Diverse, awe-inspiring and memorable treasures that have sadly fallen off the radar
The noughties were a tough decade for film music fans. Not only was there the unprecedented loss of four great masters in the form of Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Michael Kamen and Basil Poledouris; the nature of the industry itself began to go through some seismic changes, not all of them for the better.
With the art of film scoring becoming ever more processed, driven increasingly by ghost writers, electronic augmentation and temp tracks, prospects looked bleak. However, this shouldn’t shield the fact that there were some blindingly brilliant scores composed during this period. Here’s but a small sampling of them.

Nothing will ever quite compare to the immortal John Williams and what he has brought to cinema. His sweeping scores and musical accompaniment have become as integral to the films they are featured in as some of the actors on screen. So, having Jurassic World with a different composer feels a little wrong. While Don Davis did his best with Jurassic Park III, Jurassic World is harkening back to Steven... Read More...

Portrait: Art StreiberThough it’s almost hard to imagine a Jurassic Park film without John Williams composing all the music, that’s exactly the situation we had with Jurassic Park III, where Don Davis stepped in. For Jurassic World, director Colin Trevorrow has hired a more natural successor to Williams’ mantle, in Michael Giacchino. The composer who has made us laugh, cry and thrill for the likes of Up, The Incredibles, Star Trek, Super 8 and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is clearly delighted to score the gig, given that he began his big screen obsession making short dino films when he was nine. According to the statement on his hiring picked up by The Hollywood Reporter, Giacchino says it’s “an incredible opportunity to bring full circle the journey of dinosaurs and film that started in my backyard over 30 years ago.”It’s not even Giacchino's first time working in...

In his 30-year career as a composer, Carter Burwell’s film scores have run the veritable cinematic gamut. From composing for Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation., Where the Wild Things Are) to his work being the best parts of the Twilight saga, Burwell’s résumé is sporadic and unconventional, even for a man who makes film music for a living — it’s fitting, given his less-than-conventional roots as a cartoonist for The Harvard Lampoon and later as a vagrant New York punk rocker. Undoubtedly, Burwell’s become best known for the his collaborations with Joel and Ethan Coen. Last week, Sound on Sight ranked the films of the Coen Brothers, so what better way to take over The Big Score than with a similarly themed meditation on their work with Burwell? As much as the Coens’ filmography is defined by their trademark cynicism and wit, Burwell’s compositions are...

By 1975, many acts had walked through the doors of Don Davis's Groovesville Productions offices in Detroit. None of them were quite like this, a band of three related-by-blood African-American brothers who played louder, faster, and weirder than anything anyone in the city that gave birth to Motown had ever seen. They were called Death, and they were—as the New York Times article that more or less announced them to the world more than 30 years after they'd played their last note together put it—punk before punk was punk.
A band of black brothers inventing punk in Detroit only to be discovered three decades after the fact? It sounds, as Henry Rollins says in the opening of a new film about the band's moving, hard-to-believe journey, "like a movie." And so it is...

Throughout the first half of February, the Sound On Sight staff will take a look at the Academy Awards.
Ask any film score buff and he or she will attest that the Academy has always had a contentious history with film composers. Over the last few years, the AMPAS has made a few publicly egregious snubs: Johnny Greenwood for There Will be Blood and Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard for The Dark Knight come to mind. Barring their questionable nominating practice, the Academy has developed patterns of complacent and downright unimaginative selections. Whether it is nominating John Williams for everything (this year saw him nab nods for both War Horse and The Adventures of Tin Tin), or snubbing great scores to difficult films without the benefit of a more prestigious composer (Cliff Martinez this year for Drive), or overindulging international composers (Gustavo Santaolalla winning a second time for Babel,...

Symphony of Hope is a collaboration by 25 of today’s leading Oscar-, Tony-, Grammy- and Emmy-winning composers to benefit Haiti Earthquake Relief. The “Symphony of Hope” begins with an original Haitian melody, then each composer contributes an additional 8-32 bars of music to the piece and then passes it along to the next composer. Among the participating composers are Nathan Barr, Tyler Bates, Jeff Beal, Christophe Beck, Bruce Broughton,...

I think I may have actually felt a little bit of wee come out earlier when we heard the news that the legendary legends (!) from Universal Studios have decided to bring Jurassic Park back to the cinema! They did it with Back to the Future and it as one of the best cinematic experiences I’ve ever had!
We were all geared up for the Blu-ray release but not we find out that it’s coming back to the cinema. I don’t usually like putting up press releases in full because they can often be boring But anything to do with Jurassic Park being remastered and coming to the big screen is far from boring! There’s also a few pics of the full box set which I’ve placed below so scroll down and read on to find out all your need to know about one of the...

Photo: Warner Bros. I was completely out of the loop when it came to Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, a film predominantly known at this point as the worst reviewed movie of the last decade by RottenTomatoes standards. So, when I decided I would follow in the footsteps of my previous look at Skyline and regularly take a look back at movies considered to be among the worst ever that I had not yet seen, there was no better place to start.
In short, yes, this is a bad film. Terrible in fact. Is it the worst? That's all relative to the discussion. Worst in what way? Plot? Characters? Execution? Entertainment? In all honesty, this is a film I would consider a perfect entry in a new age of grindhouse. All I could think of while watching the inexplicable amount of explosions, lack of story and silly predicaments was of Robert Rodriguez...

