Longtime boxing commentator Larry Merchant was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles last night and is in the critical care unit, according to a report.
The 92-year-old broadcaster, best known for his long stint with HBO, was taken to a Los Angeles hospital around 6 p.m./Pt Thursday, according to TMZ, which sites sources with direct knowledge of the situation.
Merchant was a staple of HBO’s boxing coverage from 1978 until his retirement in 2012. Based on Brock Yates' book "Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, the Machine," Michael Mann's new biopic "Ferrari" follows the famous Italian car maker through a significant four-month portion of his life wherein his wife Laura (Penélope Cruz) learns about a secret mistress (Shailene Woodley) and son that he had been hiding for years. His company is also on the brink of bankruptcy and a Ferrari vehicle will have to win the 1957 Mille Miglia, a notable Italian car race, to put the company back on the map. In Mann's usual style, "Ferrari" is terse and distant, and the title character, played by Adam Driver, comes across as aloof and robotic; it's hard to imagine this man being passionate enough to maintain one marriage, let alone an entire secret secondary family.
Mann could have made "Ferrari" into a more traditional biopic that followed its subject from birth to...

Business is slow in Hollywood right now with the writers and actors on strike, but that hasn't slowed down Jonathan Bennett.
Bennett has two programs airing on Food Network over the next couple of months, which allows the charismatic host to do on screen what relatively few get the opportunity to do -- be himself.
He's having a great time, and viewers are reaping all the rewards.
The first production he's hosting is Battle of the Decades, a new series in which chefs of different decades partner up to create something edible (elevated!) with dishes and gadgets of the time.
It's a perfect match for Bennett, who has been firmly planted in popular culture since his breakout roll in Mean Girls in 2004, starring with Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, and a host of others who have been influencing the industry ever since.
Bennett referenced Taylor Swift, who, at a recent concert,...

Big George Foreman is a film directed by George Tillman Jr. starring Khris Davis.
Some movies simply wait for a great story to do all the work.
Foreman’s life was quite a story.
We can’t say the same for the film.
Movie Review
Some said the voiceover was anti-cinematic, and it was Scorsese (among others) who denied it film after film. This Big George Foreman wants to have a lot of Scorsese without achieving his pace, effectiveness and, above all, grace, and narrative freshness.
Big George Foreman is a film that resorts, at all times, to the obvious, to direct compassion, to that piece of American History a thousand times told in a thousand better ways and with more elaborate plots and less flat characters and, in the end, with more to say.
It is well executed technically, it knows how to behave, but the script’s compassionate...

Updated, after exclusive: Disney Marvel Studio’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 saw a momentum last night with previews rising to $17.5M, which is very good for the movie. There’s been some concern heading into the weekend about how hard threequelitis is poised to hit this movie, which is very odd, because it’s a feature with a lot of heart, that’s a lot of fun. Of that amount preview number, $400K was made from 100 Imax shows on Wednesday; meaning that the Thursday preview dough for GOTG3 inches out that of GOTG2 by $100K (that was $17M).

It looks like Saturday was a massive day at the theaters as the top two films, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Evil Dead Rise saw larger than expected numbers with The Super Mario Bros. Movie pulling out the win with an estimated $40 million, marking the best fourth weekend ever for an animated film and officially becoming the second highest grossing animated film ever at the domestic box office officially passing the $486.2 made by Finding Dory. There is a bit of an asterisk on the record as some All Time lists put the “live action” remake of The Lion King on the list of “All Time Highest Grossing Animated Films”. Technically, that was a fully CGI made film, which would put Super Mario Bros in third place as that version of The Lion King took in $543.6 million.

It’s another weekend of box office domination for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which collected a towering $40 million in its fourth frame. Those ticket sales, down just 33% from the weekend prior, were easily enough to rule over the weekend’s newcomers, including literary adaptation “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” Finnish war drama “Sisu” and biopic “Big George Foreman.”
After four weeks on the big screen, “Mario” has grossed $490 million in North America and $532 million internationally to loom even larger as the highest-grossing film of 2023. It’s also the first movie of the year to cross $1 billion globally. Only five pandemic-era blockbusters have hit that milestone.
“Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret” fared the best among the new releases, opening in third place with $6.8 million from 3,343 North American theaters. Those are rocky ticket sales for the $30 million-budgeted coming-of-age story, which is based on Judy Blume’s seminal novel,...

Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s Super Mario Bros at $40M continues to break records, with the best fourth weekend ever for an animated movie, beating Incredibles 2‘s $28.4M. It’s also the best fourth frame for a Universal title, easily beating Jurassic World‘s $29.2M. It’s even ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s fourth weekend, which did $32.1M. Are you there box office? It’s-a me, “Mario.”
Now in its fourth weekend of release, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is still dominating the competition on domestic charts, fending off theatrical newcomers “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” “Sisu” and “Big George Foreman.”
The adaptation of Judy Blume’s best-selling 1970 novel is faring the best among new releases. Opening in 3,343 locations, the coming-of-age film earned $2.25 million on Friday, a figure that includes roughly $600,000 in Thursday previews. That may be enough for the Lionsgate release to project a third place finish for the weekend, but it’s ultimately an underwhelming result for a crowdpleaser based on a literary mainstay that carries a $30 million production budget.
That’s not to say support isn’t there for “Margaret.” The film has earned glowing reviews, landing a 98% approval rating from top critics on aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences are also a big thumbs-up,...

Khris Davis stars as George Foreman in Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story Of The Once And Future Heavyweight Champion Of The World. To compete with heavyweight champions like Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali, boxers who were just as well known for their presence outside the ring as their fighting skills, George Foreman cultivated his own larger-than-life personality. It’s served him well for decades, from his boxing title pursuits of the 1970s to his entrepreneurial efforts of the ’90s and beyond. But that also posed a challenge for any actor who wanted to portray Foreman in the new biopic about his life, Big George Foreman. But Foreman, who serves as an executive producer on the film, says that Khris Davis’s performance is a knockout. Foreman was the oldest boxer ever to win a heavyweight championship, and now fans can see his story on the big screen for the first time in “Big George Foreman,” in theaters Friday, April 28.

Across a career that spanned four decades and saw him earn two heavyweight titles and a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, George Foreman cemented his legacy as one of the greatest boxers of all time. But despite having one of the most remarkable stories in sporting history to work with, Big George Foreman manages to stumble sluggishly from one chapter in his life to the next in a way that’s neither insightful nor entertaining.
George Tillman Jr.’s film plays out largely as a by-the-numbers biopic, charting Foreman’s rise from a troubled Texas youth to a title-winning boxer, then a born-again preacher, then a title-winning boxer again. Khris Davis, previously seen testing out his pugilistic skills on poor Donald Glover in Atlanta, plays Big George from the end of his teenage years to his remarkable comeback as the world’s oldest-ever heavyweight champion at the age of 45.

The full title of the George Foreman biopic provides a not-so-subtle clue as to the film’s prosaicness. The movie about Jake Lamotta vividly signaled the personality of its lead character with Raging Bull. The one about Rocky Graziano jauntily indicated its upbeat nature with Somebody Up There Likes Me. So what does Foreman merit? Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World. It sounds like the title of a biography for young readers, and that’s pretty much how the by-the-numbers film plays.

There’s George Foreman the boxer and George Foreman the grill. The Sony biopic out this Friday offers a different George. “I want to spread the word of God,” says Foreman (Khris Davis) in the trailer for “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World.”
It’s a production from faith-based Sony Pictures’ label Affirm Films. Its first film in 2008, “Fireproof” starring Kirk Cameron, grossed $33 million on a $500,000 budget. To date, the (mostly domestic) global theatrical gross for Affirm titles stands at $520 million — $400 million more than the films’ total production costs.
Directed by George Tillman Jr. and with Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker in a supporting role, “Foreman” may represent the biggest Affirm budget to date. (One source lists it at $34 million.) Prior Affirm budgets topped out at $20 million. It’s also got one of Affirm’s biggest releases, with 2,575 theaters.
Opening prospects are unclear.

Few genres in Hollywood history have enjoyed as much staying power as the boxing movie — and it’s not hard to understand why. In addition to satisfying our primal urge to watch large men beat the tar out of each other, they come with a built-in dramatic structure that’s almost impossible to screw up. You set up a feud between two fighters, put the good guy through unimaginable amounts of adversity as he trains, then let it all culminate in a big match that serves as a metaphor for the protagonist’s internal conflict. No matter how admirable you found Barton Fink’s principled refusal to write wrestling movies, Jack Lipnick was on to something when he told him “there’s plenty of poetry right inside that ring.”
So it’s almost impressive that “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World” is so dull.

