Some cliche somewhere said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This has proven to be the case for me and especially when it comes to fan art. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. Bold, colorful, often playful strokes, grounded in character, culture, and period detail, wrapped in an effortless elegance and sense of taste — costume designer John Dunn is one of the most distinctive visual storytellers working in television today. Having come up in the New York film world, working with directors like Martin Scorsese (“Casino”), Jim Jarmusch (“Ghost Dog”), John Sayles (“City of Hope”), Julian Schnabel (“Basquiat”), Jonathan Glazer (“Birth”), and Todd Solondz (“Storytelling”), and after doing the pilot of “Mad Men” for Matthew Weiner, Dunn followed Scorsese into the world of peak TV with the HBO series “Vinyl” and “Boardwalk Empire” — demonstrating his knack for elegant period style and, like he did in “Casino,” capturing, celebrating, and commenting on the excessive of characters at the center of acute cultural moments. Prestige TV has all too often become synonymous with historical recreation, yet no artisan has used their craft to open the...

Westerns always have a welcome, distinctive flavor when they emerge from Australia, and The Legend of Ben Hall looks to be no exception, at least judging from our exclusive clip. Ben Hall has been on the run, and in the clip he arrives to reclaim his young son from the boy's mother. It's a situation that's filled with tension and anger, yet also one that's uncomfortably understandable for anyone who's suffered estrangement from a formerly beloved partner. Here is the official synopsis: After two years on the run, bushranger Ben Hall considers surrendering to the law when his old friend John Gilbert entices him back into the game. Taking on fresh recruit John Dunn, the gang rides again, and before long they become the most...

When Bobby Cannavale turned up midway through the run of Terence Winter's HBO gangster epic Boardwalk Empire, the most surprising thing was that they somehow hadn't worked together before, whether on earlier Boardwalk seasons or during Winter's long run as David Chase's top lieutenant on The Sopranos. The half-Italian, half-Cuban actor has been no stranger to crime stories in his career (including a role on NBC's would-be Sopranos drama Kingpin), but the Boardwalk role of animalistic sociopath Gyp Rosetti (for which he would win an Emmy) was his first time working with Winter, and also with Boardwalk executive producer Martin Scorsese. Now, all three men have teamed up with, of all people, Mick Jagger, for Vinyl, HBO's new Sunday drama, where Cannavale plays Richie Finestra, a '70s record company executive with a great ear and a nose too prone to having cocaine shoved up it. The two-hour...

“The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Into the Woods” and “Inherent Vice” are among the nominees for the 16th Annual Costume Designers Guild Awards, the CDG announced on Wednesday.
So is “Selma,” which ended a 0-for-5 drought and picked up its first guild nomination of the year.
The guild chooses nominees in three separate categories: Excellence in Contemporary Film, Excellence in Period Film and Excellence in Fantasy Film. In recent years the Cdg has typically nominated three or four of the films that will go on to receive Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design – and in virtually every case, they’ve come...

The Costume Designers Guild joined the guild chorus Wednesday morning with a list of nominees across three categories: contemporary, period and fantasy designs. On the list, and finally joining the guild party, is "Selma" from legendary outfitter Ruth E. Carter. It's the first guild mention for the film so far and obviously a warranted one. Carter was joined on the period side by "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Inherent Vice" (yay!) and "The Theory of Everything." Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out what makes "Interstellar" a contemporary film rather than a fantasy film (which is how the art directors classified it). Either way, I'm sure the team is happy to be included. I can't believe, though, that "Mr. Turner" has been excluded from both this list and the art directors'. Though it feels like this kind of thing has happened before, only to be righted by the Academy.