You know it when you hear it. Or maybe you don’t. But go back, listen again. The music of the movies make images sing, and the maestros behind the notes never get the credit they deserve. Imagine Jaws without those two notes, Jurassic Park without its theme. Steven Spielberg owes most of his best cinematic moments to John Williams.
As do many great filmmakers to many other, lesser-known music makers. But what about those who’ve made not-so-great films that are blessed with scores that belong in something better?
Unsung notes and strings and orchestras, tonight we honor you.
Runner-Up:
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Constantine - Klaus Badelt
Check out the Top 15 below, in no particular order:
The Matrix Reloaded/The Matrix Revolutions – Don Davis
A post-modern score for a post-modern trilogy, the former of which holds of up much better than the latter.

#1 - Gladiator
(Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard)
There has been much heated discussion this week about whether Hans Zimmer can really be called an "influential" composer, but the proof seems to be in the pudding: Zimmer's output from 1999 until now is impressive, and includes first class film scores for thirteen of the highest grossing films of the past decade. It only seems fitting that he would take our #1 spot, and that SCOREcast readers would vote his score, co-written with Lisa Gerrard, to Ridley Scott's epic masterpiece Gladiator as the number one most influential score of the past decade.
But before we get into the analysis of why Gladiator took the top spot on our countdown, let's recap how we got to this point, starting with the beginning of the Top 10 list (click on any title to read SCOREcast analysis from each score, and comments from the SCOREcast readership):...

#6 - The Matrix
(Don Davis)
Don Davis' score to the 1999 science-fiction action film The Matrix is a smartly constructed symphonic score that combines dark and light tones to bring the Wachowski Brothers' vision of not-too-distant-future human enslavement to vivid life.
As a film, The Matrix was unique in that it came along at a time when cinema had become somewhat routine and static. The Wachowski's set the movie-going audience on their head with the visuals and high-concept storyline of The Matrix and really upped the ante in terms of the Hollywood formula. Many films in the same genre are blatantly derivitive of The Matrix aesthetic, and a case could be made that Davis' music had a lot to do with that.
Scored for a large orchestra, and all but devoid of any electronic elements (the score was almost wholly acoustic while the source material handled the electronic vibe), The Matrix...

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0 Chicago – Like a lot of movie fans, one of the first DVDs I owned in the early days of the technology was the revolutionary “The Matrix,” starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano from directors Andy and Larry Wachowski. Not only was this sci-fi action extravaganza an easily re-watchable film but it looked amazing with DVD quality. Of course, HD was developed for movies like “The Matrix,” now available as a stand-alone Blu-Ray release for the first time.
The tenth anniversary edition of “The Matrix” brings the already-influential tale of Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity home in crystal-clear 1080p High Definition with the film’s original 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The impressive audio track is a Dolby TrueHD English 5.1 track and the film also includes French and Italian 5.1 tracks and Spanish and Portuguese 2.0 tracks.

Penka Kouneva was born in Bulgaria, but she's been living in the United States since 1990. During this time, she estabilished herself as one of the most reliable orchestrators in the business. She worked extensively with Patrick Williams and now she's one of the regular orchestrators of Cliff Eidelman, Alfons Conde and Steve Jablonsky. Apart from orchestrating, Penka also started a film scoring career which currently includes titles like Chupacabra Terror, The Third Nail and most recently Midnight Movie.
What could you tell us about your musical education?
My mother was a professor of music theory and analysis at the Bulgarian Conservatory of music. I went to a High School of Music, then to the Bulgarian Conservatory (with a degree in Theory). In 1990, I received Mary Duke Biddle Fellowship for Master's degree in composition at Duke.
I got Masters and Doctorate at Duke University where my teacher Stephen Jaffe was exceptonally supportive and encouraging.

I don't believe I have ever reported the nominees for the International Film Music Critics Association before, but in the spirit of covering more award season news than is probably necessary I figured, "What the hell?" The nominees listed below make up the fifth annual International Film Music Critics Association Awards for Excellence with Wall-e receiving the most nominations including Film Score of the Year, Best Score for an Animated Film, Best Film Composition (for "Define Dancing") and Composer of the Year for Thomas Newman. The other big nominee is Danny Elfman who received the most individual nominations this year with seven: Composer of the Year; Film Score of the Year and Best Documentary Score for Standard Operating Procedure; Best Drama Score for Milk; Best Action/Adventure Score and Best Individual Cue for Wanted ("Success Montage"); and Best Fantasy/Science Fiction Score for Hellboy II: The Golden Army. The International...

Upcoming Film Scores lists the ten most exciting, promising and anticipated film scores of 2009, according to its editor Mikael Carlsson who can't wait to hear what will come out musically of these projects:
1. Avatar (James Horner)
Director James Cameron and composer James Horner are of course best known for the multi-zillion-whatever-megahit Titanic, but they also gave us Aliens in 1986 which stands out as one of the most exciting nailbiter scores in sci-fi history. On that film, Cameron gave Horner a pretty hard time as judging from the composer interview on the special edition DVD, and basically what you hear in the film is the result of a composer writing under enormous pressure. On Avatar, the situation is the complete opposite. A luxury in film scoring today, the total time given to the scoring process on this film will probably exceed one year! Horner is currently working exclusively on this film,...