Biopics about star athletes or artists tend to have the same broad shape: the rise to achievement and fame, the fall from triumph (often fueled by some combination of addiction and ego), the restoration to a harder-won glory. A great biopic, like “Get on Up” or “I, Tonya,” will tease a profound portrait of the subject out of that form; a middling one will oversimplify the subject just to hit the right beats. But then there’s a film like “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World.” That’s not a movie title — it’s the title of a parable. And it’s well chosen, since “Big George Foreman” is about a life that feels so outlandishly ready-made for the ups and downs, the lessons and inspirations, of the superstar biopic genre that you don’t even have to mess with it.

Flattering biopic zooms entertainingly through an extraordinary, switchback career
The extraordinary and long-gestating comeback story of heavyweight boxing champ George Foreman has taken a long time to tell, perhaps because he has lived his life in Muhammad Ali’s shade, especially since Ali’s sensational underdog victory over him in the 1974 Rumble in the Jungle. In movie terms, Leon Gast’s thrilling 1996 documentary When We Were Kings turned Foreman into the bad guy who deserved to lose – particularly the nasty macho detail about Foreman having a German shepherd on a lead when he turned up in Zaire for the fight.

So often thought of primarily as the big lug who was so dramatically dispatched by Muhammad Ali in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” in Zaire in 1974, George Foreman is the main event in Big George Foreman. While there is plenty of boxing here to satisfy sports fans, the film is mild-mannered and genial to a fault as it charts the life of a dirt-poor Texas kid with a devastating punch whose public image transformed over the years from hulking bogeyman to that of a good-natured businessman and man of God.
Ali was such a commanding, entertaining and (mostly) adored worldwide figure, from his emergence as the self-anointed “greatest” to his ultimate status as one of the most beloved and admired men on the planet, that it isn’t easy to watch him take a back seat here to a younger but less charismatic figure onscreen. Khris Davis stars as George Foreman in Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story Of The Once And Future Heavyweight Champion Of The World. Big George Foreman is a big step forward for Khris Davis. It’s his first film as an above-the-line star, following supporting roles in films like Judas and the Black Messiah and Space Jam: A New Legacy. Davis, however, sees this starring role less as a win for himself and more of a win for the subject of the biopic, boxer George Foreman. Khris Davis stars as George Foreman in Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story Of The Once And Future Heavyweight Champion Of The World. Twenty-two years after Ali was released, one of Muhammad Ali’s main rivals, George Foreman, gets his very own biopic, Big George Foreman. The film, which traces the boxer’s life from childhood to becoming the oldest heavyweight champion of the world, counts its subject as one of its executive producers. And Foreman, who’s portrayed in the film by Khris Davis, says he still finds it hard to believe what he was able to accomplish, especially after he’d originally hung up his gloves. Successful awards season showings for spring and summer releases like “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” and “Elvis” have evidently discouraged studios from backloading their buzziest titles. Fresh off a successful premiere at South by Southwest, “Air” is getting a wide release from Amazon Studios this month, even though it’s the kind of movie one can see having an easy route to the Oscars out of TIFF or Venice.
See ‘Air’ soars with critics: Ben Affleck’s film starring Matt Damon and Viola Davis ‘defies gravity and expectations’
“Beau is Afraid” may not be typical academy fodder (though that’s becoming harder and harder to define these days), but it’s a highly anticipated title that A24 could’ve held for a July or August debut. Is the studio betting that Ari Aster’s latest is, like the jewel in its Oscar-gilded crown, also a movie voters will embrace given enough time?...

There is perhaps no greater sports underdog story in the history of cinema than "Rocky." Sports dramas had existed long before the 1976 classic, but Sylvester Stallone's beloved boxing flick has become the de facto blueprint for the genre ever since it was released. The film smartly and realistically portrays Rocky Balboa not as a reigning champion, but a down-on-his-luck amateur looking for his big break. It's fitting, then, that the character's primary inspiration, Chuck Wepner, was mostly known for his ability to take beatings instead of giving them.
Rocky Balboa has become so famous that it seems as if he was a real person, his statue proudly standing in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and drawing more visitors than the Liberty Bell. The boxer may have climbed the ranks in the sequels, but the original film's charm was the Italian Stallion's loss in the ring contributing to a victory in the soul.

