Acclaimed Academy Award-winning filmmaker and creator, executive producer and co-showrunner Guillermo del Toro has curated a collection of unprecedented and genre-defining stories meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror. From macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy, these eight equally sophisticated and sinister tales (including two original stories by del Toro) are brought to life by a team of writers and directors personally chosen by del Toro.

Guillermo del Toro joins the ranks of episodic genre anthology curators like Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling with his “Cabinet of Curiosities.” Del Toro assembles a Murderers’ Row of horror filmmakers for his limited anthology series, each story contained within his ornate oddities cabinet. That singular, eponymous item doesn’t just anchor the anthology but serves as a visual representation of the type of vintage scary story collection that “Cabinet of Curiosities” unfurls.

Guillermo del Toro knows a thing or two about ghosts, ghouls, and monsters, so the idea of the Academy Award-winning filmmaker shepherding a horror anthology series feels too good to be true and is too good to pass up. While del Toro himself doesn't helm any of the short films that are part of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," he does have a hand in writing some. And more than that, he serves as our host, stalking out of the shadows like Rod Serling on "Night Gallery." The filmmaker is no actor, and his introductions are quite stiff — but that's part of the charm. There's something sweet about this lovable artist doing his best to read ominous introductions while decked out in his best black suit, looking like an undertaker having a great time at a wake.

For horror fans, Halloween isn’t just a holiday – it’s a state of mind. While most studios, networks and streaming platforms are fine with dropping most of their new horror content in the month of October, that’s just not enough to satisfy our jones for new tales of terror. I recently listed some of the new and upcoming horror movies to keep watch for – both this month and the weeks and months to follow – and it’s about time we did the same for TV series as well.
October brought us some excellent new and returning horror shows to networks and streamers, from a new season of Chucky to some chilling premieres like Interview with the Vampire, and there are still plenty more rolling out in the coming weeks. When Guillermo Del Toro is at the helm of a horrific nightmare, you know it's going to be peak cinema of the genre, which is exactly why the trailer for his new Netflix anthology event "Cabinet of Curiosities" looks so top-notch.
In the sneak peek at the 4-day horror event coming to Netflix, we not only get glimpses of some truly terrible horror to come from this interesting anthology — including peeling skin and dead bodies reanimated, just to name a few — but we also got a taste of some really exciting cast members who will undoubtedly bring the heat in the eight stories to come. The stars of these horrific tales include "The Babadook" star Essie Davis, "Harry Potter" alum Rupert Grint, "Westworld" star Ben Barnes, comedian Eric Andre, "The Walking Dead" alum Andrew Lincoln, "Climax" star Sofia Boutella, and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" star Nia Vardalos.