The Art Directors Guild and the Costume Designers Guild have become the latest groups to announce their nominees for 2013. They may not be considered as big or as important as the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, or the Writers Guild, but they are still a pretty good prognosticator for who will eventually take home the Oscar in their respective categories.
The Art Directors split their categories up into Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary Films (along with various TV categories), but the main one of importance here is the Period, where we find the more fanciful, eye-catching designs. Here, we find what was mostly expected: American Hustle, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis, Saving Mr. Banks, and 12 Years a Slave. If I had to venture a guess, I’d say that The Great Gatsby has this one in the bag. There were those who didn’t enjoy the film (I actually found...

Finally the Cdg nominations have been announced, and while they right some of the wrongs made by Oscar and chiefly BAFTA, ample opportunity to reward some really creative and effective costume design has once again been overlooked.
We have indicated at length our views on the Academy and BAFTA’s nominations (Here and Here) so in the interests of not sounding like a broken record we shall stick to the facts. Well, perhaps just the odd observation… Nominations below:

A few weeks ago, Clothes on Film were invited to spend a day at Angels the costumiers. We had a private tour of their hire warehouse, watched tailors and dressmakers at work, then interviewed creative manager Jeremy Angel, son of Chairman Tim Angel about how the business is structured and their plans for future. What we discovered was illuminating. More than just a rental shop for film, theatre and television costume, Angels also provide inspiration to the fashion industry.
Angels was established by Morris Angel in the Seven Dials region of London as a used clothing store in 1840, essentially selling tailors’ samples and excess stock. Soon the store relocated to Shaftesbury Avenue where it became a popular haven for actors to rent costumes. By the time the movie industry took...

A cardinal rule of moviemaking has always been, "Show. Don't tell."
And no one knows this truth to be more paramount than the Costume Designers Guild — these are the people who turn Rooney Mara into Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Radcliffe into Harry Potter. In other words, they've got some serious skills that go far beyond sewing, which is why last night's Costume Designers Guild Awards brought out some of Hollywood's brightest stars to celebrate some of cinema's most eye-catching achievements.
Hosted by funny girl Jane Lynch, the awards ceremony honored costume design excellence by handing out awards in seven categories divided among film, television and commercials.
Winners included:
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" for Excellence in Contemporary Film - Trish Summerville
"W.E." for Excellence in Period Film - Arianne Phillips
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" for Excellence in Fantasy Film - Jany Temime

It’s been all go with award nomination announcements for costume design over the past two weeks. Here is our round-up of the big three: BAFTA, Cdg and Oscar.
First up the BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) Film Awards:
The Artist – Mark Bridges
Hugo – Sandy Powell
Jane Eyre – Michael O’Connor
My Week with Marilyn – Jill Taylor
Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy – Jacqueline Durran
Perhaps the most surprising nomination, even though it shouldn’t be, is Jacqueline Durran for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Overruling the costumers’ chapter vote for Anonymous (Lisy Christl), general voters chose Tinker, Tailor instead – and with good reason. Critic Guy Lodge goes into detail about the film’s costumes in this article, so we’ll not tread on his toes. One...

Okay, so this really is just a brief clip, but totally worth watching. The main draw is Boardwalk Empire’s main stars commenting on their costumes (“You don’t need to tell me how to rock a suit!” – Michael Kenneth Williams) along with a couple of great close-ups of the sewing team. Executive producer Martin Scorsese also provides background, plus valuable insight from the show’s amazing costume design duo, John Dunn and Lisa Padovani.
Clothes on Film has plenty more posts about Boardwalk Empire (primarily Season 1 as we haven’t caught up with 2 yet). Try Here and scroll down. Also, watch us talking about the show in a video for ‘HBO Sessions’.
Boardwalk Empire is released on DVD and Blu-ray on 9th January.

