Lionsgate has been working on a live-action version of the well-known anime and manga series Naruto for a while now. Despite the fact that the movie was announced in 2015, no significant updates regarding the project have been released since then. The project involved Tasha Huo, the screenwriter of the popular Netflix series The Witcher.

It's not unusual for the movies to come out of manga and anime series to feel a little off. The stories are often non-canon or otherwise abridged adaptations of ongoing story arcs, and the best thing you can hope for as a viewer is that a given movie captures some hint of what you enjoy about the series. While the movies may not hit the heights of the series, they can still deliver excellent character moments and action.
Whether or not the "Naruto" films deliver on that is up for debate. As the manga and anime series focused on the growth and development of its title character, a young ninja in a fantasy world on the path to glory, the movies give him and some of his coterie of allies non-canonical missions on which they can prove their mettle. For a series weighed down with a large number of "filler...

Shōnen manga is Japan's equivalent to American superhero comics, but comes with a few more storytelling advantages. Manga is more creator-driven; instead of different writers and artists rotating shifts on staple characters like at Marvel and DC, mangakas (manga artists) pitch and create the stories for their publisher. While Shōnen manga is primarily comprised of boys' adventure books, they tend to feature different types of adventurers: Shōnen heroes can be pirates, hunters, shinigami, alchemists, or ninjas. Since manga doesn't use a "shared universe" model, the barrier to entry is a bit lower.
Manga doesn't experience the same stasis as American superhero comics. Even if chapters go up into the hundreds, there's a forward progression and, eventually, an ending. Take "Dragon Ball," the godfather of modern Shōnen manga created by Akira Toriyama. Son Gokū is introduced as a child, growing up over the manga's 194 chapters. The manga's rebrand, "Dragon Ball Z,...

With over 250 million copies sold, Masashi Kishimoto's "Naruto" is one of the most popular manga series in the world. Over the past 20 years, the famous story has been adapted from the popular manga into three equally popular anime series, "Naruto," "Naruto Shippūden," and "Boruto." However, despite Kishimoto's rich world, intricate storylines, and groundbreaking fights, the series wouldn't be quite as popular without its knucklehead protagonist, Naruto Uzumaki, and there would be no Naruto without Maile Flanagan.
According to a 2014 interview with Western Herald, Flanagan started out in improv before moving into the world of acting. In the late '90s and early 2000s, she made small appearances in "MADtv," "Men in Black: The Series," and "Jackie Chan Adventures" before landing "Naruto" in 2002. Prior to becoming Naruto's English voice, Flanagan had never heard of the character or the manga. "I had no idea how big 'Naruto' was," she told a...

If you grew up watching "Naruto," or caught up with a few episodes in the original Japanese dub later in life, you will know that Naruto repeats "Dattebayo!" like a mantra. The word translates to "Believe it!" in English, and the anime's English dub features this phrase heavily since it was first introduced during the Chunin Exams arc. "Believe it!" has become a generational phrase for the Uzumakis, as it was initially uttered by Kushina, and then passed on from Naruto to his son, Boruto. While this remains a staple Naruto catchphrase, there's another signature staple phrase that inspires fans to this day.
In one of the episodes of "Naruto," the titular knuckleheaded ninja said the following: "I am a nobody, but I never gave up." This philosophy of never giving up shapes Naruto as a protagonist, as he abides by this mantra throughout his long, eventful arc. In fact,...

ABC is starting to whittle down its comedy projects.
The Disney-owned network is not moving forward with two high-profile comedy pilots – Lucy Liu’s workplace comedy, which was formerly known as Kids Matter Now, and Work Wife.
The workplace comedy, which has also had the title Bossy, starred Lucy Liu and came from Better with You creator Shana Goldberg-Meehan, CBS Television Studios and 20th Century Fox TV.
The multi-camera comedy was ordered to pilot in March 2020 but the Covid pandemic meant that it wasn’t able to shoot until much later down the line.
Written and executive produced by Goldberg-Meehan and directed by Christine Gernon (Speechless), the show centered on a diva boss with no patience for working parents who adopts a baby and has a change of heart, casting her mother-of-three assistant as an unlikely mentor and upending the office dynamics.
Former Angie Tribeca star Hayes MacArthur was set as a lead opposite Liu.

Naruto Uzumaki is back in “Naruto Shippuden.” The plucky young ninja from the hidden leaf village has returned from over two years of training with one of the legendary Sannin, Jiraiya. Naruto is stronger, wiser and older. Well, not really older. Naruto may visually be going through puberty, but his voice is one hundred percent the same as when he left. So, instead of hearing a mature teenage boy’s voice of about fifteen years, you will still hear the Maile Flanagan. Nothing personal against Ms. Flanagan, but the tone of her voice bears a sharp contrast to Junko Takeuchi, who does the Japanese voice over. The story begins with a flash-forward sequence of the older Naruto finally finding Sasuke. Then the story jumps back to Naruto’s return to the hidden leaf village after his training sojourn with Master Jiraiya. Although, the story begins with a darker tone, the...

In our annual Visibility Awards, we formally recognize the people who have positively or negatively impacted lesbian and bi visibility in American entertainment during the year. (See previous years here: 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004).
From Best Movie to Worst Song to Lesbian/Bi Woman of the Year, these awards recognize the television shows, movies, music, books and people who entertained, inspired, or disappointed us in 2008.
In previous years, the winners have been editorially chosen by the AfterEllen.com staff (note: winners do not necessarily represent any individual staff member's preference). This year, we opened up some of the categories for nominations, posted the finalists, and thousands of you voted. We've designated those categories with this symbol:

Now on to the best and worst of...

18,000 gay and lesbian couples were married in California during the six months it was legal, before the passage of Prop 8.
In the pages to follow, AfterEllen.com profiles some of the couples whose marriages are now in jeopardy because of this new law, and offers their perspectives on the battle ahead. (Wedding dates are noted in parentheses next to their names.)
Since this is an entertainment site, we're focusing on couples connected to the entertainment industry in one way or another, and therefore relevant to AfterEllen.com's commitment to furthering lesbian visibility in popular culture. But these are just a few of the stories to be told in...