When "Rocky" hit theaters in 1976, a good portion of the public was enthralled by the sport of boxing. Though some were repulsed by the violent spectacle of two human beings pounding the tar out of each other with eight-ounce gloves, heavyweight title fights drew huge television ratings worldwide, thanks in large part to the prominence of master self-promoter Muhammad Ali. His return to the sport, after being suspended for refusing to serve in the Vietnam War on religious grounds, resulted in a trilogy of unforgettable bouts with Joe Frazier and a rope-a-dope masterpiece against George Foreman. These fights were inspirational displays of intestinal fortitude fueled by searing emotional stakes. To lose the world heavyweight title on a global stage was to suffer a grievous blow to one's pride. Throwing in the towel was unthinkable. The only way Ali, Frazier or Foreman could allow themselves to lose was by knockout or decision.

Ben Affleck may have looked aloof sitting next to Jennifer Lopez at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, but according to a seat filler who sat next to the couple, the actor couldn’t have been more lovey-dovey with J.Lo.

John G. Avildsen's "Rocky" was a suitably scrappy production. Much like its palooka protagonist, it came out of the corner as an underdog. It was modestly budgeted enough to potentially turn a profit (thanks in part to the non-union New York City crew the director snuck into Philadelphia), but no one viewed the boxing flick, written by a nobody named Sylvester Stallone, as anything more than a programmer. Best case, it would ride the wave of excitement generated by the decade's heavyweight titans, and establish its screenwriter as a B-level star.
No one saw "Rocky" becoming the highest-grossing movie of 1976 while winning that year's Academy Award for Best Picture.
Movies are far more calculated ventures nowadays. Most prestige films are every bit as formulaic as your garden-variety superhero flick. There's a tried-and-true template for every genre, which means innovation, especially on a technical level, is best left to proven A-list directors.

Boxing movies tend to be pretty great fodder for a harrowing feel-good story. Even people who don't give a damn about boxing otherwise would be hard-pressed not to cheer by the end of "Rocky" or "Cinderella Man." Sure, there is the occasional dark boxing tale, such as "Raging Bull," that makes for equally -- if not more -- compelling cinema. Today though brings us what appears to be an underdog story, and a familiar one for many fans of the sport, as the trailer for "Big George Foreman" is here. Or, to be more specific regarding the title, "Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World." And yes, they did put all of that on the poster.
In any case, this is the tale of George Foreman and, more specifically, his wildly unlikely comeback story as a boxer advanced in his years.

"Rocky" has endured as one of the most uplifting sports films of all time thanks in large part to its heartfelt portrayal of two social misfits falling haltingly in love as one of them trains for an unlikely, yet plausible shot at the heavyweight boxing title. Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire give lovely, lived-in performances that are painful to watch at times because Rocky has no idea how awkwardly his gregariousness lands, while Adrian seems terrified that anyone would find her worthy of affection.
For most of its runtime, "Rocky" is a human drama about losers. It soars to life during its Bill Conti-scored training montage that explodes the film into its exhilarating third act. Interestingly, the final match isn't all that long. From the opening bell to the end of the fifteenth round, it occupies a scant eight-and-a-half minutes of screen time. But it feels like trench warfare...

As Warner Bros attempts to shake up their whole content creation with DC films, only some schedule shifts are happening with Sony Pictures, according to Deadline. One of their biggest moves is pushing the Adam Driver sci-fi actioner, 65, back to the same weekend as Shazam: Fury of the Gods. The studio has faith that the movie will be able to compete with the DC superhero and gets pushed back so the latest Scream film can perform as best as can.
The plot synopsis for 65 reads, “After a catastrophic crash on an unknown planet, pilot Mills (Driver) quickly discovers he’s actually stranded on Earth…65 million years ago. Now, with only one chance at rescue, Mills and the only other survivor, Koa (Ariana Greenblatt), must make their way across an unknown terrain riddled with dangerous prehistoric creatures in an epic fight to survive. Sam Raimi produces. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods wrote A Quiet Place.

Expect many of your favorites to make special holiday appearances, so you can pluck along with the winner (Amber Riley as Harp), bleat with the runners-up (Wilson Phillips as Lambs) or shiver with the semi-finalist (Nikki Glaser as Snowstorm). As always, the lyrics will appear on screen with a bouncing ball keeping the tempo.