For HBO Sessions part 2, Clothes on Film editor Chris Laverty was invited to discuss the period clothing of Boardwalk Empire. Not difficult to wax lyrical about costume designers John Dunn and Lisa Padovani’s authentic and readable work on the show, especially when said video is shot in a speakeasy style bar and a prohibition cocktail master class is included.
Check out the new HBO Sessions below, and if you have not already seen Boardwalk Empire season 1, order a copy pronto. It’s unmissable television:

There is a man on Boardwalk Empire with even more sartorial presence than Steve Buscemi’s saffron silk gangster Nucky Thompson. Whereas Nucky may stop at red plaid suit and homburg, this man will brave a red topcoat with fur collar and leather buttons, red plaid suit and a bow-tie; he is the man to teach us all that colour and pattern are not only masculine, but the most masculine. He is Chalky White.
Known to many for his career defining turn as Omar on The Wire, in Boardwalk Empire, Michael Kenneth Williams plays a gangster even shrewder and perhaps even more capable. Certainly he is better dressed. Williams’ prohibition era hood does not say much; instead he lets his clothes do the talking. 1920/21, Atlantic City was a time of factions: Irish, Italian, African American, Ku Klux Klan; each division sporting their own uniform or style. Evidently, Chalky is head...

Recently underway on Sky Atlantic, This is Jinsy is one of those comedy shows set in a surreal world of madness that you either get or you don’t. Frequently hilarious and always interesting, from a costume point of view this is retro fancy dress, deliberately mismatched and performance orientated. Yet everything in Jinsy makes sense within its own world.
The island of Jinsy is populated (791 residents) by all manner of weird and wonderful people. The locale has been likened to The Wicker Man’s Summerisle but is spiritually closer to the Village from Patrick McGoohan’s sixties TV series, The Prisoner. Everyone in Jinsy seems trapped there but somehow content. Episode one entitled ‘The Wedding Lottery’ introduces a lot of faces very quickly. All the inhabitants are broadly drawn, however, so relatively easy to fathom.
Justin Chubb as Maven, David Tennant as Mr Slightlyman and Chris Bran as Sporall.

On the eve of Boardwalk Empire: Season 2 commencing at HBO, we have had a chat with the show’s costume designers, Emmy nominated John Dunn and Lisa Padovani about what is in store for dandy gangster Nucky Thompson, sourcing vintage dresses and upcoming trends of the 1920s.
Clothes on Film, Chris: What do you have planned for Boardwalk Empire Season 2?
John Dunn: In Season 2 we will be continuing to explore the decade as our characters and their pasts are further revealed. We are also introducing some of the new currents in fashion as the 20′s begin to unfold and our characters’ situations shift. The big trends of the 20′s are still ahead of us but we will begin to set the groundwork.
In addition, our shop has become very adept at building beautiful women’s pieces from scratch at the speed of light. While it is always exciting...

On Tuesday 13th September, Clothes on Film makes its debut on U.S. television. Specifically, site editor Chris Laverty chats about the amazing costume design of Boardwalk Empire for a documentary entitled ‘The Money Decade’ at 9.45 pm on HBO (may differ for regional variations).
Of course we do not want to blow our own trumpet too much, but this was surely worth a mention. Tune in if you can. It is actually an interesting programme covering Burlesque, the Jazz era and fashion trends of the early 1920s. Apart from Clothes on Film, you will find contributions from Boardwalk Empire costume designers John Dunn & Lisa Padovani, in addition to a few other folk who really know their stuff.
If you miss the show, don’t fret (as if you would); we will upload a YouTube link soon. Also, there is more to come with an expanded version of The Money Decade...

The Oscars might be the night of the stars, but the Costume Designers Guild Awards is the night for the folks who make those stars look so damn good.
The 13th annual event, hosted by the ever-polished Kristin Davis at the iconic Beverly Hilton, honored both established designers and some newer talent, The Hollywood Reporter recounts.
Taking home her sixth award, Colleen Atwood won for her fanciful "Alice in Wonderland" costumes in the fantasy film category.
Jenny Beavan snapped up her first Cdg award, winning the period film category for her royal duds in 1930s-set "The Kings Speech."
Another first-time winner was Amy Westcott, who won the contemporary film race for her show-stopping pieces in "Black Swan."
In the TV category, big winners were Lou Eyrich for "Glee," John Dunn for "Boardwalk Empire" and Cindy Evans for "Temple Grandin."

After that surprising snub by the Academy (not even a nomination) and BAFTA, Black Swan costume designer Amy Westcott has finally been rewarded, with a Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) Award for Excellence in Contemporary Film.
This was a tough category, too. Jeffrey Kurland has hardly been mentioned, apart from by the public, regarding his almost entirely bespoke costumes for Inception. Have the Guild responded to the recent, very public controversy between Westcott and Black Swan contributors Kate and Laura Mulleavy, i.e. Rodarte? Perhaps, yes, and we would not begin to suggest this is a bad thing either. Moreover the effectiveness of the Cdg lies in their broad distinction between genres, e.g. period and contemporary, allowing them to reward grand, noticeable costumes and subtler, more narrative lead design.

The Costume Designers Guild also honored excellence in television at their 13th annual awardsfest Tuesday. John Dunn and Lisa Padovani -- the talented twosome who crafted the costumes for the depression era drama "Boardwalk Empire" -- stopped the two-year winning streak of Janie Bryant for recreating the look of the swinging sixties in "Mad Men." They also beat reigning Emmy champ Joan Bergin ("The Tudors"). The colorful costumes designed by Lou Eyrich for "Glee" won the contemporary prize for the second year in a row. And Cindy Evans, who was snubbed at the Emmys, prevailed for the TV movie "Temple Grandin." Scrupulously period accurate TV drama Boardwalk Empire (recently underway on Sky Atlantic) is set in early 1920s Atlantic City, a then hotbed of political corruption and prohibition racketeering. Not that such a description would be alluded to in the holiday brochures; on the surface everything was salt water taffy and Temperance League matriarchs fighting the good fight.
Via John A. Dunn’s striking costumes, the show broadly ensures that men are the primary objects of exhibition, in particular corrupt county treasurer Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi). This is because women of the era had yet to break away from history’s designated roles of wife, mother, sex object; they had no freedom to choose their path.
Following implementation of the 19th Amendment in the U.S., individual states were no longer able to prohibit women from voting. As Boardwalk Empire gets underway the pilot episode sets a scene of a community on the verge of change,...

Sharply tailored, violent, sexy and all-round immaculate HBO drama Boardwalk Empire hits British screens for the first time on 1st February (Sky Atlantic). For those who have not already seen the show, what will undoubtedly strike first is, thanks to costume designer John A. Dunn, just how beautifully turned out all the gentlemen in 1920’s set Atlantic City were. This is a time when being a real man meant wearing a deep red carnation on one’s jacket lapel and stiff collars to rival a neck brace.
Ruler of Boardwalk Empire is Atlantic County treasurer Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a former policeman turned corrupt politician running an alcohol bootlegging racket during prohibition. What Nucky wears is just as important as anything else he does on a day. Decked in burnt orange plaid single breasted suit, saffron silk shirt with detachable white collar, paisley tie and collar pin, plus two-tone brogues,...

So, the Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) has served up their nominations for this year. Apart from falling short on numbers in a couple of categories, the line-up is predictably safe.
Excellence in Contemporary Film
Black Swan – Amy Westcott
Burlesque – Michael Kaplan
Inception – Jeffrey Kurland
The Social Network – Jacqueline West
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps – Ellen Mirojnick
There has been recent hoopla in the press regarding Rodarte’s overall involvement with the costume design for Black Swan, though the Costume Designers Guild will be unlikely to run scared. Shouldn’t The Social Network strictly be in the Period category, however? Jacqueline West went to extraordinary lengths to ensure the film was historically accurate, something often harder to achieve when the setting is recent.

Black Swan and Burlesque are among the nominees in the contemporary film category, while The Fighter and The King's Speech were recognized for period films.
